The Comeback of Our [Virtual] Community Whiteboard!

<Tagline>Do you miss the Question of the Week like we do?</Tagline>

TL;DR: The Women's Center is bringing back our whiteboard Question of the Week... but online!

If, in the past year, you were one of the lucky people who were able to hang out and call the Women's Center lounge your home, then you might remember one of our signature mainstays: the community whiteboard.

A humble hand-me-down from the Retriever Learning Center that stood on one leg and was supported by a milk crate on the other end, our community whiteboard was not only a place for us to take notes or doodle when we were bored. It was also one of the ways we built community. Every week, a new question or set of choose your own adventure scenarios or a ranking challenge or a "this or that" would be on the whiteboard. Women's Center community members would stop by to tell us whether or not they were a Coke or a Pepsi person, a Libra, or what sort of super power they would want to have. Every week, we were able to learn something new and fun about our community, and we had a way to easily begin conversations... so what's stopping us from bringing it back (other than a pandemic)?

Nothing! During this next semester, we are test driving a new virtual community whiteboard! It might not have the same charm as the lounge whiteboard, but we can still make this a space to build community and connect.

So, for our first question of the week...

What do you want to see and/or what questions do you want answered on our virtual community whiteboard?

Announcing 2020-2021 CS3 Faculty Working Groups

<Tagline>Open to new members!</Tagline>

Each of these collaborative scholarly learning communities is
currently accepting new members, open to faculty and advanced graduate
    students.

New! “Ethnography at a
    Distance”

Ethnography typically relies on face-to-face interaction. However,
during this time of social distancing, the participant-observation and
interview methods that ethnographers employ cannot be carried out as usual.
This working group will draw faculty from across campus to discuss ways to
continue our own ethnographic research and to coach our students in theirs.

This Faculty Working Group will meet virtually throughout the year
to share resources, develop strategies, and support each other’s ethnographic
research and teaching in this challenging time. As a group, we will determine
if there are any outside resources we want to draw in and whether there may be
products from our work that we want to share with the larger campus or
scholarly communities, or perhaps with the general public. The establishment of this working group will
help support ongoing faculty research and the university’s long term
commitment to community engaged research, complementing emerging efforts to
support teaching from a distance at this critical period. Contact
    facilitator Bambi Chapin (Sociology,
Anthropology, and Public Health) for more information.

New! “Women’s Research
    Writing Group”

In light of the expected downturn of women’s research
productivity during the Covid-19 crisis, this Faculty Working Group aims
to provide dedicated research time to women-identified faculty and staff who
engage in qualitative research and who are looking for support and space
to work. Members will work remotely, meeting for larger sessions
where we ask questions of each other and check in, while also setting up
accountability partners and goal setting documents.

Contact

    College) and Ana Oskoz (Modern
Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication) for more information.

“Housing and Inequality
    in Mobtown”

This continuing Faculty Working Group connects scholars who are
working on inequality and housing. The group will provide a space in which
members can share ideas and learn from each other while also discussing
strategies to ensure that research is wanted by, and relevant to, those most
negatively affected by housing inequalities. The group will discuss
research and writing, host working meetings with housing activists in
Baltimore, and collaborate on an article for Radical Housing Journal,
a new journal jointly produced by academics and activists. Contact

“Educational Research
    and Writing Group”

This continuing Faculty Working Group meets regularly to support
members’ educational research and writing endeavors in addition to fostering
intellectual and academic conversations related to education research across
    campus. Contact

This continuing Faculty Working Group meets regularly to support
and advance new and existing research-based initiatives and community
partnerships to address the critical issue of violence prevention, particularly
in relation to Baltimore and throughout Maryland. Contact

This session follows the momentum started in the first two Anti-Racism and Action sessions held on June 12 and July 24.

The focus of this session will be a conversation about Health Disparities and COVID-19. COVID-19 is yet another phenomenon where people experience tragic neglect and mistreatment that reveal structural inequities caused by racist systems. In this Drop-In Session we will discuss research efforts by faculty to help policymakers and other stakeholders see how the dynamics of a racialized society produce such deleterious effects. In addition to specific projects, we will orient discussion toward further defining the unique and critical role university-based research can have in meeting the challenges or the pandemic.

Please register here for this event and submit your questions, resources, or goals for action that you would like to see addressed in the session.
