English Graduate Students Serve as Reviewers for SSAWW 2018

Two graduate students in the Master of Arts in Texts, Technologies, and Literature program here at UMBC recently joined nearly fifty other reviewers to evaluate conference proposals as part of the Society for the Study of American Women Writers (SSAWW) Triennial Conference, which will be held in Denver later this year. Gian McCann and Alex Sutter’s thoughtful reviews and constructive comments were lauded by SSAWW Conference Program Director, Dr. Christopher Allen Varlack, as invaluable in not only developing a strong program offering to conference attendees but also in strengthening the papers that participants ultimately produce. The English Department is incredibly proud of our graduate students and their eagerness to participate in vital service roles to the profession; we look forward to seeing how their work progresses as the next generation of leaders and innovators in the field.

Writing Center Tutors and Director to Present at MAWCA

The English Department here at UMBC is pleased to announce that three of our stellar tutors in the Writing Center—located on the first floor of the Albin O. Kuhn Library—as well as Director of the Writing Center, Elaine MacDougall, will be travelling to Rowan University from March 23-24, 2018 to present at the Mid-Atlantic Writing Center Association (MAWCA) Conference.

Olivia Hardy (Health Administration and Policy Program)

“Notes from a Stanger in a Strange Land” Story Session

In a story session style presentation, I plan to explain how I find myself actively trying to dismantle some of the connotations that surround the Writing Center and how I place an importance on establishing acceptance and creating a safe space where individuals from every background feel that they have a safe space on campus. This is in part achieved by 1) being individual and 2) being accepting.

Tanya Ramsey (Psychology/Social Work) and Domenique Brown (English/Psychology)

"Narrating Past Privilege Through Social Identity" Roundtable

In order to evaluate the perpetuation of dominant cultural values in writing, participants will have the opportunity to complete self-assessments to discover the degree of privilege that has affected them personally as well as explore their social identity in concrete terms. The group will collectively debrief after each assessment by engaging in a reflective dialogue and answering questions of how this activity has enlightened their position within the workplace and respectfully discuss dynamics that these differences may present. In other words, this roundtable offers interpersonal relations reflections of identity and privilege to better tutor-client relations via social conflict theory, evaluating and co-creating best practices to strengthen the author’s voice within narrative compositions.

Elaine MacDougall (Director of the Writing Center/English Lecturer)

"The Power of Silence and Stillness in Writing Center Conversations"

Many of our conversations today are fragmented and distracted due to our fast-paced, technological world. How can writing tutors then utilize silence and stillness to create mindful, non-judgmental sessions with their peers? This presentation will examine the ways in which creating a space where silence, stillness, and listening are encouraged can deepen our conversations and connections in the Writing Center, which could help reduce anxiety surrounding the writing process.

Is graduate school in your future? The accelerated BA/MA program in Texts, Technologies, and Literature (TTL) here at UMBC is an excellent option worth considering if you are a sophomore or junior with a 3.0 minimum GPA (and a 3.5 GPA in English). This innovative program is designed for students who are considering an academic or teaching career as well as those entering a variety of other professions—ones that may involve communications, text production and analysis, and digital media. It also enables students to further their understanding of literature and a broad array of other texts, including digital, academic, and those we use everyday. The BA/MA program is therefore an exciting opportunity to propel your English education, supported by a growing faculty of scholars and innovators in their field.

Through the TTL program, some of our students have gone on to pursue additional education in law school and doctoral programs across the country, eager to make a difference in communities near and far. Others have used the knowledge and skills gained through our program to publish and present at conferences, sharing their work with the world. This includes students such as:

Trevor Ruben, ’17, who published an article, “Why Micotransaction and Loot Boxes Are Destroying Games,” in Rolling Stone after completing a dynamic thesis on the unique aspects of decision design in video games

Joseph Nash, ’17, who presented a paper entitled, “Vipassana and The Pale King: Toward a More Useful Spiritual Vocabulary,” inspired by his research for his MA thesis on David Foster Wallace’s Pale King

Deborah Kadiri, ’16, who published a modified version of her portfolio work as “Social Media Meets Social Justice: The Role of the Hashtag in the Contemporary Conversation on Race” in Critical Insights: Civil Rights Literature, Past & Present (Salem 2017)

If you are interested in potentially joining this exciting program and taking your English education to the next level, please visit our website at http://www.english.umbc.edu or contact Dr. Lucille McCarthy, Graduate Program Director, at mccarthy@umbc.edu for more information today.

Exciting Faculty News: January

The English Department is home to a productive,
award-winning faculty whose members pursue both research and creative activity
across the many diverse fields of English today. In celebrating that work, we
would like to acknowledge some of our recent accomplishments:

In December, Jessica Berman presented the closing keynote
address entitled, “The Case for a Transnational Critical Optic, Now,” to
the Literature and the World: Theories, Concepts, Debates Symposium at
Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. In January, she also presided
at a roundtable on “Memory and the Archive” at the Modern Language Association
    Convention in New York.

Margie Burns has had a proposal accepted for “The Female
Precariat” panel at Northeast Modern Language Association Convention in April.
Her paper is titled, “Then and now: the adjunct phenomenon, updated, 19[91] –
now.” Her article on Jane Austen’s Susan will
appear in Persuasions 2017 in May
    2018.

Mike Fallon’s poem, “The Music of What Happens,” was
accepted for publication by Crosswinds Poetry
    Journal.

Jean Fernandez gave a lecture entitled, “Revisiting the
Bronte Sisters,” in honor of their bicentennial anniversary, at Montgomery
College in December as part of their Adults Seeking Knowledge guest lecture
    series.

Shane Moritz’s poem, “Spring,” was accepted for publication
in Ramingo’s Porch and his poem, “Whoop,”
was accepted for publication in the April 2018 issue of Baltimore Style.

Congratulations on these incredible accomplishments—just a
small sampling of the innovative and important work that our faculty produce
throughout the year. We certainly look forward to seeing what the English
    Department faculty will do next.

Exciting Faculty News: November

The English Department is home to a productive,
award-winning faculty whose members pursue research and creative activity
across the many diverse fields of English Studies today. In celebrating that
work, we would like to acknowledge some of our recent accomplishments:

Mike Fallon’s poem, “Henge,” was included on the last page
of the recent UMBC Magazine. The poem
was inspired by the Thomas Sayre sculpture, “Forum,” outside of the Performing
Arts and Humanities Building. His poem, “Dreams of Exile,” has also been
published in the fall issue of the Crosswinds
Poetry Journal and his poem, “A Litany of Dust,” appears in Illuminations.

YesYes Books will publish Dr. Tanya Olson’s next book, Stay, in March 2019.

Sally Shivnan has accepted an offer from The Short Story
Project to purchase the foreign translation, digital, and audio rights to her
    short story collection, Piranhas &
Quicksand & Love. Her book review of the novel The Crows of Beara also appeared in The Washington Independent Review of Books in September.

Congratulations on these incredible accomplishments. We look
forward to seeing what the English Department faculty will do next.
