May
1st has been historically linked to international workers’ rights.
More recently, May Day has served as a national day of action to raise
awareness about immigration rights and the need to keep families together as
they fight for a better life.
On
this May Day, let’s come together as a community to recognize the contributions
immigrants make every day to UMBC and our nation.
Students, Staff, Faculty,
Service Workers, Administrators: Join us on May
1st, 2017 for a day-long celebration in the plaza in front of the UC.
Come when you can!
Regardless
of where we were born, how we look or the language we speak, let’s pledge
support to a strong, inclusive, safe UMBC for all.
We will create and
share the many ways immigrants contribute to UMBC (and the U.S.).
Action Items:
- Wear red to identify as part of (or in solidarity with)
our community of immigrants.
- Bring quotes,
art, photos, texts—by immigrants or celebrating immigration—to display on
our celebration wall.
- Sign up for a 15-minute time slot to
read—a poem, short story or excerpt by your favorite immigrant author; sing;
play an instrument; perform—spoken
word, monologue, play; or to share your
own immigration stories. Additional

Professional Development Opportunity
Become a New Student Orientation Advisor
UMBC staff are needed to work as New Student Orientation Advisors during Summer 2017 with the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising (OAPA). Comprehensive advising and PeopleSoft training will be provided for all Orientation Advisors.
This is a unique professional development opportunity for staff members
who can spare a few days away from the office in the summer and have an
interest in adding some professional advising to their portfolios.

OAPA is also seeking graduate students for paid summer opportunities to
work with Orientation. If you are a staff member that works with any
graduate students, please share the above link with them if you believe
they might be interested in doing some
advising in the summer. **

PSS Mentoring Program
2017–2018 Cohort
The PSS Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for seasoned and new staff to connect and share knowledge, resources, expertise, and experiences. Mentors will be a friendly connection for mentees, offering coaching, insight, and encouragement. Mentees will have the chance to learn about the campus culture and opportunities that UMBC has to offer. The program aims to increase staff connections, create avenues for new relationships, and build a stronger, cohesive staff community at UMBC.
Mentors and mentees will be paired to work together for one year, starting on July 1, 2017. Training, luncheons, and workshops will be offered for all participants during the one year commitment.
Senate experience is not required to apply to serve as a mentor or mentee.
Apply for the PSS Mentoring Program by May 1! Please share this information with any colleagues on campus who you think would enjoy participating.

Nominations and elections for the Professional Staff Senate and Council of University System Staff (CUSS) are now being solicited. Nominate a colleague or self-nominate by 4/15!
Nominees must be exempt staff employees and have been employed at UMBC for at least one year (hired on or before 4/15/16).

Nominations and elections for the Professional Staff Senate and Council of University System Staff (CUSS) are now being solicited. Nominate a colleague or self-nominate by 4/15!
Nominees must be exempt staff employees and have been employed at UMBC for at least one year (hired on or before 4/15/16).

What is the Professional Staff Senate (PSS)? We represent you! We are the official representative body of professional, or exempt, staff employed at UMBC.
What do we do? We provide a forum for discussing issues involving or of interest to exempt staff members, such as academic and administrative policies. Some of these topics have included FLSA, campus climate, employee benefits, and state budget updates and impacts. We work diligently to maintain and contribute to community life at UMBC by organizing events for staff and volunteering for non-PSS sponsored events. Each member serves on selected subcommittees of their choosing regarding certain policies or procedures.

Student Government Association Elections
Encourage a student to run for a 2017-2018 SGA position!
Last week the SGA Election Board released the application to run as a candidate in next month's 2017 SGA Election (due at noon on Monday, March 27th).
While
there are typically students who have already planned to run for an SGA
position by the time the campaign begins, there are also many students
who have never thought of themselves as "the SGA type," and, based on
this, will not seriously consider running.
To
counter this phenomenon, you can identify a student or
two who you think would succeed in working with SGA, but who might not
immediately recognize it themselves, and then give them a gentle nudge,
asking them if they've ever thought about running.
Over
the past five years or so, a surprising number of students
thrive in their work with SGA mainly because they had a professor,
supervisor, advisor, mentor, or friend gently suggest that they think
about running for a position.
