We hope you had a chance to participate in the USM Professional Development Week 2025.

I was able to attend the Tuesday, 11:15 a.m. "Productivity: Strategies to Thrive in the Modern Workplace" session.  The presenter gave advice managing how we work and at the end shared some tools to help with daily work.  There was discussion around different types of work that we can identify:  Admin, Deep Work, Meetings, Other.  We need time for deep work and time for collaborative work; block time for deep and focused work.  I also learned about the 3 Ds: Delay, Deny or Delegate.  Another tidbit the presenter suggested that every 2 - 3 months you should document how you are spending your time.  This can help us figure out how we are spending our time.

  • The BIG Homecoming Saturday is October 11, and there are roles/activities happening from 7:30 a.m. - 8 p.m.

  • There are other events happening leading up to October 11 that you can support if that Saturday doesn't work for you.

    • Wednesday, 10/8 - Staff/Faculty Social (4 - 6 p.m.)

    • Thursday, 10/9 - Grit X Talks and Reception (4 - 6 p.m. Talks, 6 - 8 p.m. Reception)

    • Friday, 10/10 - Global Crafts and Snacks (4 - 7 p.m.), Retriever Spotlight in the Skylight (6:30 - 8:30 p.m.)

Take a study break and get creative with a set of hands-on photography workshops in the Library Gallery! 
  • Explore historic photographic equipment like stereoviewers and stereographs, zoetropes, and other viewers from the 20th century
  • Learn about the photography and recording equipment available for student use from the Digital Media Lab
  • Sit for a vintage-style instant film portrait made with an early 20th century studio camera
  • Make your own cyanotype print with artist and instructor Hannah Brancato! 
  • Pick up limited edition cyanotype and vintage camera buttons,  and custom 3d printed bookmarks from the Library Innovation Lab!
All this and more in the back of the Library Gallery, part of the annual Relax and Refuel Study Con.

Steve and Jess read Tim Gunn: The Natty Professor, and while it's not strictly about mentoring (and there's a lot of non-linear storytelling, gossip, and a few transphobic comments...) there are some really nice tidbits we can draw from. If you feel compelled to read the book, it's a very easy read, and if you're a Tim Gunn fan, he does read the audio version.

The Mentoring Committee has designed an engaging workshop pulling from some of his mentoring themes. You don't need to read the book to participate!
