The UMBC Review: Journal of Undergraduate Research is currently soliciting submissions for its 25th edition to be published in April 2024. We invite you to submit your research to our journal. The Review offers a rewarding opportunity to get your undergraduate research published!
The deadline to submit is Friday, September 15th. The submission application can be found at: https://ur.umbc.edu/umbc-review/. Click "Submit Paper Here!" We encourage students of all majors and disciplines to send in their research! Your papers do not have to be ready for publication or perfect right now, we just want to see the best work and research you have completed! Papers may include original research and/or artistic statements that explore the research and process you have completed, and discoveries you have made.

Please make sure to apply for our Fall conference team (applications for the Spring Team will be available in December) as soon as possible! Applications close Friday, September 15th. We will be attending NMUN DC from November 10th-12th, 2023. Should you apply and get accepted to the team, you will be obligated to attend one 1-hour meeting per week, the day/time of which is decided based on the team's collective availability, until we attend the conference. Should you choose, you may be registered for the 1-credit, upper level Political Science elective course, POLI384L.
A brief overview of Model UN and our semester timeline as a team is available in the description of the team application, hyper-linked above. Applications will be closed after 11:59pm, September 15th (that's next Friday!). We will notify you of your status by 10pm, Monday, September 18th.

Apply for the Discover AI Program!
Learn about emerging technology; Apply by September 18th
APPLY HERE by September 18 -- no program cost or fees
UMBC and nonprofit AI4ALL have partnered to offer undergraduate students in any major the opportunity to apply to the Discover AI program, which will take place during the Fall 2023 semester. Programming experience is not required. The ten-week program starts on September 29 and includes synchronous meetings on Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and asynchronous instruction. No UMBC course credit will be given for participating in the program. You must apply online by September 18, 2023.
Discover AI is a virtual project-based program in partnership with UMBC that offers a hands-on introduction to computer science and artificial intelligence (AI), ethical issues surrounding AI implementation, and tech careers. In Discover AI, students work in groups on an AI/Machine Learning project based on real-life applications of AI that the students find curious.
Upon completion, participants receive an AI4ALL Discover AI certificate of completion and the opportunity to opt-in to Spring 2024's AI4ALL Ignite - a virtual accelerator that offers Undergraduate students the chance to work on an AI portfolio project with mentorship from AI industry experts. The accelerator also helps participants gain skills to set them apart in the AI internship application process.

Hill, former UMBC Associate Provost & Founding UMBC McNair Director, and Thomas Robinson, PhD., Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and McNair Research Methods Faculty for over 30 years.
A Love Supreme: The (Rhetorical) Legacy of John Coltrane
Earl Brooks, Assistant Professor, English, UMBC
Jazz musician John Coltrane's oeuvre, including his iconic album A Love Supreme, represented a synthesis of competing discourses and sensibilities in Black America: that of moderate integrationists of the Civil Rights Movement and the emerging concerns of countercultural Afrocentrism. In this concert/talk, I argue that such syntheses propelled Coltrane's larger status as a cultural symbol of Black innovation and aesthetics through his role as a purveyor of epistemic sonic schema-a body of sonic material that produces knowledge-as an aural analog to theorist Kenneth Burke's critical practice of "perspective by incongruity" as well as the communication of doubled meanings associated with African American rhetorical traditions popularly known as signifying.
