Staff Assistant, Rep.Kweisi Mfume
The Staff Assistant greets and screens visitors; responds to constituent requests for information; maintains handout literature regarding the district
and the House; hosts Capitol tours; and performs general administrative duties, including answering the telephone and answering constituent requests
for general information, tours, and other inquiries. This position also monitors delivery and pickup of materials, maintains the front office, and assists
with other various administrative and legislative duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
REQUIRED: Answers and screens telephone calls for the Member and other staff members and takes messages; Greets and screens visitors; Assists
persons who have appointments with the Member or the staff and works closely with the Member's Scheduler to ensure that the Member's
appointments are on time and that the Scheduler is aware of the visitor's arrival; Responds to constituent requests for flags, tours, and other
information; Maintains literature regarding the district and House offices for distribution to visitors; Manages recycling functions for the office; Orders supplies for the office; Signs for deliveries and forwards all materials delivered to the office to appropriate staff members in a timely manner; Maintains the office answering machine or voice mail; Ensures that requests for assistance are directed to the appropriate staff member in a timely manner; Documents visitor opinions, including full name, address, and all relevant information; Logs in mail; Tracks library books from the Library of Congress; Manage and maintain office supplies and common areas; Performs general administrative assignments; Sends, receives, and distributes materials; Maintains a good working relationship with the Member, staff, and constituents; Accepts performance-based criticism and direction; Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner; Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others; Meets attendance requirements as established by the office; Works well under pressure and handles stress; Works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends; and performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
At least 1 year of front office experience.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
Ability to use and troubleshoot photocopier, facsimile machine,
telephone, and other office equipment; Excellent organizational and proofreading skills; Ability to perform essential job functions above; Professional telephone manner; Ability to work cooperatively
and courteously with others; Knowledge of office policies, practices, and procedures; Knowledge of computer applications including high proficiency
in typing and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, and social media.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is mainly performed in an office environment. Noise levels are usually moderate; and Ability to work in a small workstation without an expectation of privacy. This position requires an incredible

Learn About the Future Leaders in Public Service Program
The Future Leaders in Public Service program is actively recruiting its summer 2023 cohort to join the departments of Commerce or Transportation as paid interns.
We're hosting two virtual information sessions to help you as you consider the Future Leaders in Public Service program. Register for one of the two sessions to hear from program staff and alumni about how you can explore a rewarding career in the federal government.

Date: Thursday, Oct. 6
Time: 5-6 p.m. ET
Date: Monday, Nov. 14
Time: 12-1 p.m. ET
Program Benefits
Selected participants in the program will receive:
- A 10-12 week summer internship at the Department of Commerce or the Department of Transportation.
- $4,000 to cover stipend and other expenses.
- Professional development sessions, including orientation and networking events throughout the summer.
Program Eligibility
To apply to the program, candidates must be:
- U.S. citizens at the time of application submission.
- Currently enrolled at an accredited educational institution in an undergraduate or graduate program. Undergraduates must be current second-year students/sophomores and above.
- Able to demonstrate superior academic achievement and have a GPA above 2.5.
- Interested in at least one of the following career tracks:
- Public Administration: May include positions in finance, human resources, management/administration, or similar fields.
- STEM and Innovation. May include positions in the fields of science and health, technology, engineering and math, potentially with a focus in entrepreneurship and innovation.
- Government Contracting and Acquisition. May include positions relating to federal contracting and acquisition, procurement, and business.
- Liberal Arts. May include positions in communications, arts, humanities, graphic design, public policy, writing/editing, communications, public affairs and social sciences.
Students admitted to the program must successfully complete a background check before beginning the internship in June 2023.

We are excited to inform you about our new initiative, the Undergraduate Politics & Law Journal at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
The journal is intended to provide undergraduate students with an outlet to explore legal and political issues and to work alongside faculty and student editors to publish articles. The journal experience is enriching at the undergraduate level and provides undergraduate students with an entry in their scholarly portfolio.
We are accepting submissions from undergraduate students writing on contemporary topics in politics and law. Submissions must be received no later than October 15, 2022. This is a great opportunity for students doing honors work, independent studies, or those who are getting ready for a senior thesis.

As statewide primaries continue through the summer, many Americans are beginning to think about which candidates they will support in the 2022 general election.
This decision-making process is fraught with difficulties, especially for inexperienced voters.
Voters must navigate angry, emotion-laden conversations about politics when trying to sort out whom to vote for. Americans are more likely than ever to view politics in moral terms, meaning their political conversations sometimes feel like epic battles between good and evil.
But political conversations are also shaped by, obviously, what Americans know - and, less obviously, what they think they know - about politics.

Apply for University System of Maryland Student Regent
Represent 170,000+ students on the system's governing board
The University System of Maryland encompasses 12 institutions, including UMBC, and three regional higher education centers. It employs more than 16,000 faculty members and 25,000 staff members, and owns almost 1,000 buildings. Its annual operating budget is more than $5 billion. There are more than 170,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at its various institutions.
How would you like to represent all of those students as a member of the
Board of Regents, the system's governing body?
Please take a look at this
description of the Student Regent position and consider applying. Please also pass the information along to friends who may be interested. The Student Regent will serve from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2025, including as the voting Student Regent in 2024-2025. All applicants should be planning to graduate in spring 2025 or later.
The application deadline is Friday, November 4 at 5 p.m.

This fall, the Symposium will explore the regional and pervasive impact of prison incarceration and the current debate around prison abolition. Specifically, we would like to engage in the conversation about prison abolition, reform, youth incarnation, cumulative trauma, rights of formerly incarcerated citizens, etc.
The inspiration for the theme is the Library's Special Collections' prison incarceration collection and the Library Gallery exhibit being hosted, called Prison Nation, simultaneously in Fall 2022.
