Community News: Volunteers Needed For Arbutus Arts Festival
From the Greater Arbutus Business Association:
The Arbutus Arts Festival is happening soon and we are in search of more volunteers to help the day of the Festival, May 15th.
Some jobs include:
- Ticket Taking
- Electric Train ride ticket taking
- Pony Ride ticket taking
- Monitoring the following areas: Music Area, Face Painting, Photo Booth, Coloring Table, Chalk Table, Pavilion Seating)
Volunteer optimal shifts: 8 - 11a.m., 11a.m. - 2:00 p.m., 2 - 5:30 p.m. or flexible hours.
If you need a seated volunteer position, we can accommodate you also.
Interested? If you know of anyone looking for high school community service hours, they can get them by volunteering!

Council of University System Staff (CUSS)
CUSS provides a voice for staff concerns about basic decisions that affect the welfare of USM, its constituent institutions, and its employees. CUSS functions in an informed advisory role in administrative areas and in the functional support aspects of academic matters. Bringing together CUSS representatives from campuses within the USM system, CUSS meets once a month, alternating meeting locations at various USM campuses.
Professional Staff Senate
The Professional Staff Senate represents the interests and concerns of the exempt staff at UMBC; certifies elections of members to committees as provided in the Plan of Organization; provides a forum for discussion and recommendations on matters involving exempt staff and the welfare of UMBC; reviews academic and administrative policy as it affects the exempt staff; develops committees and acts within these committees as a vehicle to serve the membership.

What is the Professional Staff Senate (PSS)? We represent you! We are the official representative body of professional, or exempt, staff employed at UMBC. What do we do? We provide a forum for discussing issues involving or of interest to exempt staff members, such as academic and administrative policies. Some of these topics have included work-life balance, campus climate, employee benefits, and state budget updates and impacts. We work diligently to maintain and contribute to community life at UMBC by organizing events for staff and volunteering for non-PSS sponsored events. Each member serves on selected subcommittees of their choosing regarding certain policies or procedures.
What is the Council of University System Staff (CUSS)? Staff serving on the Council represent all staff at UMBC at the system-level. Council representatives and alternates report to the Chancellor and Presidents and share staff concerns across the University System of Maryland (USM). 3 Reasons Why You Should Be a PSS Mentor/Mentee
We asked three people who have been in the program itself what they loved most about being a Mentor or Mentee:
1. The mentoring program has been a great opportunity to connect outside of my organization, getting to know folks I would normally not have opportunity to meet. I’ve always looked forward to the mentor/mentee meetups. A chance to step outside of the routine day-to-day. It’s like a breath of fresh air – a safe space to share knowledge, gain knowledge, and build a long-term professional friendship.
2. I have been a mentee for the past two years, ever since starting my first full-time position here at UMBC. Through the program I have had two mentors at two different points in their career that have been nothing but helpful and a listening ear to my experience. Through the PSS Mentoring Program I have been able to have meaningful conversations with established professionals that offer a space to reflect on my career as it develops and hear their perspectives as they continue to grow. I recommend this experience to any new professional (new to UMBC or otherwise) as it has allowed me to have space away from my regular office and home life to reflect and set goals for myself both in my position and career but while still having these conversations with folks who understand and are connected to the UMBC community. Love this program!
3. I have enjoyed being part of the PSS Mentoring Program because it has allowed me to connect with people in other offices on campus who have different experiences. I like being able to work them with, get advice, and grow my network.
