Take a break and honor International Day of Persons with Disabilities and join ADS and I3B for the screening of I Didn't See You There on Monday December 5 at 4:00p in Admin 101 - the movie is both thought-provoking and challenges perceptions about disability. Discussion and Q&A will follow the screening of the film.

As a visibly disabled person, filmmaker Reid Davenport sets out to make a film about how he sees the world, from either his wheelchair or his two feet, without having to be seen himself. The unexpected arrival of a circus tent outside his apartment in Oakland, CA leads him to consider the history and legacy of P.T. Barnum's Freak Show and its lingering presence in his daily life. This perspective results in a documentary that is powerful and emotional, thoughtful and raw, intimate and political - and has been awarded and acclaimed at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Admin 101 is accessible, with nearby accessible restrooms.  The film is captioned, and ASL will be available for the discussion. An audio-described version of the film is also available upon request. Winter Session 2023 courses are mostly online, with some hybrid and in-person classes on campus. The Winter session starts on January 3, 2023, and runs through January 27, 2023. Tuition remission is available for eligible UMBC faculty and staff, as well as their spouses and dependents.

The Women's Center is having a Spectrum Clothing Swap this Thursday, November 17th! They are looking for all types and sizes of clothes, jewelry, and unused accessories (hair clips, tights, socks, etc). Donations will be accepted at the Women's Center during normal operating hours through November 17th at 12pm. Please wash clothing before donating, and only bring clothes in good condition.

One of the saddest statistics you will hear today is approximately one out of every three college students in America suffers from food insecurity. This is a startling statistic and one that needs to be corrected. 

UMBC's Retriever Essentials and Parking Services are teaming up for Food for Fines. This program was created to collect food and toiletries for UMBC students facing food insecurity. 

How does it work? From November 7-18, simply bring in five or more items from the attached list and we will reduce one active citation to a warning (the citation must be $40 or less). Previously paid citations are not eligible. All donations must be made at the Parking Services offices from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday thru Friday by November 18. 

Don't have any citations? We are happy to accept any and all donations. We just ask that your items be unopened and non-expired. 

College is hard enough to manage without dealing with hunger. Your help can mean so much to so many students.

For Disability Awareness Month - take a look at UMBC's Style Guide for tips on how to write effectively about people with disabilities with the section on Inclusive and Affirming Language. With 20-33% of the population either having a disability or having a qualifying health condition  (which includes mental health) during their lifetime, it's a tangible benefit to know the basics.
