<Title>Faculty Member Dr. Lindsay DiCuirci Wins National Book Prize</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Lindsay DiCuirci's book, <em><a href="https://www.upenn.edu/pennpress/book/15873.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Colonial Revivals: The Nineteenth-Century Lives of Early American Print </a></em>(Penn
     Press, 2019) has been awarded the 2020 Bibliographical Society of 
    America's St. Louis Mercantile Library Prize. This prize is awarded 
    every three years to an outstanding work of scholarship in the 
    bibliography of American history and literature. Dr. DiCuirci shares the
     award with Dr. Derrick Spires, associate professor of African-American

<Title>UMBC English Alum Wins National Educator of the Year Award</Title>

    <div class="html-content">UMBC English alum Sean Pang '09 <span>has been chosen for the <a href="https://www.nshss.org/educators/educator-of-the-year/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2019 Claes Nobel Educator of the Year Award</a>. Pang teaches English and media arts at Rockville High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. </span>Congratulations, Sean!<div><br></div><div>According to Montgomery County Media, "<span>Pang received a $1,000 grant, which he 
    plans to use to film a documentary that brings light to financial issues
     in Montgomery County that he believes go unnoticed. He hopes that the 
    exposure will raise money for county businesses and shelters that help

    <div class="html-content"><div>Today, Dr. Earl Brooks and MD senator Mary Washington will be speaking on "Rhetoric and Social Justice." The event will be held in the AOK Library Gallery at 4:00 PM. We hope to see you there!</div><div><br></div><em>Previous post:</em><br><div><br></div><div>On Tuesday, November 26 Dr. Earl Brooks will be hosting Maryland state senator Mary Washington for a discussion about "Rhetoric and Social 
    Justice." Just this week, <a href="https://www.baltimorebrew.com/2019/11/19/mary-washington-enters-race-for-baltimore-mayor/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Washington announced that she will be running for mayor of Baltimore</a>.     will join Dr. Earl Brooks, the students of ENGL 300, and the greater 
    UMBC community to discuss the intersection of rhetoric and social 
    justice.</div><div><br></div><div>In 2010, Senator Washington made history when she became the first openly LGBTQ 
    African-American elected official in Maryland – and only the second such
     state legislator in the country. In her seven-plus years in the House 
    of Delegates since, she has distinguished herself as a leader fighting 
    for affordable access to water, protecting families at risk of losing 
    their homes to unfair tax sales and foreclosures, making sure Baltimore 
    city schools get the fair and equitable funding they deserve and helping
     unaccompanied homeless youth get the services and support they need.</div><br><p>Senator
     Washington is currently a member of Women Legislators of Maryland and 
    the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland and an Associate Member of the 
    Latino Legislative Caucus. She is also a part-time faculty member at the
     Maryland
     Institute College of Art (MICA) and teaches public policy and sociology

    will join Dr. Earl Brooks, the students of ENGL 300, and the greater 
    UMBC community to discuss the intersection of rhetoric and social 
    justice.</div><div><br></div><div>In 2010, Senator Washington made history when she became the first openly LGBTQ 
    African-American elected official in Maryland – and only the second such
     state legislator in the country. In her seven-plus years in the House 
    of Delegates since, she has distinguished herself as a leader fighting 
    for affordable access to water, protecting families at risk of losing 
    their homes to unfair tax sales and foreclosures, making sure Baltimore 
    city schools get the fair and equitable funding they deserve and helping
     unaccompanied homeless youth get the services and support they need.</div><br><p>Senator
     Washington is currently a member of Women Legislators of Maryland and 
    the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland and an Associate Member of the 
    Latino Legislative Caucus. She is also a part-time faculty member at the
     Maryland
     Institute College of Art (MICA) and teaches public policy and sociology

Corbin Jones, M.A. Candidate in the Text, Technologies, and Literature and the Dresher Center's Fall 2019 Graduate Student Research Fellow, will be delivering his talk, "ibn Batuta and the Fashioned Self Image." An abstract of the talk is copied below.</div><div><br></div><div>The event will <span><span>begin at noon, following lunch served at 11:30 AM, in the Dresher Center Conference Room, PAHB 216. <br></span></span></div><div><br></div><div><strong>ibn Batuta and the Fashioned Self Image</strong><br><br><em>Corbin Jones, M.A. Candidate in the Text, Technologies, and Literatures Program; Fall 2019 Graduate Student Research Fellow</em><br><br>The 13th century Maghrebi judge and consummate scholar ibn Battuta can be known as witty, pious, cosmopolitan, and a bit egotistical through his travel writings, among them A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Traveling. Much of this image of the man comes from his own attempts to rhetorically define himself. The fascinating thing is that the self-image of the traveler is also fashioned by the people and things he encounters on his journey. <Title>Oct. 10: Lia Purpura to Appear in Fall for the Book Festival</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>This week, Lia Purpura will be joining an impressive lineup of authors at George Mason University's 21st annual Fall for the Book festival! See below for a press release from the festival with more info:<br></div><div><br></div><div>Fall for the Book returns for its 21st year with a star-studded lineup of headliners including essayist and novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, novelist Delia Owens, young adult novelist Rainbow Rowell, and true crime writer, David Grann. Featured writers are David Wallace-Wells presenting the Beck Environmental Lecture, Governor Terry McAuliffe, Senator Janet Howell, and more. The festival, which runs from October 10-12, 2019 will welcome a robust list of poets, historians, novelists, memoirists, children’s authors, YA writers and more at George Mason University’s Fairfax campus, and at locations around Northern Virginia. All festival events are free and open to the public. </div><br><strong>Joining the lineup this year is Lia Purpura author of “All the Fierce Tethers”, who will be presenting on October 10, 3 pm, at Johnson Center, Meeting Room E. </strong><br><br>The event, called “Life in Observation” focusing on writing about the complex relationships between one’s personal life and the natural environment.<br><br>About the author: <br><div>Lia Purpura is the author of eight collections of essays, poems, and translations. Her awards include a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, NEA and Fulbright Fellowships and four Pushcard Prizes. On Looking (essays), was a Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her poems and essays appear in the New Yorker, The New Republic, Orion, Emergence, and elsewhere. She lives in Baltimore, MD and is Writer in Residence at UMBC.</div><div><br></div><img src="https://english.umbc.edu/files/2019/10/FallForTheBook.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"><br></div>
