Please register now for this year’s Fall Opening Meeting, on Thursday, August 22 in the Retriever Activities Center. This is a wonderful chance for faculty and staff to reunite, learn about upcoming campus initiatives, and hear from new students about their journeys to UMBC. Please RSVP today.

We also hope to see you at the 2024 Convocation ceremony, which will be held Tuesday, August 27 at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena at 3:30 p.m. We look forward to welcoming our incoming students and introducing them to UMBC’s traditions. We hope you will march in the procession, where some of our new students will see academic regalia for the first time. Although the deadline for ordering regalia has passed, you may wear your own. 

Those registered for Convocation may also join us for a Welcome Reception for Provost Manfred H. M. van Dulmen, hosted by President Sheares Ashby at 2:30 p.m. in the arena just before the ceremony. Those planning to march in the procession should arrive no later than 3 p.m. The ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Faculty/Staff Meal Plans provide the designated number of meals (70 or 100) to be used at your convenience.   • Community Circles: Participants will actively engage in a community circle and delve into social-emotional community building approaches.
  • Restorative facilitation techniques: Experience a session integrating restorative techniques into your facilitation skills and practices. Expand your own practice and share with others.
  • Standards-Setting Role Play: Observe and participate in role plays to create community standards. These have been used in many contexts including organization vision, mission and goal-setting, classroom management, and conflict resolution.
  • Connecting with your community members: Learn a few lessons you can implement in your classroom or organization to create a positive environment where all members are included and accountable.

We have officially changed our name from the Professional Staff Senate to the Exempt Staff Senate! 

Professional is the classification for EEO-6 codes, but it does not accurately represent the exempt staff whom we represent, as the other senate names do. We consider all staff on campus to be 'professional', not just those classified with Exempt status. We still represent the same exempt staff members we always have.

Changing our senate name has been in the works for some time. We revisited this as a priority in the fall of 2023 and successfully voted as a senate to change our name. Our proposal was sent to the University Steering Committee for approval and approved earlier this year. This change was just codified into the UMBC Plan of Organization by the President and UMBC’s legal counsel and made official as of June 14, 2024.

Spread the word, and expect to see us changing names and logos over the next month. Thank you to the senators who have worked on this process for many years!

Do you plan events on campus? Would you like to know more about the event process or find out how to get more support for your events?

Join Event & Conference Services for a showcase of our services and capabilities in the UC Ballroom on August 6th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.! This informational open house will show you the capabilities of our largest and most highly utilized event spaces on campus. 

We are rolling out the black and gold carpet and showing off what ECS has to offer. Staff will be on hand to answer all of your burning questions. We will also be hosting an introductory event training concurrently with our open house, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Lunch and refreshments will be served. This event is open to all UMBC staff and faculty who would like to learn more about the event planning process at UMBC.

UMBC's LEAP Academy is a 5-month leadership development experience designed to provide the critical professional competencies and people skills that new people managers need to be effective at leading others and teams. This program is also appropriate for existing supervisors who need a tune-up on today's critical foundational managerial competencies to better support their team. 

This cohort-style program (3 separate 20-person cohorts) will be delivered in a hybrid format with live in-person instructional sessions and virtual team coaching sessions. Participants will also receive an All-Access Pass to FranklinCovey's Impact Portal where they will have access to additional resources. 

The program runs from August to December and features instructional sessions, virtual team coaching sessions, and an All-Access Pass to FranklinCovey's Impact Portal, where participants can access course content and additional supervisory resources. Click here for a full program overview.
