Welcome, Retrievers Volunteer Opportunity
As we gear up for the start of the new academic year, we are excited to gear up for the Welcome, Retrievers! program—a campus-wide initiative to help our new and returning students feel supported and connected as they arrive at UMBC.
We’re currently seeking volunteers to help with multiple aspects of this program. Whether you’re staffing information tables, prepping materials, or just offering a friendly smile, your participation will make a real difference in helping our students feel at home from day one.
Volunteer shifts are available from 8/11 through 8/29, and you can sign up for one or more time slots based on your availability.
This is a great way to connect with students, meet colleagues from across campus, and showcase the warm, inclusive spirit of the UMBC community.

The ASPIRE Leadership Academy, starting in September 2025, is designed to cultivate our future leaders by equipping aspiring individuals with essential professional competencies and interpersonal skills needed to effectively lead.
ASPIRE is open to all non-supervisory employees past their probationary period who are eager to take the first step on their leadership journey. We are specifically looking for employees who demonstrate:
High potential for leadership - Individuals who show initiative, a willingness to learn, and an eagerness to take on new challenges.)
A commitment to growth - Those who are actively seeking opportunities to develop their skills and advance their careers as faculty and staff
Strong collaboration and teamwork skills - Employees who excel in group settings and contribute positively to collective goals.
Program Details and Time Commitment
ASPIRE is a semester-long, cohort-based experience delivered through a mix of engaging in-person instruction and team coaching. It's an intensive program, and a participant's commitment is key to a rich experience. Important information on the time commitment required:
Class hours: Five 3 hours sessions, every 3 weeks, September through December
Estimated hours outside of class: Up to 2 in between sessions, for individual and group project work. The program will include a group capstone project that will be case-study based - additional details can be found in the overview.
Attendance at all sessions is required. Missing more than one session will result in the inability to graduate from the current ASPIRE Leadership Academy. Participants can complete missing sessions in future ASPIRE cohorts and graduate upon completion.

Participate in the Welcome, Retrievers! Program
Summer has started, but we are already gearing up for the arrival of new students in the Fall! There are lots of opportunities for departments to participate in Welcome, Retrievers! (formerly called Welcome Week) and we hope that everyone that would like to participate has the opportunity to do so. Welcoming new students to UMBC is our collective work and the partnerships and programs that have been offered by departments have been central to the success of the overall program!
Welcome, Retrievers! is excited to invite sign ups and submissions for the following:
Retriever Fest (Saturday, August 23, 2025)
Academic Resource Fair (Monday, August 25, 2025)
Academic Open Houses ((Monday, August 25 - Tuesday, September 9)
Departmental Open Days (Monday, August 25 - Tuesday, September 9)
Welcome, Retrievers! Pre-Existing Event (Monday, August 25 - Tuesday, September 9)

Two opportunities are coming up for Restorative Practices Training!
Training will be 9:00 AM - 5:00 p.m. on both days. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.
About Restorative Practices Training:
- Are you an educator wanting to help your students or colleagues better manage conflicts?
- Are you a leader looking for ways to gain buy-in and develop expectations and goals with your organization?
- Are you looking for resources and guidance on techniques for classroom management?
- Do you want strategies to support community members coping with stress or trauma they carry with them onto campus?
Spend two days digging into role plays, simulations, activities, and theory focused on supporting our community members not only academically, but also psychologically and emotionally. During the sessions you will gain facilitation, community building and conflict management techniques you can implement immediately.
Topics:
- Community Circles: Participants will actively engage in a community circle and delve into social-emotional community building approaches.
- Restorative facilitation techniques: Experience a session integrating restorative techniques into your facilitation skills and practices. Expand your own practice and share with others.
- Standards-Setting Role Play: Observe and participate in role plays to create community standards. These have been used in many contexts including organization vision, mission and goal-setting, classroom management, and conflict resolution.
- Connecting with your community members: Learn a few lessons you can implement in your classroom or organization to create a positive environment where all members are included and accountable.

ESS Mentoring Program
If you're a new hire (less than 3 years at UMBC) or a seasoned pro (3+ years at UMBC), don't miss the deadline to apply. Mentoring program applications are due on Wednesday, April 30. The 2025-2026 program cohort kicks off in July and will run through June 2026. This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with colleagues and grow professionally!
