A message from Model UN Vice President Eli Sharp:
Hey all!
It's been a while! If you are on this email list, it is because you have expressed interest in Model UN in past semesters. I have some very time dependent updates on Model UN this semester (
the application deadline is this upcoming Sunday at 11:59pm), so I won't waste too many words saying I hope you had a good break and are successfully entering your spring semester here at UMBC! As a reminder, we love any and all skill levels in Model UN, and we are by no means an exclusively "Political Science" club, so please do not feel intimidated by the prospects of being on the team just because you are faithful to another major.
This semester, we hope to take a select delegation of you to a very special conference. Hosted by NMUN, this international conference will take place in New York City from April 10th-14th. During the conference, universities from around the world send thousands of young delegates to New York for the week in hopes that they successfully arrive at mock resolutions to the world's most pressing issues, as mediated by a simulation of various bodies of the United Nations. Spread over 5 days, these committee sessions will be complemented by lots of free time in NYC to (safely) roam, eat great food, and make new friends. The week will end with the conference renting out a club in Manhattan for the "delegate dance". Yes, it's fun, that's why I put it in bold.
In order to assess who we would like to bring to this conference to represent UMBC Model UN, we have created an
application for the team.
Everyone (including vets and e-board members)
who wishes to be considered for the team must fill this application out. If you have applied in the past, this application will look very similar.
This application is due SOON! This upcoming Sunday, February 5th, at 11:59pm, we will close the application acceptance window. We hope to have the team picked and notified of their status by 10pm on Monday, February 6th (the following day). If you do not receive an email by that time, you unfortunately did not make the team.
Full disclosure: these next couple weeks will be fast moving, with a few deadlines (including payment, which we estimate will be around $200, but we'll get to that soon) and meetings coming up fairly quickly. We are super excited to get started on what we're sure will be a great semester of MUN!

UPDATE: We Believe You Discussion Group Meeting Soon!!
Interested in attending? We want your opinion!
The We Believe You (WBY) discussion group is a space for survivors of gender- and power-based violence to build community among one another. This discussion-based program follows the Women’s Center Brave Space model to provide a welcoming environment and thoughtful community to engage in conversations focused on support and healing for survivors of sexual violence. This group centers the experiences of survivors and their allies, but all are welcome!
This semester, we are doing something a bit different... If you are interested in attending biweekly discussion group meetings (i.e. every other week), please sign-up below.
We will move forward with discussion groups only if we have at least 5 people sign up. Our myUMBC will be updated to reflect either the addition of meetings or a notice that WBY is on hiatus. UPDATE: We have received a lot of interest so rest assured we will be hosting We Believe You for the spring semester! Check out our events for the full calendar.
The deadline to sign up for WBY (Part 1) will be Thursday, February 9th!
Please note: you are free to attend/not attend the group whenever you'd like. Interest in the group and indication of preferred dates does not mean you are obligated to attend.
For the Spring 2023, we will be hosting a sign-up at the beginning of the semester and at the mid-point (around Spring Break).

Women's Center Spring '23 Hours, Services + Resources
Wherever you are the Women's Center is here for you!
Women's Center Spring 2023 Hours of Operation:
Beginning on the first day of classes, the Women's Center will resume our traditional in-person hours of operation and will welcome community members into our physical space.
Masks are not required to be in our space, but we appreciate you wearing them; masks are available at our front desk.
Our Spring Hours are:
Mondays through Thursdays: 9:30am - 5pm
Fridays: 10am - 3pm
While we are physically open, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714.
Individualized Support Meetings:
Women's Center professional staff are available for individual meetings and support which we can provide in-person or via phone or video chat. Drop by or to schedule an appointment, email womenscenter@umbc.edu or call 410-455-2714.

Welcome Dr. Ricky Blissett, Associate Director
We are thrilled to share that Ricky Blissett ’11 (he/they) has joined the Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff team as associate director. In their role, they develop and coordinate Center programs and initiatives, including holistic evaluation and strategic communication.
Ricky has served as a faculty member in educational leadership and policy at the University of Georgia, Seton Hall University, and Vanderbilt University; the coordinator for the Just Education Policy Institute; section chair for the Policy and Politics division of the American Educational Research Association; and principal investigator for the Democracy and Equity in Education Politics research group. They have also conducted and published research exploring citizen, activist, and policymaker ideologies in educational justice, democratic and equitable approaches to evaluation and methodology, and student advocacy and power. They received their Ph.D. in Leadership and Policy Studies at Vanderbilt University, and they are an alumnus of UMBC with a B.S. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. During their time as a UMBC student, Ricky was a participant in the first STRiVE leadership for social impact retreat in 2009, coordinator for an education service organization through the Shriver Center, and active member of UMBC’s Student Government Association both as director of academic affairs and executive vice president.
Outside of their work at UMBC, Ricky volunteers, manages a dog with a lot of opinions about her management, conducts independent research, and collects as many different varieties of mint plants as they can fit in their house.

Women's Center Lactation Room - Spring Reservations
Schedule Your Reservation for Spring 2023 Semester!
Moms and parents who plan on using the Women's Center lactation room, now officially named the Maxine Tracy Wellness Room, throughout the winter and spring semester are encouraged to sign up for their preferred reservation times. We are accepting reservations now.
To reserve your time, email
womenscenter@umbc.edu for access to our online reservation form. You can also stop by the Women's Center during our hours of operation to complete the form in person. All parents who reserve times will be added to the lactation room google calendar and a group email list in order to support communication and best navigate multiple people using the space.
While the Women's Center works diligently with parents to ensure access to the lactation room, we're also pleased to partner with the Library which now also hosts a lactation room.
AOK Library has a lactation room available on the 7th floor. The room includes a table, two chairs, an outlet and power strip, and sanitizing wipes.. It may be reserved for up to one hour, up to 7 days in advance. A key is also available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Check Out Desk on the Library's first floor. Reserve the Lactation Room for periods up to 1 hour.
We also have an additional lactation room available on the ground floor of the RAC (room 073). This room has a sink and chair. This room is first-come-first-serve. The Women’s Center oversees the operation of this room. If you experience any issues or have any concerns related to the space, please contact us.

Founded in 1989 at the University of Maryland, MSL has provided an invaluable education in civics and leadership to Maryland's students for more than three decades.
At MSL events, campus leaders hone their speech, debate, and political skills in a simulation of the Maryland General Assembly, gaining real-world experience working within the legislative process. They network with other young activists and aspiring policy wonks, learning skills that prepare them for careers in public service.
In addition to the legislative simulation, MSL brings political and civic leaders from all parts of Maryland to our events to speak with students and answer their questions. Governors, Lieutenant Governors, Attorneys General, Comptrollers, leaders of the House and Senate, members of Congress, Mayors, Councilmembers, and countless other local, state, and federal officials have participated in MSL events over the years.
MSL alumni have gone on to serve in the Maryland General Assembly, the Governor's Office, work in Congress and the Executive Branch, across federal agencies, and lead successful careers in law, politics, journalism, civil service, academia, and much more.

Transforming Mathematics Teacher Preparation
using the PrimeD Framework

The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar series continues in the Spring 2023 semester with Dr. Christopher Rakes. He will discuss a project that began with a longitudinal pilot study at UMBC and then expanded to a four-university collaborative partnership. Dr. Rakes will share how UMBC's secondary mathematics program changed as a new (PrimeD) framework was integrated into its structure, and how the new components fit into the existing secondary education program. He will also share evidence of how the program has improved teacher practice in the classroom following the integration of the framework.
All members of the department, partners/collaborators, and students/faculty from other departments are invited to attend. Lunch will be provided by the department.
