Jessica Berman Delivers Keynote Lecture at International Conference in Estonia

Jessica Berman, Professor of English, recently delivered a keynote lecture at an international conference on transnational modernist women's writing in Estonia. Read a message from Berman about her experience here:

In early October I was honored to present an invited keynote lecture at the conference on "Borders, Margins, Cartographies: Transnational Modernist Women’s Writing" at the University of Tartu, Estonia. My talk, “Transing Modernism in Argentina”, based on my nearly complete book, explored gender and embodiment in Argentine modernism on the radio and in print. The conference was full of exciting work from an international group of scholars on little known women writers of the twentieth century. I also had a chance to explore a bit of Estonia, which was great! It's a beautiful country with a rich history that I'm glad to have learned about. I'm grateful to have been able to visit.

Berman delivers her keynote lecture at the University of Tartu conference.

New Alumni Spotlight! Read a Message from Harley Nguyen, '21

Harley Nguyen (’21) is a former English major who is now pursuing his Master’s degree in English Literature at the University of Maryland, College Park.

When I entered UMBC, I knew I was going to be an English major despite my first-generation immigrant parents’ protests. I found a lot of joy in literature classes that challenged me to think, speak publicly, and write critically, so I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. I’m a poet at heart, and I was never too interested in having that be my only focus. I enjoy seeing what doing things outside of my purview, like medieval literature or early American literature courses, could do for my writing. My professors celebrated how diverse the literature canon is. Despite being a first-generation college student whose time was fractured by COVID-19 I was able to participate in the many organizations tied to the department, like The Retriever, English Honors Project, Retriever Poets, and felt supported by the many committed professors

in the department.

There is no neat ending to this story: my graduation was quite haphazard in the midst of the lockdown, and life in my early 20’s has been quite an adventure. My many careers have been food service, nonprofit work in DC, freelance writing and copyediting, and academic publishing. My current adventure is graduate school, getting my Master’s in English Literature at UMD, something I suggest students only do with full funding (as I have done). My future is not set in stone: I can see myself returning to nonprofit, getting my MFA and/or Ph.D., teaching at community colleges, or going back to the corporate world. A lot of the skills I learned at UMBC—how to write well, how to communicate productively with my community—have been crucial for this adventure, but my career options remain open at this stage. Since there is such a variety of career paths open to humanities majors, students have to be resourceful and open-minded about what they can do. Being able to communicate clearly with people is really invaluable.

I owe a lot to Professors Emily K. Yoon, Keegan Finberg, Lia Purpura, Lindsay DiCuirci, and Sharon Tran, who are some of the best people I have ever met. Their commitment to their students and the arduous labor they have done for the department left a lasting impact on what I will do in the future.

Author, musician, and scholar Earl H. Brooks argues that there would have been no Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Movement, or Black Arts Movement as we know these phenomena without Black music. Through rhetorical studies, archival research, and musical analysis, Brooks establishes the "sonic lexicon of Black music," defined by a distinct constellation of sonic and auditory features that bridge cultural, linguistic, and political spheres with music. Genres of Black music such as blues and jazz are discursive fields, where swinging, improvisation, call-and-response, blue notes, and other musical idioms serve as rhetorical tools to articulate the feelings, emotions, and states of mind that have shaped African American cultural and political development. Examining the resounding artistry of iconic musicians such as Scott Joplin, Mary Lou Williams, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Mahalia Jackson, this work offers an alternative register in which these musicians and composers are heard as public intellectuals, consciously invested in crafting rhetorical projects they knew would influence the public sphere.

In particular, most of the reading public is unaware that “pride and prejudice” was a traditional critique adopted by British and American antislavery writers. After Austen’s lifetime, the antislavery associations intensified, especially in America.

This is the only book about the tradition and the many newly discovered uses of “pride and prejudice” before and after Austen’s popular novel. Hundreds of examples in an annotated list show the phrase used to uphold independence—independent judgment, independent ethical behavior, independence that repudiated all forms of oppression. The book demonstrates how, in a natural evolution, the phrase was used to criticize enslavement and the slave trade. Eighteenth-century revolutionary Thomas Paine used it in Common Sense, and nineteenth-century abolitionist Frederick Douglass used it throughout his lifetime. Choosing her title for these resonances, Austen supported independent reason, reinforced writing by women, and opposed enslavement.

When he isn’t writing, he can be found curating playlists, watching
ocean documentaries, or flipping through various art books. You can read his work here.

Palestinian culture and life from the perspective of a young woman
growing up estranged from her ancestral land. You can read her work here.
