Reminder: CAHSS Faculty Media Training
There are just a few days left to register for the CAHSS Faculty Media Training which will take place on Friday, October 1 at 10am.

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences' Office of the Dean and the Office of Institutional Advancement will be hosting a virtual media workshop for faculty. The workshop will provide tips, strategies, and tools to help faculty learn and become more comfortable sharing their research with media.

Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences

NSF supports infrastructure-focused research projects grounded in behavioral and social science

The U.S. National Science Foundation is supporting more than 20 exploratory research projects examining the interactions of people and society with physical and digital infrastructure. Through NSF’s Strengthening American Infrastructure initiative, researchers will investigate a variety of areas — from bridges and electrical grids to online education — with the shared goal of producing fundamental scientific knowledge that can be used to make current and future infrastructure safer, smarter and more cost effective.

I want to personally invite students to the Political Science Council of Majors' (advised by Dr. Tom Schaller) first semesterly, All-Majors Interest Meeting being hosted on Wednesday, September 29th from 11-12 AM in PUP 354. This will be the Council's in-person meeting after 2 years!! The event will be an opportunity to introduce students to the Council, provide departmental resources, engage students with other POLI students, and brainstorm civic initiatives for the year.


The UMBC Political Science Council of Majors aids the Political Science department to address the needs of undergraduate students, build an inclusive community of scholars, and enhance the cultural life of all undergraduates in the department. The Council works directly with department faculty and professors to create avenues of interest for the student body and strives to aid students to succeed both within the realm of Political Science and the larger UMBC community. Moreover, we are working to strengthen civic engagement, access to resources and opportunities, and addressing any departmental issues that may arise.


Past achievements of the Council:

-Student Voting Registration, Know-your-Reps, and Civic Engagement

-POLI Senior Graduation Ceremonies led by Dr. Carolyn Forestiere

-Panel on Biden's Foreign Policy sponsored by both POLI and Global Studies 

-Diversification of Department curriculums and syllabi led by Dr. Carolyn Forestiere

-Representing the POLI department

“How can I join the Women’s Center?”

Well . . .

Do you hang out in our lounge? Do you come to our events? Do you read our blog or chat with our staff? 

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then congratulations! You are a part of the Women’s Center.

But we understand the feeling of being a part of something special. Showing your loyalty and commitment to a cause is empowering. Finding home and belonging in a space that means something to you, means something to us.

So, now, you can “join” the Women’s Center by being one of our fearless and loyal Scouts!

The Women’s Center Scouts program began several years ago in the spirit of the Pawnee Goddesses created by our friend Leslie Knope. Maybe you’ve also heard of the Girl Scouts? Radical Monarchs? Or Lumberjanes? Our Scouts program is kind of like that. Nonetheless, there are Women’s Center badges out there waiting to be earned!

Here’s the deal. To become a Women’s Center Scout, participate in our “This or That Scout Challenge!” Each Scout must meet the challenge by completing a set of 4 different challenges outlined by the Women’s Center throughout the fall semester. The challenges include:  

Any UMBC community member who completes the challenge by December 1st gets a Women’s Center T-shirt and a shout-out on our social media pages!

The UMBC Review: Journal of Undergraduate Research is currently soliciting submissions for its 23rd volume to be published in April 2022. 


We invite you to submit your research to our journal. The Review offers a rewarding opportunity to get your undergraduate research published!


The submission application can be found at: https://ur.umbc.edu/umbc-review/. Click “Submit Here!” We encourage students of all majors and disciplines to send in their research! Your papers do not have to be ready for publication or perfect right now, we just want to see the best work and research you have completed! Papers may include original research and/or artistic statements that explore the research and process you have completed, and discoveries you have made.

Take part in the first event of Critical Social Justice 2021-2022 and learn more about the disability justice movement. In this virtual event, we will learn about the history of disability rights in the US, the fundamental principles of disability justice, where the movement is today, and what disability justice looks like/can look like at UMBC. Regardless of your knowledge level or experience level, all are welcome to join in on this introductory conversation.

Women's Center Fall 2021 Adjusted Hours of Operation:

Beginning Sept 27th, the Women's Center hours of operation will be adjusted to: 
Mondays through Thursdays: 10am - 5:30pm
Fridays: 10am - 4pm

In order to maintain physical distancing, the lounge space will be operating at 50% capacity. Masks are required to be in our space. 
Our usual plates/mugs/utensils will not be available so please bring your own if you plan on drinking or eating in the space.

As a reminder, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714.

We seek applications from students of underrepresented groups of all kinds, including first-generation college students. 


The Emerging Scholars Conference enables undergraduate students to discuss their research -- whether completed or in progress -- in a scholarly (but low-pressure) setting that exposes them to the world of academic exchange at a professional level. Past conferences have been successful events, as students presented on a wide range of topics and methods that reflect early forays into original social science scholarship. 


Since circumstances do not permit an in-person event this year, we will host a virtual conference with multiple sessions over a day and a half later this fall (Nov. 18-19, 2021). Invited scholars will participate in panels to discuss their research and will receive constructive feedback from faculty and graduate student discussants, as well as other audience members. In other sessions, students will receive advice on applying to Ph.D. programs and have the chance to talk with current students about life in graduate school. 


Applications aredueFriday, October 8 at 2pm EST. We request the following materials: 


(1) completion of the brief online application form, including a brief statement on how the applicant would bring novel or underrepresented perspectives to political science; 

(2) a transcript (an unofficial copy is fine); 

(3) title and abstract of the research project the student plans to discuss; 

(4) a brief writing sample; and

(5) a letter of endorsement from the student’s faculty advisor that speaks both to the student’s promise for doctoral study and how the student will strengthen the diversity of the field. This letter may be submitted separately via email to psgradinfo@umich.edu.


Students should first complete the brief online form (https://forms.gle/vYcrQxei4qRVHnVT9), which will offer an opportunity to upload the other materials. Materials may also be submitted via email (psgradinfo@umich.edu) with the subject heading “Emerging Scholars.” If they wish, students may also include a current resume or curriculum vitae.
