PSS would like to draw attention to the availability of leave time in observance of Juneteenth. The following is an excerpt regarding this from the campus communication sent on June 17th.
"In partnership with institutions across the University System of Maryland, UMBC encourages faculty, staff, and students to take this opportunity to put our values into action by participating in Juneteenth events and/or increasing their personal knowledge through study and reflection. On Friday, June 19, beginning at 12 p.m, UMBC is offering administrative leave for the remainder of the day to accommodate this work. Please talk with your supervisor to coordinate coverage. Summer classes scheduled to be held after 12 p.m. will also be canceled in observance."

After a Challenging Week: Campus Resources Supporting Staff
Dear UMBC Community Members,
Black Americans have been subjected to over 400 years of structural violence and racism. We, the Executive Committee of the Professional Staff Senate, believe everyone is entitled to fair and human treatment from law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Sadly, this has not been the case for the Black community. At UMBC, we will continue to work to make resources available to work through recent events, foster greater understanding, and address these issues to change our society for the better.
As we reflect on this challenging week following the national uprising in response to the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black Americans, we know you, your colleagues, and friends are experiencing these events in incredibly different ways. To support you in this moment, we wanted to amplify the important work of our colleagues across the campus community who provide support for staff, faculty, and students by sharing some campus resources and offices that are available in these challenging times. We recognize that this is not a comprehensive list and apologize to any who we've missed.

In our parallel, non-COVID universe, last Thursday was Take Back the Night, when many of us would have been involved with naming sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking and reclaiming safe space on our campus. Although we were not able to gather to support our fellow students and other UMBC community members, there is a way you can actively participate in Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Please go to our Green Dot myUMBC page and tell us about a Green Dot you have done or will do. Apply for the PSS mentoring Program 2020-2021 Cohort
The Professional Staff Senate (PSS) Mentoring Program is now recruiting both mentors and mentees to participate in the 2020-2021 cohort. The
application is now live with an extended deadline of
Wednesday, April 29.
Who Should Apply:
- If you are a new staff member on campus (less than 3 years experience), consider applying to be a mentee to be paired with a seasoned mentor for a one-year time period.
- If you are a staff member who has worked at UMBC for 3 or more years, consider applying to be a mentor to be paired with a new staff member for a one-year time period to share your expertise and campus knowledge.
Please Note:
Commitment to the PSS Mentoring Program will formally be for one year from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. Additional information will be sent to all applicants after the application deadline in late April. If you have questions about the program, contact PSS Mentoring Committee Chair, Laila Shishineh (

Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising
The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising is looking for new members to join our team of orientation advisors. This is a valuable opportunity for the UMBC faculty, staff, and graduate student community. New team members will have an opportunity to improve their advising competencies, work with a diverse body of students, and enhance their leadership and interpersonal skills.
Comprehensive training will be provided for all new orientation advisors on June 2nd and June 3rd from 8:00am - 5:00pm.
The application deadline will be May 1, 2020. The application is attached and can be submitted HERE.
We will also be hosting a number of informational sessions for those who may be interested on the following dates:
- Wednesday, March 11, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)
- Thursday, March 26, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)
- Monday, April 6, 12-1 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)
- Thursday, April 16, 4:30-5:30 PM at Sherman Hall 220 (B-Wing, 2nd Floor)

Professional Development Day on April 16th, 2020
How is community and culture created? Who gets to say? We are all part of the community and culture that is UMBC. Our shared culture gets created first at the individual level. This year's half-day conference style Professional Development Day on April 16th, 2020 focuses on building our culture from the inside out.
Through our theme of Me, You, Us: Empowering Ourselves, Building Relationships, Co-Creating Our Community participants will enjoy a morning keynote on work-life balance and have the opportunity to choose 2 break-out sessions.
Breakout session topics include: managing strengths, unleashing your superpower, fierce conversations, civility, customer service, and ways to create a culture of appreciation.
Join us for a day of learning, development, and self-care with sessions After just half a day you will leave with a variety of tools and approaches to make a positive impact in your professional and personal life.
