Campus Climate Survey Take the Campus Climate Survey and have lunch on OEI!

The 2022 campus climate survey was launched today! Information gathered from the survey will be used to inform our ongoing education, prevention, and response work, and is an important component in campus-wide efforts to stop, prevent, and remedy the effects of sexual misconduct at UMBC.


The first 150 students who complete the survey will receive $10 in Retriever dollars. Additionally, all students who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing to win one of five $100 Amazon gift cards. 


You can access the online survey here. The survey will be open from Monday, April 11, 2022 until Monday, April 25, 2022 and will take about 15-25 minutes to complete. This survey is anonymous and confidential; after completing the Campus Climate Survey, you will be prompted to enter your name and email address in a separate voluntary incentive survey


Content note: This survey asks some questions about personal experiences with sexual and interpersonal violence. Some of the language used in this survey is explicit and direct, and may be triggering or uncomfortable for some participants. Information on how to get help, if you need it, appears before and after the survey and is available at any time on OEI’s website.

Ramadan is a month dedicated to fasting, spirituality & worship, and charity & community. Ramadan is expected to begin Saturday, April 2. The last day of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, is expected to begin on the evening of May 1. During Ramadan, Muslims around the world fast during daylight hours and increase in their spiritual devotional acts such as prayer and giving to charity. It is the holiest month of the Muslim year and follows the lunar calendar. During this month, no food or drink (including water) may be taken from dawn to dusk Worshippers eat a pre-dawn light meal, called suhoor. After dusk, Muslims break the fast with an evening meal called iftar.

Given Ramadan’s placement during the academic year, this will impact Muslim students, staff, and faculty in various ways. In addition to being aware of this religious observance, you can support members of the Muslim community this month in the following ways:

Ramadan Observance at UMBC

Ramadan Observance is being hosted by the Muslim Student Association. From April 2 through May 2, 2022, the Center for Well-Being hours will be temporarily expanded to 4:30 am - 1:00 am. The Gathering Space corridor (rooms 109 and 105) will be accessible during these times, but the conference rooms and the second floor will not be open. 


Participating students are expected to ensure that the space is left clean and organized, and all materials and supplies are put neatly away so that the space can be ready for use during regular business hours. This includes ensuring that ALL food products have been appropriately disposed of and cleaned. Participating students are expected to follow the student code of conduct, and respect the space and property of i3b and the Center for Well-Being. Students can also take advantage of the varied prayer, reflection, and meditation spaces across campus, which can be found here.

As we start the new semester, we are reminded that the work of inclusion and equity is never complete, either at UMBC or elsewhere across the nation. I am grateful for all of the support that the University community has given the Office of Equity and Inclusion over the past two years as we created a new model of support for community members while at the same time responding to the pandemic, political divisiveness, and more. Given the vital role this office plays in our campus community, I wanted to share some changes. 
 
Morgan C. Thomas '13 will serve as our Acting Director and Title IX Coordinator. During her time at UMBC, Morgan has demonstrated her passion and commitment to both this community and the work of inclusive excellence. Morgan also served on the Retriever Courage Implementation Team. In addition to these responsibilities, Morgan continues to serve the campus community in contract review and handling of Maryland Public Information Act requests on behalf of the University.
 
Ever Hanna will serve as our Acting Deputy Title IX Coordinator and continue to lead our training efforts and case management. The work Ever has accomplished since joining our community has strengthened the University's culture of care while addressing inequities on our campus.
 
Jordan Brooks will continue to serve as a Civil Rights Investigator and to help manage cases in the office. Jordan joined the team in 2021 and is looking forward to in-person connections with our campus community over the next couple of months. Jordan previously worked in student affairs at several colleges and is focused on making our campus a safe and welcoming community for everyone.   
 
We also have begun the search for an additional Civil Rights Investigator to support the work of the office.
 
