Help Students Suit Up for Success by Donating!
As part of Career Month, the Career Center is collecting new and gently used professional clothing for "UMBC Suits You."
We’re inviting staff, faculty, alumni, and affiliates to donate professional attire at collection bins around campus from February 17th - February 28th.
Drop-off Locations & Hours (Starting February 17th):
- The Shriver Center (Public Policy Building, 1st Floor): 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. (Mon-Fri)
- Career Center (Math/Psych 201): 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. (Mon-Fri)
- Campus Information Center (The Commons, Lobby)
- Admin Building (1st Floor, near elevators)
- Performing Arts & Humanities Building (1st Floor, across from ticket booth)
- OCA Mocha (5410 East Dr, Arbutus, MD)
We’re Accepting:
- Pantsuits, skirt suits, dress pants, dresses, skirts, blazers, shell tops, button-up shirts, blouses, ties, and dress belts.
We’re NOT Accepting:
- Jewelry, handbags, shoes, and general accessories.
Please ensure all items are in good condition and appropriate for professional interactions. All donated clothing will be professionally cleaned before being offered to students.

Dinner with Friends: Stories are Everything
Join the Center for Democracy and Civic Life on Feb 19
On Wednesday, February 19, UMBC’s Center for Democracy and Civic Life will host Dinner with Friends: Stories are Everything, an engaging, facilitated conversation that will connect you with other members of the UMBC community. The Exempt Staff Senate is co-sponsoring this event. The program will take place on February 19, 2025 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the University Center, room 312. The Center for Democracy and Civic Life will provide a catered dinner.
Attendees will be seated together in small groups and have the opportunity to participate in conversation and art centered around the power of stories and storytelling. Attendees will tell each other stories from their own lives and talk about how storytelling can be used in our communities at UMBC and beyond.

Spring semester is quickly approaching and our donation window for Save-a-Swipe has opened! Save-a-Swipe is a program that supports UMBC students who are facing financial hardship and experiencing food insecurity.
If you have excess meal swipes in your meal plan, please consider donating to the Save-a-Swipe pool so your extra meals can be distributed to students in need. Each donated swipe will directly contribute to providing one "meal" to students in need.

Representatives Needed for Virtual Student Conduct Hearings and Appeals
Please see the below message from Student Conduct and Community Standards:
As you may know, we conduct full and formal judicial review hearings for students who request them. A student might request a board hearing if they are charged with something serious, for which the termination of their housing contract or disciplinary suspension/dismissal is a likely outcome. They might also request a hearing if they are refuting the charges and believe they are not responsible for the alleged misconduct.
Our Code of Student Conduct specifies that judicial boards are composed of between 2-4 students and one faculty or staff member. If you have been in a hearing before, you know that our board members are well-trained, thoughtful, and rigorous in their questioning. Although we have many "friends of Student Conduct" that have volunteered to help out in the faculty/staff capacity, this is an opportunity for staff members to assist us in this crucial aspect of our operation.
This is a chance for you to foster the accountability-taking and ethical decision-making capacity of our students and also to get a "good student affairs experience." Unfortunately, most of the staff in Residential Life have baked-in conflicts that prevent them from serving in this capacity. Here are the hearing dates and times (ALL VIRTUAL, AT THIS TIME) that I have lined up thus far for the Spring Semester of 2025 (please consider signing up for the early dates, which are typically the hardest to fill):
- Friday, 2/21 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
- Wednesday, 2/26 10:00 AM-12:00 noon (Appellate Board)
- Friday, 2/28 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
- Friday, 3/7 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
- Wednesday, 3/26 10:00 AM-12:00 noon (Appellate Board)
- Friday, 4/4 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
- Friday, 4/11 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
- Friday, 4/18 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
- Friday, 4/25 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
- Wednesday, 4/30 10:00 AM-12:00 noon (Appellate Board)
- Friday, 5/2 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
- Friday, 5/9 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
- Wednesday, 5/14 10:00 AM-3:00 PM (Study Day)
Here are a few caveats: 1) Before you volunteer, make sure you are in conversation with your supervisor, and 2) Our afternoon hearings occasionally run past 5:00 PM, so if you are on a tight timeline because of family or social commitments, just be aware that once you commit it is really important to have you be available "for the duration" whatever that ends up looking like.
With all that said, please consult your calendar and send Jeff Cullen an email at jcullen@umbc.edu with the date(s) you are available and willing to help out. I will reply and ask you to put a tentative hold on your calendar and then confirm the specific time and nature of the hearing when we get closer to the actual date.
