RTSS Ep 47: Constitution Day 2023
with Del. Mark S. Chang (UMBC '99)
On this episode we hear a rebroadcast of the 2023 UMBC Constitution Day Lecture, organized by the Department of Political Science and cosponsored by UMBC's Center for Social Science Scholarship.
The lecture, which took place in September of 2023, was given by keynote speaker Delegate Mark S. Chang. Delegate Chang has represented the 32nd District in the Maryland House of Delegates (Anne Arundel County) since 2015, and also serves as the Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee, among a variety of other vital committee positions in our state legislature. Delegate Chang received a B.A. in Psychology from UMBC in 1999, making him a proud UMBC social science alumnus!

The Office of Provost’s Interdisciplinary Activities Advisory Committee, in collaboration with the Dresher Center for the Humanities and the Office of Summer, Winter, and Special Programs invites applications for the UMBC Interdisciplinary CoLab.
What is a CoLab?
Lead students in the creation of interdisciplinary narrative research based
products for community partners or to support your research portfolio
Promote collaboration, tell effective stories, and amplify voices to the general
public.
Ideal Proposals:
- Have a strong focus that can be explored effectively over a four week period.
- Utilize diverse research methods and humanities modes of analysis.
- Produce public-facing final projects created for community partners or individual research efforts.
- Examples include developing websites, promotional materials, field guides, and podcasts.
- Faculty and staff are encouraged to propose projects for themselves to lead, or we can help with locating a project leader.

Workshop Series | Beyond the Eyes: Embodied Methodologies
into an Environmental Image with Maya Quilolo
October 16 -19, noon - 1pm, PAHB 105
Maya Quilolo is a visiting scholar from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil who investigates and explores the intersections between art, anthropology, and black and indigenous cosmologies through film, photography, drawing, performance, literature, and sculpture.
She is offering a 4-day workshop series during the noon free-hour for four concurrent days beginning on October 16th and ending on October 19th. Come to as many days as you wish.

This workshop is part of the Black in the Americas series hosted by the Language, Literacy, and Culture Program with support from the Dresher Center for the Humanities; the Center for Social Science Scholarship; the Center for Innovation, Research, and Creativity in the Arts; the departments of Gender, Women’s + Sexuality Studies; Global Studies; Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication; Political Science; and Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health.

Every spring, UMBC's Department of Political Science sponsors students to serve as interns for the Maryland General Assembly, a part of Maryland's legislature that meets from January through April. Students who are interested in politics, policy, and public administration are strongly encouraged to apply to be a Maryland General Assembly intern for the 2024 session.

& Non-Profit Careers: An Alumni Panel
Research is about solving real world problems. The skills you learn while writing a research paper or taking a research methods course are valued in careers in government, business, and the non-profit industry. Join us to learn how UMBC alumni are using social science research to support government and business clients. The panel will be moderated by CS3's Associate Director,
Dr. Felipe Filomeno, and will be followed by networking and refreshments.

Scott Whittier has been a lawyer for 30 years (and he teaches in UMBC's Department of Information Systems). He is a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, and has practiced law in a variety of contexts: at a big D.C. law firm, in-house at a large corporation and now at the World Wildlife Fund, and he even was a college professor for a couple of years. He will have a conversation with us, hearing your thoughts and questions about law school, your legal career, etc., and sharing ideas about charting your career path and finding your place in the law.
