Last week, I was thrilled to share that UMBC is kicking off a strategic planning process this semester. This is an exciting opportunity for us to envision UMBC’s future together and determine how we can be a catalyst for progress in higher education. Your input is essential to this work; we will include the broad UMBC community in a variety of ways throughout this
year-long process.
Foundational to envisioning the future of any organization is understanding our shared values—the fundamental beliefs or principles that guide our core work, actions, and goals. To that end, we would like to invite all students, faculty, and staff to take
this short, anonymous survey so that we may assess the values important to our community. Please complete the survey by November 17.

The Department of Human Resources and Strategic Talent Management would like to provide resources and support for Faculty and Staff related to election stress.
To quote our President and Provost, “It may seem obvious, but it is important for us to remember that we do not all hold the same political views. That is a very good thing. We treasure the diversity of this community, which enriches us all and shapes the educational experience that UMBC provides. We especially want to highlight the Employee Assistance Program through ComPsych and Guidance Resources, which has a myriad of resources:
- Take advantage of up to 5 free sessions with a licensed counselor.
- Access live and on-demand webinars on various topics such as resiliency, emotional well-being, grief & loss, stress and anger management, plus many others.
- ComPsych Huddles: these are interactive online groups intended to help you learn, grow and explore topics meaningful to your own well-being goals and self-care journey. When you join a Huddle, you will have the opportunity to learn key information on the topic, engage in discussion with your peers, and participate in live practices - all led by a ComPsych care professional. Huddles are offered on a variety of well-being topics aimed to improve self-care, resiliency, and well-being.
Attached is a flyer with instructions for how to login and use the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Friday Vaccine Clinics
Keep you and your loved ones safe this flu season!
In case you missed them, new vaccine clinics are coming to campus!
Due to popular demand, Friday vaccine clinics will take place at Retriever Integrated Health in the Center for Well-Being on November 8, 15, and 22.
This is a convenient on-campus opportunity to get this season’s flu shot and the latest COVID-19 vaccine, as well as other recommended vaccines (such as meningitis, RSV, shingles, tetanus, and more) that you may be eligible for.
Talk with your personal medical provider to see what is recommended for you. Remember that a flu or COVID infection can significantly interrupt your studies, your work, and other important events in your life. Reduce this risk by getting vaccinated!
This event is open to students, faculty, staff and their families ages 12+.

On Wednesday October 16th at noon Facilities Management and the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services are presenting on recent, current and potential construction projects that enhance physical accessibility, improve the physical environment of UMBC, and benefit the entire community while supporting people with disabilities. Get the latest info and expand our circle of allies-bring a friend or colleague, and share this information broadly.
Facilities Management and the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services are hosting a review of recent, current and potential construction projects that enhance accessibility, improve the physical environment of UMBC, and benefit the entire community while supporting accessibility for people with disabilities.
Learn about elevator replacement progress, accessible design within renovation, and more! Current/planned projects will be discussed and campus members (especially those with disabilities) are encouraged to share ideas, some may inform the proposal process for UMBC's participation with the AccessMD Program. The presentation goes beyond that program - and ideas from the lived experience of people with disabilities are especially important to this event.
We understand that synchronous attendance can be a challenge for anyone with a disability and have flexible options for participation.

UMBC's annual staff awards are an important way of recognizing the work being done every day by our dedicated exempt and nonexempt staff. Please take a moment to review the information regarding the awards and nominate someone who has been doing an exceptional job in that category. The deadline for nominations is October 31, 2024.
- University System of Maryland Board of Regents' Staff Awards: recognizing demonstrated excellence in one of five specific areas of work
- UMBC Presidential Distinguished Staff Awards: recognizing exceptional performance, leadership, and/or service
- Jakubik Family Endowment Staff Award for Exempt or Nonexempt Staff: recognizing contributions toward the success of UMBC students
- Karen L. Wensch Endowment Award for Outstanding Nonexempt Staff: recognizing excellence across a variety of areas of service
- Teresa Lupinek Endowment Award for Exempt or Nonexempt Staff: recognizing staff whose work embodies many of the outstanding qualities for which Teresa and her work were known
