<Title>Asia and the Russia-Ukraine War Discussion March 15th 2:30pm</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><h3><span>March 15th 2:30-3:45 </span></h3><span><div><span><br></span></div>Together with the departments of History and Political Science, UMBC's Asian Studies Program presents an online conversation on the roles that two of Russia's Asian neighbors, China and India, occupy in the current conflict in Ukraine. </span><div><br></div><div>Dr. Brian Carlson is the head of the Global Security Team of the Think Tank at the Center for Security Studies (CSS), and a noted expert in Russia-China relations. <br><br>Dr. Brian Grodsky is a Professor and the Chair in UMBC's Political Science department. </div><div><br></div><div>Dr. Devin Hagerty is a Professor in UMBC's Political Science department, where he teaches courses on international relations, national security policy, and South Asian politics and international affairs. </div><div><br></div><div>Dr. Meredith Oyen, the director of UMBC's Asian Studies Program and an Associate Professor in the History department, is a specialist in the history of Sino-American relations.      Nadkarni is Associate Professor of English at the University of 
    Massachusetts Amherst. Her research and teaching interests include 
    postcolonial literature and theory, transnational feminist theory, US 
    empire studies, and Asian American studies, with an emphasis on the 
    literatures and cultures of the South Asian diaspora. Her book,</span><span> </span><em>Eugenic Feminism: Reproductive Nationalism in the United States and India</em><span> </span><span>(University
     of Minnesota Press, 2014), traces connections between U.S. and Indian 
    nationalist feminisms to suggest that both launch their claims to 
    feminist citizenship based on modernist constructions of the 
    reproductive body as the origin of the nation. She is working on a 
    second book project, tentatively titled</span><span> </span><em>From Opium to Outsourcing</em><span>, that focuses on representations of South Asian labor in a global context.</span></div>

    <div class="html-content"><blockquote><div><div>On March 15, several guest speakers will be coming to a special session of POLI 309: Chinese Politics to discuss the ongoing human rights emergency in China and the genocide occurring in the Xinjiang region. Guests will include:</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Zubayra Shamseden, Vice President of the World Uyghur Congress</strong></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong>Jennifer Zeng, author, former labor camp detainee<br></strong></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong>Yuwei Zhang, MD, PhD,</strong> <strong>activist, former re-education camp detainee</strong></div><div><br></div><div>The class begins at 7:20, and<strong> the guest-led discussion will start around 7:45.</strong> The class will be held entirely online, through Webex.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>The ConnectionCorps is a Center for Democracy and Civic Life initiative through which UMBC students learn to foster democratic participation and authentic connection among participants in the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's workshops and programs (e.g., Change Makers Dinner, Changing Maryland, and Dinner with Friends). ConnectionCorps facilitators participate in bi-weekly and ad-hoc training sessions to build community, develop skills, and prepare to facilitate.  </span></p><p><span>The overall time commitment is approximately 30 hours in each of the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. For specific dates, see the application.</span></p><p><span>ConnectionCorps facilitators receive a $400 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 096-08) on their transcripts for spring 2022. They also receive a graduation cord to recognize the contributions they have made to the education and growth of their peers. The Shriver Center coordinates PRAC 096-08 and the distribution of graduation cords.</span></p><p><span>All undergraduate students are invited to apply. <Title>Apply to be an Alternative Spring Break leader [paid]</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a six-day immersive learning experience organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life. ASB participants explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore. Each small group focuses on a specific topic, but the groups also consider overlaps among their issues. ASB groups work with community partners, elected officials, and scholars to identify pathways to long-term local engagement.</span></p><p><span>Past ASB groups have explored challenges and solutions relating to housing, access to nutritious food, education, and health care, criminal justice, and a variety of other issues in Baltimore. Applicants can choose to explore these topics or propose new ones.</span></p><p><span>Each leader works with a co-leader and as a member of a leadership team organized and trained by Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff during weekly meetings in the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. Together the leaders develop plans for a holistic, empowering ASB experience for all participants during the week of UMBC's Spring Break, March 19 - 24, 2023. </span></p><p><span>The overall time commitment is approximately 100 hours over the course of the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters.