In the coming weeks, we look forward to sharing key next steps for the work of both the Office of Equity and Inclusion and the Inclusion Council. We appreciate your support and partnership, and our attention to the work that the community has entrusted us with remains unwavering.

Time to Celebrate UMBC Black & Latine/x Graduating Students

This evening event celebrates the wonderful achievements of UMBC’s  Black and Latina/e/o/x graduating seniors and graduate students. Black and Latine/x students have been historically underrepresented in post-secondary degree attainment and have overcome incredible odds to succeed and make an invaluable contribution to the wider UMBC community. 

 

This ceremony is in recognition of this milestone of our Black and Latine/x students as well as an evening to be in community with all the staff, faculty, alumni, and loved ones that have supported them. Seniors and graduate students graduating in Spring and Fall 2022 will be recognized and receive a Black and Brown honor cords, as well as a special CBLA Black and Brown pin! To receive your Black and Brown honor cords and pin, please fill out our Lavender and Black & Latine/x Celebration Social Media Campaign + Graduation Package Form [Link Coming Soon]. A time to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ graduates

Please join us for i3b's 9th Annual Lavender Celebration. An evening to celebrate the wonderful achievements of UMBC’s LGBTQIA+ graduating seniors, graduate students, and their allies. LGBTQIA+ students overcome incredible odds to succeed and make a difference at UMBC. This ceremony is in recognition of LGBTQIA+ students and in recognition of all the allied staff, faculty, alumnx, and programs that work to support them. Graduating seniors and graduate students who RSVP will be recognized and receive lavender honor cords. Award categories will encompass student, staff, faculty, and programmatic efforts, and will include recognition for LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as allies to the community.

The Black Graduate Student organization is planning its third annual Ebony Ball and Award Ceremony. It will be an in-person event, and the projected date is Saturday, February 26th at 6 PM in the Skylight room (Commons). Tickets will go on sale on Monday, January 31st. 

Our keynote speaker for this year is American politician, founder, and educator, and wife of the late Congressman Elijah Cummings, Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings. 

Every year, we give out awards to Black students, faculty, and staff who have excelled and done amazing things on and off campus. We will be taking nominations from now until Friday, January 28th, 2022. To submit your nominations, please use this link: https://forms.gle/zGsXD7fv5tzzpFgo9.

Solidarity with the Ethiopian Community in the U.S and Abroad

It has been more than a year since the Ethiopian government declared a state of emergency and the country went to war.  Thousands of people have died; many more have experienced violence, sexual violence, fire, shortages of resources and lack of access to medical care in what has become a humanitarian crisis.

As we enter the holiday season and express our thanks for family and community, UMBC stands in solidarity with the Ethiopian community in the U.S and abroad.  We hope that the next year will bring peace and healing for families and communities across Ethiopia, Eritrea, and worldwide.

We want to take this opportunity to note the care and support resources available to impacted community members.

  • The Office of Equity and Inclusion Provides support and resources to students, faculty and staff through conflict resolution, investigation, education, training, outreach and engagement.  Contact us at oei@umbc.edu or report a concern through our online reporting tool.

  • The Division of Student Affairs Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (i3b) Provides a safe and inclusive space for students and staff and student organizations in need of support. i3b@umbc.edu or 410-455-2686.

  • The UMBC Counseling Center provides students with free confidential counseling and mental health services or referrals to off-campus services. 410-455-2472, or make an appointment through the Retriever Care Portal. Contact the After-Hours Support Line at 410-455-3230 evenings, weekends or when the University is closed.

  • The Employee Assistance Program Provides employees and members of their households confidential free access to the USM Employee Assistance Program (EAP) including counseling and resources to assist with personal and work-life issues. 855-410-7628 or go online and enter company ID: USMEAP.

  • International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) Provides advice, support and programming to help international students and scholars maintain immigration status and programming and opportunities for intercultural exchange and mutual understanding to enhance the UMBC international student and scholar experience. isss@umbc.edu or 410-455-2624.
