University System of Maryland Shared Governance Survey
Share your thoughts by June 21
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Council of University System Staff (CUSS) and the Council of University System Faculty (CUSF), we are seeking your participation in a brief survey to gauge your awareness of and the strengths and growth opportunities for shared governance efforts on your campus and within the University System of Maryland. When functioning properly, shared governance, for those who are unaware, is a system where committee(s) of faculty, staff, and students advise campus/system leadership on policies/procedures/issues, giving a voice to all three groups.
This survey is anonymous (the survey platform will not collect any identifying information from respondents, including IP and email addresses) and should take no more than five minutes to complete. The responses of this survey will be analyzed, aggregated, and shared with the leadership both on your campus and at the University System of Maryland.

Become a Mentor or Mentee - Application Closes Friday!
The 2024-2025 Staff Senate Mentoring Program is seeking both mentees and mentors. Share your UMBC and career experience, or gain valuable insights and advice from a mentor!
Why Participate?
"Years ago, when the program first started, I signed up as a mentee and it was life changing. My mentor helped me think about things I hadn't considered before, and I still think about those conversations today because they literally helped shape my path at UMBC. Today, as a mentor, I am grateful to have had the chance to work with so many wonderful mentees. It feels like an important "pay it forward" practice, and that's why I come back year after year." Jenny O'Grady, pictured on the left with her mentees, Samantha Sullivan and Maria Cambraia.
- Mentees: Staff with less than 3 years of UMBC experience can gain valuable guidance and insights.
- Mentors: Staff with over 3 years of experience can share their knowledge and help shape the next generation of UMBC leaders.

What are PSS & CUSS?
Professional Staff Senate (PSS)
The Professional Staff Senate represents the interests and concerns of the exempt staff at UMBC; certifies elections of members to committees as provided in the Plan of Organization; provides a forum for discussion and recommendations on matters involving exempt staff and the welfare of UMBC; reviews academic and administrative policy as it affects the exempt staff; develops committees and acts within these committees as a vehicle to serve the membership.
Council of University System Staff (CUSS)
CUSS provides a voice for staff concerns about basic decisions that affect the welfare of USM, its constituent institutions, and its employees. CUSS functions in an informed advisory role in administrative areas and in the functional support aspects of academic matters. Bringing together CUSS representatives from campuses within the USM system, CUSS meets once a month, alternating meeting locations at various USM campuses.

What is the Professional Staff Senate (PSS)? We represent you! We are the official representative body of professional, or exempt, staff employed at UMBC. What do we do? We provide a forum for discussing issues involving or of interest to exempt staff members, such as academic and administrative policies. Some of these topics have included work-life balance, campus climate, employee benefits, and state budget updates and impacts. We work diligently to maintain and contribute to community life at UMBC by organizing events for staff and volunteering for non-PSS sponsored events. Each member serves on selected subcommittees of their choosing regarding certain policies or procedures.
What is the Council of University System Staff (CUSS)? Staff serving on the Council represent all staff at UMBC at the system-level. Council representatives and alternates report to the Chancellor and Presidents and share staff concerns across the University System of Maryland (USM). UMBC will have 6 CUSS members including 3 Representatives (2 Exempt & 1 Non-Exempt) and 3 Alternates (2 Exempt & 1 Non-Exempt).
