Return to Campus - Spring 2022

A Message from HR:

Testing

We are aware that there has been some confusion about who should test in January. All employees are required to test in January or when you first return to campus – even if you worked throughout the winter break. PCR tests are readily available at the Center for Well-Being, UC and Campus Police Department. Please share this information broadly with other individuals in your departments; we recognize that the previous shortage of tests at sites created some confusion and frustration, the sites were restocked within an hour. More information on testing, sites, and protocols can be found here.

Boosting

UMBC requires everyone in the community to receive a booster shot or have an approved exemption. Our goal is always to increase the safety of our campus and hope that increasing numbers of boostered community members will help us make a positive impact. There have been a few issues with CRISP uploading booster information - currently it is approximately 90% accurate.
Commencement Volunteers Needed

A message from the Office of Institutional Advancement:

We are in need for a few more volunteers for the ceremonies next week. For those that would like to volunteer to assist with the winter's ceremonies, you can sign up using this form. Please know that while we do appreciate each and every volunteer, we know that some of you will not feel comfortable volunteering this year, and we understand that. Please don't feel pressure to volunteer.

A few things to know about the ceremonies this winter;

1) In order to maximize the number of graduates and guests that we can accommodate in the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena (CEIA), we had to split the undergraduate ceremony into two ceremonies, as we do in the spring. So there will be a total of 3 ceremonies this winter.

2) There will not be a student line-up in the halls of the CEIA, or a procession of graduates. Graduates will enter the CEIA and go directly to their seats. Right now we are working with the CEIA to maximize safe seating for our graduates, but we will be using the floor along with 2 sections of the lower bowl for graduates.

3) Graduates will still walk across the stage and we will share those details with those who sign up for the student line-up role.

4) Due to the lack of floor space, and the need to physically distance and reduce interactions, the Alumni Association will not be handing out their gift to the graduates after they cross the stage.

5) In order to limit the number of physical interactions, we are going to have graduates scan their own floor passes using a stationary scanner. We will still need to have stage assistants on the stage to assist those that have difficulty scanning their cards.

6) The only faculty and staff participating will be those that have a role in hooding PhD graduates in the Grad School ceremony on Tuesday, December 21. This means that we do not have a procession of Faculty and Staff, and therefore, no Faculty/Staff line-up role for volunteers.

7) There will be a Platform Party at each ceremony, the procession of the PP will likely look different. As we are working with the CEIA to maximize safe seating for our graduates, we realize that there may not be room for a center aisle, so more details still need to be worked out on this.

Here is the link to sign up to volunteer, we thank you in advance!

Don't forget to RSVP for the RetriEVER Grateful End of Semester Celebration this Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for snacks, networking, and a free gift in the Skylight Lounge.

Share a photo or message of gratitude through our virtual photo booth - https://bit.ly/3G9CybY

Representatives Needed for Student Conduct Hearing Boards

From The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards:

As you may know, we conduct full and formal judicial review hearings for students who request them. A student might request a board hearing if they are charged with something serious, for which the termination of their housing contract or disciplinary suspension/dismissal is a likely outcome. They might also request a hearing if they are refuting the charges and believe they are not responsible for the alleged misconduct. Our Code of Student Conduct specifies that judicial boards are composed of between 2-4 students and one faculty or staff member. If you have been in a hearing before, you know that our board members are well-trained, thoughtful, and rigorous in their questioning. Although we have many "friends of Student Conduct" that have volunteered to help out in the faculty/staff capacity, I want to avoid repeatedly shoulder-tapping these same folks, if possible.

So I'd like to open up this opportunity for others to assist us in this crucial aspect of our operation. This is a chance for you to foster the accountability-taking and ethical decision-making capacity of our students and also to get a "good student affairs experience." ALL OF THESE HEARINGS ARE VIRTUAL AND YOU CAN PARTICIPATE FROM YOUR OFFICE OR REMOTE WORK LOCATION.

Here are the hearing dates and times that remain unfilled for the Fall Semester of 2021 (please consider signing up for the early dates, which are typically the hardest for me to fill):
December 10, 1:00-6:00 PM
December 14 (Tuesday, Study Day) 9:00 AM-1:00 PM

With all that said, please consult your calendar and email me with the date(s) you are available and willing to help out. I will reply and ask you to put a tentative hold on your calendar and then confirm the specific time and nature of the hearing when we get closer to the actual date. Thanks again for your support of this important task!

November 19, 1:45-6:00 PMish

November 23, 9:00-11:00 AM (Appellate Board, RL Eligible)

December 3, 1:00-6:00 PMish

Here are a few caveats: 1) Before you volunteer, make sure you are in conversation with your supervisor, and 2) Our hearings occasionally run past 5:00 PM, so if you are on a tight timeline because of family or social commitments, just be aware that once you commit it is really important to have you be available "for the duration" whatever that ends up looking like.

Regards,

Jeff Cullen, Ph.D., Director
Student Conduct and Community Standards
1000 Hilltop Circle
Baltimore, MD 21250
(o) 410-455-2453
jcullen@umbc.edu
http://conduct.umbc.edu
