Reflections on STRiVE 2025: Learning to Lead for Public Purpose
January 13 – 17, 2025
STRiVE 2025 took place from Monday, January 13 - Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, MD. 47 UMBC undergraduate students spent five days strengthening their talents, learning to live by their values, and exploring how to deepen UMBC’s culture of mattering and belonging. The program positioned them to be co-creators of a UMBC community in which everyone can thrive.

During STRiVE, guests from UMBC visited Skycroft to meet with groups of participants exploring specific issues affecting members of the UMBC community. The guests ("stakeholders") helped participants consider how they could contribute to addressing those issues in the semester(s) ahead. The stakeholders were:

Ciara Christian and Ricky Blissett visited STRiVE 2025 at other points during the week to co-facilitate sessions with some of the STRiVE 2025 coaches. James DeVita, Ph.D. (Division of Student Affairs) visited STRiVE to share some inspiration with the participants.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who served as coaches, stakeholders, and guests, as well as to Kelly Birch, Lan Le ’21, and the entire commonvision staff team for their flexibility, patience, and incredible support with the behind-the-scenes preparation for STRiVE.
STRiVE is hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life with support from the Student Government Association and PNC Bank. Since 2009, over 900 UMBC students have participated in the program and have gone on to make meaningful change on campus and beyond.

Call for Applications: CS3 Associate Director
Reminder: applications are due February 14, 2025
The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) seeks an Associate Director to work closely with the Director and the Center team to shape and implement CS3 events, programs, and budget. The Associate Director will assist the Director in strategic decision making, shaping CS3 goals, and developing CS3 initiatives. The Associate Director will also be responsible for serving in the Director’s place should the Director be unable to attend various CS3 activities or programs, or at university events or meetings.
The appointment would begin July 1, 2025.
Duties for the Associate Director include:
Work with the Center Director and Coordinator to schedule, coordinate, facilitate, and attend CS3 events, trainings, and workshops, including organizing the biennial Social Science Faculty Publications celebration, the annual Social Science Alumni Panel, and the Social Sciences Forum Distinguished Lecture series.
Review applications for CS3 faculty summer fellowships and small research grants to support Center award decisions.
Review applications and reports of interdisciplinary CS3 faculty working groups and research hubs.
Work with the Center Director, Coordinator, and CS3 Advisory Board to plan, develop, and implement other CS3 programming for students and faculty as needed.
Attend bi-weekly staff meetings and monthly board meetings, participate in strategic planning and budgeting.
Attend monthly CAHSS chairs and directors’ meetings in the Director’s place as needed.
Assist in evaluating CS3 activities and writing the Center’s annual report.
Eligibility: Tenure track faculty with expertise in social science fields (minimum: advanced assistant professor; tenured preferred). Preference will be given to applicants who have been formally involved with CS3, such as service on the CS3 Advisory Board or participation in other Center programs or initiatives.
Compensation for this 3-year appointment includes an annual 2-course reduction and a $5K annual stipend.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Present your research through the Political Science Department at UMBC!
CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Present your Undergraduate Research at the 14th Annual UMBC Pi Sigma Alpha Research Conference!
Dear Political Science Students,
We are set to hold our 14th undergraduate research conference for political science students on Wednesday, April 9nd, 2025 from 11am to 1pm! All students who have written a strong research-oriented paper for any political science course or independent study are welcome to apply. Please note that it is not necessary for a student to be a member of Pi Sigma Alpha in order to participate.
Conference presenters ususually present research that they have completed as a
poster that they display on an easel to their visitors. Posters are made in
Microsoft's Powerpoint. Normally, visitors study the poster for a few minutes and then interact with you about your work. It's a wonderful opportunity for you to disseminate your research and discuss your ideas to a larger audience. In addition, students often use this conference to prepare for their presentations at URCAD (Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day), which will take place one week later on April 16th. (Note that the due date
to submit a proposal to URCAD is February 14th.)
Attached are a few photos from previous conferences to give you an idea of what the conference would look like. In the pictures, you can see an example of a poster; also look at
URCAD's website to see additional examples and general advice (click on poster presentations).
The UMBC Omicron Eta Pi Sigma Alpha group has received funding from the national organization of Pi Sigma Alpha to cover the costs associated with your participation in the conference, including the printing and mounting of your poster on a posterboard and lunch the day of the conference. Once we know who is participating, we will distribute information about how to make a poster in Powerpoint and, if there is enough interest, we will also hold a workshop on Monday, March 17th during the free hour.
Please consider participating if you have a strong paper from a class or other research experience that you would like to present! It's a wonderful experience for everyone - for presenters and visitors alike. Also, please feel free to reach out to Professor Forestiere

For the spring semester, three fellows will join us in the Dresher Center.
Lindsay DiCuirci, Associate Professor in English, will work on an interdisciplinary study of the relationship between spiritualism, print culture and attempts at radical social reform between 1840 and 1870. DiCuirci is interested in moments of cooperation between spiritualists and reformist groups, but as my use of “phantasms” conveys, the dream of harmonia was often disrupted by entrenched biases that even a movement committed to egalitarianism could not shed.
Meredith Oyen, Associate Professor in History, is studying the history of U.S. and China diplomatic relations. The current relationship is presently very tense due to changing leadership in both nations, alongside the pandemic, a trade war, and the perennial issue of Taiwan. Her book project offers a new narrative that highlights person-to-person contact as much as high level diplomacy, centering primary sources to give insight into both countries’ perspectives.
Kristin Kelly, a Ph.D. candidate in Language, Literacy, and Culture, is conducting a research project that aims to understand how Black women educators and Black girls collaborate, drawing on their spirituality and imagination to inform the ways they understand and navigate oppressive and harmful systems. Kelly also aims to uncover how Black women mentors help Black girls reimagine education and their futures, especially in classrooms that often do not represent their experiences but center on Eurocentric ways of teaching and exhibit gender inequality.

Professional Development Opportunities from NEH
The NEH Division of Education supports professional development programs for K-12 educators, higher education faculty, and humanities professionals to study a variety of humanities topics. Programs are offered in residential, virtual, and combined formats. Participant stipends are based upon program format and duration.
Institutes are one to four-week professional development programs that convene K-12 educators or higher education faculty from across the nation to deepen their understanding of significant topics in the humanities and enrich their capacity for effective scholarship and teaching.
Landmarks of American History and Culture programs are one-week workshops held across the nation that enhance how K-12 educators, higher education faculty, and humanities professionals incorporate place-based approaches to humanities teaching and scholarship.

Faculty Writing Group
sign up by January 30th!
The writing group is an opportunity for faculty to be grouped with a few people from across disciplines at UMBC to network and hold ourselves accountable to writing during the academic year. Groups will work together to identify a time to meet and set their own expectations.
The recommendation is to meet 1-2 hours per week, or every other week depending on the group's interest. Most groups do a check in and talk about their projects/week for about 15 minutes then spend the bulk of the time writing independently, then about 5 minutes to report out at the end.
The Korean Wave and Language Learning in the Digital Wilds

The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar continues in Spring 2025 with a presentation by Professor Shannon Sauro. Her talk reports on the findings of a scoping review of research on fans of Korean popular media (e.g. K-pop, K-dramas) to explore what fan practices they engage in to learn Korean language and culture in the digital wilds.
All members of the department, partners/collaborators, and students/faculty from other departments and institutions are invited to attend. Lunch will be provided by the department.
