<Title>COVID-19 Politics and Policy Speaker Series - FL20</Title>
<Tagline>Presented by the Department of Political Science</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>This Fall the nation
    will continue to confront the implications of the severe acute respiratory syndrome
    coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) which leads to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).<span>  </span>This speaker series will feature experts in
    politics and policy who will describe the implications of COVID-19 on</span></p><ul><li><span>Why do states and
    localities differ in their responses to COVID-19?</span></li><li><span>What role does intergovernmental
    relations play in the politics of this issue?</span></li><li><span>How does media and information
    impact these political decisions?</span></li><li><span>How should we
    evaluate the responses by governments and on what outcomes (public health, economics,
    etc.)?</span></li><li><span>What impact will this

Given the challenging events of 2020 thus far, many are struggling to find time and space to devote to research-related writing this fall.</span></span></span><br><br><span><span><span>These ongoing research writing support groups will help you make time for writing and reflection and find a group of like-minded writers who can help you keep the momentum going while creating accountability and building community! As one of our participants from this past summer’s research writing bootcamp shared, it is a “gentle, recurring tap that reminds me to turn to my research for a few hours every week.</span></span></span><br><br><span><span><span>The support groups will meet via WebEx weekly at a mutually convenient time for approximately an hour of small group, cohort-based discussion of the writing process and shared reflection on your own writing. She has taken on a leadership role at the National Science Foundation to promote the establishment of a new social science funding mechanism that supports evidence?based research on the Science of Broadening Participation.     <div class="html-content"><span>In the 2020 general election, Maryland voters will have the option to cast their ballots either by mail or in person. The Maryland State Board of Elections (SBE) is looking for students to serve as election judges to staff polling stations in November. Election judges work as a team to ensure that Marylanders are able to access polling stations and cast a fair vote without undue delay or interference. The title of her research project is “Building a Nation: How National Service Requirements Affect Patriotic Sentiment”. Her research will investigate whether countries with mandatory military or civil service requirements for young adults also have higher levels of patriotism throughout the country. <Title>Dresher Center Rapid Response Awards</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><strong>Dresher Center Rapid Response Awards</strong><br>
    
    <br><strong>Purpose</strong><br>
    
    <br>Dresher Center Rapid Response
    awards offer <strong>small</strong> grants of up to $1,500 to UMBC faculty (full- and
    part-time) and graduate students whose humanities-oriented research has been
    delayed or disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel ban. The awards
    may also be used by faculty who wish to shift their research <span>to
    focus on humanities questions surrounding the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
    or undertake new work in the humanistic study of social justice. </span><br>
    
    <br>The funds are meant to provide
    support for current UMBC researchers who require additional funding to adapt to
    new research circumstances, interests, and opportunities, and are unable to
    access other funds for this purpose. <br>
    
    <br>Some examples of use of funds include:<br>
    
    <ul><li><p>Hiring a research assistant in
    the Baltimore region or elsewhere;</p></li><li><p>Purchasing necessary software
    or hardware upgrades;</p></li><li><p>
    
    Purchasing research materials
    (e.g., books, photocopies, materials provided by archives, transcription services
    or interview devices);</p></li><li><p>
    
    Small honoraria for external
    research partners; small faculty development funds for UMBC research partners;</p></li><li><p>
    
    Travel (if and when the
    “non-essential” travel ban is lifted).<br></p></li></ul>
    
    
    <br><strong>Application Guidelines</strong><div><p><br>A complete application will include
    the following:</p></div><ul><li><p>
    
    A brief narrative statement (300 words max) describing
    your research, its humanities and social justice (if appropriate) focus, and
    its significance, your revised or re-adapted research goals, and how you will
    use the funding </p></li><li><p>
    
    A short, summary budget</p></li><li><p>
    
    A two-page CV</p></li></ul>

    will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout fall 2020, beginning on August
