English Department Reading Series is proud to present its fall reader:
fiction writer Ron Tanner. This event will take place on October 26th at
5:00 p.m. in the Skylight Room (located on the third floor of The
    Commons).

Ron Tanner’s writing has been named
“notable” in both Best American Essays and Best American Short Stories. His
awards for fiction include the G.S.
Sharat Chandra Prize, the Jack Dyer Prize, the Charles Angoff Prize, the
Faulkner Society gold medal, Pushcart Prize, New Letters Award, and many
others, as well as fellowships from the Michener/Copernicus Society, Sewanee
Writers Conference, and the National Park Service, to name a few. His
novel Missile Paradise was named a “notable book of 2017” by
the American Library Association. His most recent book, Far West, a
story collection, won the Elixir Press book prize in 2020. He lives on an
historic farm in Maryland and directs the Good Contrivance Farm Writer’s Retreat,
    an educational nonprofit.

The ten
stories in Ron Tanner's new collection, Far West, range
widely--from a ruined fashion shoot in Baja California to a thwarted romance on
a Pacific island. Quirky, funny, and sometimes near-tragic, these tales explore
the idea of “frontier,” both emotional and geographic, as Tanner’s characters
test the boundaries of their ambitions and strive mightily to realize their
ever-elusive (American) dream. The author, who has lived and traveled
extensively in America’s West, renders these landscapes with sensitivity and
beauty, delivering with each story a journey that promises the unexpected at
    every turn.

Read her update below:

"The Soccer Without Borders Summer Learning Academy is a program that provides academic support to the immigrant population in the Baltimore community, as well as building community and promoting teamwork through teaching children how to play soccer. They have a host of different workshops, activities, and classes to support this community. Their target communities include immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers from around the world. I got involved in this program after taking the PRAC 096 and ENGL 386 courses. These classes introduced me to the world of ESOL and taught me more about the experiences of immigrants in America. I was encouraged and given the resources by my professors to pursue different ESOL teaching opportunities. It was a very fulfilling and enriching experience."

Dr. Raphael Falco wins the 2021 Elizabeth Agee Book Prize

The literary establishment tends to regard Bob Dylan as an intriguing,
if baffling, outsider. That changed overnight when Dylan was awarded the
2016 Nobel Prize in Literature, challenging us to think of him as an
integral part of our national and international literary heritage. No One to Meet: Imitation and Originality in the Songs of Bob Dylan places
Dylan the artist within a long tradition of literary production and
offers an innovative way of understanding his unique, and often
    controversial, methods of composition.

In lucid prose, Raphael Falco demonstrates the similarity between what Renaissance writers called imitatio and
the way Dylan borrows, digests, and transforms traditional songs.
Although Dylan's lyrical postures might suggest a post-Romantic, "avant-garde" consciousness, No One to Meet shows that Dylan's creative process borrows from and creatively expands the methods used by classical and Renaissance authors.

Drawing on numerous examples, including Dylan's previously unseen
manuscript excerpts and archival materials, Raphael Falco illuminates
how the ancient process of poetic imitation, handed down from
Greco-Roman antiquity, allows us to make sense of Dylan's musical and
lyrical technique. By placing Dylan firmly in the context of an age-old
poetic practice, No One to Meet deepens our appreciation of Dylan's songs and allows us to celebrate him as what he truly is: a great writer.

Dr. Falco's book will become available for purchase on September 20th, 2022 here as well as all major online book stores.

English Department Student Spotlight

<Tagline>Celebrating another successful year!</Tagline>

Here are a few highlights:

Desiree Sterling, 2021-2022 Fellow of Pennsylvania State University's Cooper-Du Bois Mentoring Program

"This highly selective program offers a supportive cohort for historically excluded scholars to explore paths to doctoral studies in English and African American/Diaspora Studies. As a part of this year's cohort, I had the privilege of interacting with Penn State's faculty. This accomplishment perfectly aligns with my intellectual aspirations as a current student in UMBC's Text, Technologies, and Literature M.A. program and has enriched my research prospects and academic interests. Moreover, joining this network of seasoned scholars and budding researchers (saturated with impressive knowledge and practical wisdom) has amplified my passion for this area of research."

Rowland Smith, California Institute of the Arts Creative Writing M.F.A. Program

"I was recently accepted into the California Institute of the Arts in Santa Clarita, California, for their Creative Writing MFA Program in their school of Critical Studies! I do not have a specified discipline yet, but I am interested in their "Writing and Performativity" track, which seeks to incorporate kinesthetic and musical notions as tools for writing. I'm very excited about this as I've long admired the school! My uncle used to take me on tours of the campus when I was a child. This program offers an excellent opportunity to incorporate both my English Lit Degree and my Acting Degree."

Ari Page, Graduating M.A. Student, thesis: (Trans)formative Works: Fanfiction, Authorship, and the Digital Lives of Transgender Fans

"While fandom has historically been a discursive space for fans to read against the grain of a text and create limit-defying paratextual transformations of a source text, trans fans have typically been left out of fan studies' analyses of fandom or regarded in the same terms as queer sexuality in fannish practices. Trans fans have unique reading and writing practices worthy of their own considerations within fan studies, and fandom itself is a rich site for trans identification. I look toward trans fans' creative responses to Teen Wolf, Steven Universe, and Ouran High School Host Club that center affect, create earnest representations of trans bodies, and challenge the limits of fan studies' notions of queerness and the body. My project calls for a new theoretical lens that uses modes of fannish interpretation that typically center on sexual identification for how we analyze the ways in which trans euphoria can be accessed through fannish creativity."

Zaira Girala Munoz, accepted into three different PhD programs, attending The Ohio State University English M.A./Ph.D. program

"I have decided to attend The Ohio State University for graduate school! Ultimately, OSU's tremendous funding offer, the kindness and empathy of the grad students and faculty, and their demonstrated commitment to graduate student well-being made OSU my choice in the end. I will also be joining UMBC (and other) McNair alum that I know within the humanities depts and beyond at OSU. My research interests sit at the interfaces of technical communication, minority studies, and the rhetoric of science and medicine. Specifically, I am interested in how medical and scientific institutions frame uncertainty within the broader context of the reproducibility crisis and how these discourses rhetorically engage with minoritized communities and vice versa."
