Women's Center Holiday and Finals Hours
Please plan accordingly!
Please note the change in hours the Women's Center space will be available to the UMBC community over the next several weeks due to holiday, finals, and winter break. This shift in hours allows our student staff to spend time with their families over the holidays and to study for finals. Please plan accordingly and thank you for your flexibility.

Thanksgiving Holiday Hours:
Wednesday, November 27th: 9am-4pm
Thursday, November 28th: Closed
Friday, November 29th: Closed
Study Day/Finals Hours
Wednesday, December 11th (Study Day): 9am-5pm
Thursday, December 12th: 9am-5pm
Friday, December 13th: 9am-5pm
Monday, December 16th to Wednesday, December 18th: 9am-5pm
Thursday, December 19th: 10am-3pm
Friday, December 20th: 10am-3pm
Will will be closed on Monday, December 23rd.
The Women's Center will re-open to the community on Thursday, January 2nd. Our winter term hours will be Monday-Friday from 10am to 3pm. Our regular semester hours will begin again on the first day of the spring semester on Monday, January 27, 2014.
The University is closed December 24th-January 1st. The Women's Center will also be closed during this time.

Transgender Day of Remembrance
To memorialize those killed due to anti-transgender hatred.
Join the Women’s Center at UMBC and Student Life’s Mosaic Center in memorializing transgender people who have lost their lives due to hatred. We observe this day with a slide show sharing the pictures and names of those who have been lost.
You are also invited to visit the Women’s Center on Wednesday, November 20th to view the slideshow and reflect on these lives.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.
Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.
We live in times more sensitive than ever to hatred based violence, especially since the events of September 11th. Yet even now, the deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives. This trend shows no sign of abating.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence.

The Model African Union provides a unique opportunity to college
students to study the role, structure, and performance of the 54
nation-state African Union through simulations augmented by briefings at African Embassies in Washington, D.C.
The MAU demonstrates the patterns of cooperation and conflict that characterize intra-African diplomacy in search for solutions to continental issues. The 2014 MAU will be at Howard University, February 20 – 23, 2014.
UMBC will represent the nation of Swaziland!!!! Preparation is going
on right now.
The UMBC Delegation to the National Model African Union is coordinated by the Department of Africana Studies and the Department of Political Science.

you in terms of valuable experience and learning opportunities! Regardless of
