What is Linguistic Diversity?Online
How can we strive to make our campus a more inclusive place for users of different languages and varieties? This session will focus on the centrality of language to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.  We will cover challenges such as linguistic bias, linguistic racism and discrimination, and linguistic microaggressions as well as discuss strategies for actively creating linguistic inclusion, access and equity across our campus community and beyond.

Dear UMBC Community,

As you may recall, President Sheares Ashby announced in August that UMBC would begin a national search for a new vice president position to lead diversity, equity, and inclusion work across the campus.

As a key next step, we have assembled a search committee which includes students, faculty, and staff who will work with search firm Isaacson Miller to identify outstanding candidates for the Vice President for Institutional Equity and Chief Diversity Officer role. The committee members are:

Interested in getting involved in social justice activism while at UMBC, but not sure where to start?  Come out to the Women's Center to hang out and meet other activists*, see how you can get involved at UMBC, and learn more about our programs and events you can get involved in throughout the year.  RSVP below!

 *Don't be intimated by the word activist! All are welcomed so don't discount your experiences or fret over labels. You do not need to identify as an activist to attend - in fact, we'll talk more about that when you get here!

Dear UMBC Community,

We are pleased to announce an update to our self-service pathway to allow students to indicate their chosen middle and last names in addition to their chosen first names, pronouns, and gender identity in university administrative systems. Beginning this month, students can log into their myUMBC profile and update their chosen middle and last names. This process is optional and voluntary. More detail on how students may update their information is available here.

Students' chosen names are provided to faculty and staff through university administrative systems, such as PeopleSoft and myUMBC. Please note that the display of this information may differ from system to system. For example, not all university administrative systems currently accommodate chosen middle names.

The expanded name options build on prior work enabling students to indicate their chosen first name, pronouns, and gender identity. We invite you to view this brief video for more insight on the expanded chosen name initiative, including reminders on how to verify students' identity when working in campus systems.

Thank you to the diverse group of campus partners who worked together to implement this new process, and thank you for all you do everyday to make UMBC a safe, caring, and inclusive learning community.

Celebrate with the American Council on Education, Women's Leadership Speaker Series

Title IX passed 50 years ago.

Since that momentous event on June 23, 1972, the education sector has been realizing advances in gender equity and sex discrimination has been prohibited in any educational program or activity receiving federal funds.

Help us celebrate this milestone and join our discussion on progress made so far and plans for the next 50 years. We will acknowledge the many accomplishments resulting from Title IX passage and consider future legislative implications that aim to accomplish optimum gender equity across every aspect of higher education.

Each event in the series will provide our state networks with the opportunity to engage with these leaders and experts, host conversations about important topics with women leaders in their states, and promote action that strengthens the pipeline for women’s leadership in higher education.

LGBTQIA+ students overcome incredible odds to succeed and make a difference at UMBC. This ceremony is in recognition of LGBTQIA+ students and in recognition of all the allied staff, faculty, alumnx, and programs that work to support them. Graduating seniors and graduate students who RSVP will be recognized and receive lavender honor cords. To receive your Lavender honor cords and pin, please fill out our Lavender and Black & Latine/x Celebration Social Media Campaign + Graduation Package Form. Black and Latine/x Graduation Celebration

Time to Celebrate UMBC Black & Latine/x Graduating Students

The Commons : Skylight

This evening event celebrates the wonderful achievements of UMBC’s  Black and Latina/e/o/x graduating seniors and graduate students. Black and Latine/x students have been historically underrepresented in post-secondary degree attainment and have overcome incredible odds to succeed and make an invaluable contribution to the wider UMBC community. 

 

This ceremony is in recognition of this milestone of our Black and Latine/x students as well as an evening to be in community with all the staff, faculty, alumni, and loved ones that have supported them. Seniors and graduate students graduating in Spring and Fall 2022 will be recognized and receive a Black and Brown honor cords, as well as a special CBLA Black and Brown pin! To receive your Black and Brown honor cords and pin, please fill out our Lavender and Black & Latine/x Celebration Social Media Campaign + Graduation Package Form. DEADLINE to receive cords: May 6, 2022 at 9:00a.m. Award categories will encompass student, staff, faculty, and programmatic efforts, and will include recognition for Black and Latine/x community members, as well as their allies.
