UMBC Winter Semester Registration Opens 10/17 Winter Classes are a Great Way to Get Ahead

Winter session helps you stay on track to graduate on time, especially if you can't take 15 credits during the spring and fall semesters. Most winter session courses meet degree requirements or are general education (GEP) courses required for all majors.

Use myUMBC to register for up to 4.5 credits. If you would like to take more than 4.5 credits, submit an Excess Credit Permission Form to the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising for review.

On Friday at 1 pm, we are holding a virtual panel covering the Iranian protests in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody. We will look at this through a historical and cultural lens. During the panel, we will also hold space for the personal stories of Iranian women students from our campus, including Public Policy's own Shadi Khabbaz, who was the driving force of this panel! 

Panelists include Dr. Noor Zaidi from our History Department and award-winning, Iranian-American journalist Negar Mortazavi. She also hosts the Iran podcast, which can be found here. Our moderator is Dr. Mejdulene Shomali from Gender, Women's, + Sexuality Studies at UMBC.

The Maryland Board of Elections has placed an official ballot dropoff box in the lobby of The Commons, meaning that Maryland voters can now cast their votes on campus. You will need to be registered and request a mail-in ballot, which you can place in the box after you have completed it. Thanks to our partners in Campus Life and the Division of Information Technology for making this placement possible, and to SGA, GSA, RSA, the President's Office, and other campus leaders who joined us in working with the Board of Elections to get it done.

As of this posting, UMBC is #6 in the United States in the number of pledges to vote made by students through ALL IN to Vote's Pledge to Vote competition. Faculty, staff, and students can take the pledge; student pledges count toward UMBC's total on the national leaderboard

Applications are now open for teams of CAHSS faculty to apply to work with Hanover Research professionals!


CAHSS is continuing our partnership with Hanover Research, a grant development and research firm that helps faculty strengthen competitive external proposals to federal agencies and private and non-profit foundations. Teams of CAHSS faculty may apply for the opportunity to work directly with Hanover professionals. 

 

A second round of applications is now open for faculty who intend to submit an external proposal later in Fall 2022 or in spring/early summer 2023.

For more information about the process and the resources that Hanover provides, faculty are encouraged to view this webinar featuring CAHSS PIs who worked with Hanover this past year.  Please direct any questions to Christine Mallinson (mallinson@umbc.edu), Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship.  

 

Selection Criteria: 

  • Preference will be given to teams that aim to submit larger, collaborative and/or interdisciplinary proposals to federal agencies (e.g., NSF, NIH) or to foundations. 

  • Each team must have at least one CAHSS tenured/tenure track faculty member. 

  • Faculty with prior collaborative grant experience who are looking to scale up their research are especially encouraged to apply.
