    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a six-day immersive learning experience in which participants explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore. Participants build connections with local leaders, organizations, and policy makers and develop a sophisticated understanding of available resources and challenges. The program helps participants identify pathways to long-term community engagement. </span></p><p><span>ASB 2022 groups will focus on:</span></p><ul><li><span>Immigrant Health Equity (led by Dominique Henriques Melo and Mokeira Nyakoe)</span></li><li>K-12 Educational Equity (led by Diane Stonestreet and Polina Kassir)</li><li>Transformative Justice (led by Mulan Bell and Wendy Zhang)</li></ul><p><span>ASB 2022 will take place from March 20-25, 2022.     <div class="html-content"><div><p><span><strong>NSF Mid-Career Advancement (MCA)</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>Full Proposal Due Date: February 7, 2022</strong></span></p><p><span>An academic career often does not provide the uninterrupted stretches of time necessary for acquiring and building new skills to enhance and advance one’s research program. Mid-career scientists in particular are at a critical career stage where they need to advance their research programs to ensure long-term productivity and creativity but are often constrained by service, teaching, or other activities that limit the amount of time devoted to research. </span></p><p><span>The MCA offers an opportunity for scientists and engineers at the Associate Professor rank (or equivalent) to substantively enhance and advance their research program through synergistic and mutually beneficial partnerships, typically at an institution other than their home institution. <span>Projects that envision new insights on existing problems or identify new but related problems previously inaccessible without new methodology or expertise from other fields are encouraged</span><span>.</span></span></p><p>Partners from outside the PI's own subdiscipline or discipline are encouraged, but not required, to enhance interdisciplinary networking and convergence across science and engineering fields.</p><p>By (re)-investing in mid-career investigators, NSF aims to enable and grow a more diverse scientific workforce (more women, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented minorities) at high academic ranks, who <span>remain engaged and active in cutting-edge research</span>.</p><p><em>The MCA is the only cross-directorate NSF program specifically aimed at providing protected time and resources to established scientists and engineers targeted at the mid-career (Associate Professor rank or equivalent) stage. Participating programs in the Directorates for Biological Sciences (BIO), Geosciences (GEO), Engineering (ENG), Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE), and Education and Human Resources (EHR) will accept MCA proposals. PIs are encouraged to discuss the suitability of their MCA proposal with a program officer from the appropriate directorate (see <a title="https://www.nsf.gov/bio/MCA_contacts.jsp" href="https://www.nsf.gov/bio/MCA_contacts.jsp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://www.nsf.gov/bio/MCA_contacts.jsp</a>).</em></p></div><div><em><br></em></div><div><em><strong>Visit <a href="https://socialscience.umbc.edu/research/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">CS3's funding page</a> for a full list of internal and external opportunities.  </strong></em></div><div><div><br></div></div></div>

Knowledge about the various manifestations of disinformation, the range of responses and success rate of interventions to counter disinformation remains fragmented and partial. In order to gain a better understanding of the knowledge gaps and areas where further research is required, as well as to identify opportunities for inter- and intra-regional cooperation, more research into the types of disinformation, the social factors enabling its spread, and possible contextually relevant interventions in the Global South is needed. This talk will provide an overview of some of these research efforts</span></div></div>

Y. Lin<br></strong>Professor &amp; Canada Research Chair in Plurilingual and Intercultural Education<br>Simon Fraser University</p><div></div><p><strong>Tuesday, November 16, 2021<br></strong><strong>4:30-5:30pm EST</strong></p><div><p><span><strong>Free registration by e-mail to <a href="mailto:TESOL@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">TESOL@umbc.edu</a></strong></span></p></div><div><strong>What does it mean to decolonize TESOL in a globalized world still dominated by “postcolonial desires for colonial English”? </strong> In this presentation, I seek to deconstruct the discourses that naturalize and normalize what we call “postcolonial desires for colonial English” (Lin &amp; Motha, 2021), a phenomenon observed in many officially post-colonial or independent societies as well as in contexts themselves considered (former) imperial powers. We do this first by tracing the historical origins of the gradual inscription of such desires upon the subjectivities and cultural imaginaries of the colonized by analyzing the historical processes of imperialism and colonialism, and the cultural and psychological aftermath of such processes.  I conclude by outlining what is needed to interrupt the working of the effects of these processes at the level of subjectivity and cultural imaginary, as well as at the micro and macro levels of critical analysis and intervention in TESOL.</div><p><strong><br></strong></p><p><strong>Reference<br></strong><span>Lin, A. Lin </strong>received her doctoral degree from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto, in 1996. Her research and teaching have focused on classroom discourse analysis, bilingual plurilingual education, academic literacies, language across the curriculum, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), translanguaging and trans-semiotizing. She has published six research books and over 100 research articles and book chapters.     <div class="html-content"><p>Apply using the form linked below </p><p><strong>Applications are due by Friday 10/29 at 2pm </strong></p><p><strong>If you cannot make this deadline,</strong>                                                                  please contact Dr. Antkowiak <a href="mailto:lhussey@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">hussey@umbc.edu</a> about potential flexibility </p><p>Maryland’s state legislature, the General Assembly (MGA), matches students to internships with state senators, delegates, committees, and caucuses during its annual January-April session. This popular program engages interns in very substantive legislative work and has helped many recent UMBC graduates who have participated in it gain their first jobs. It also pays a modest stipend.</p><p>The MGA requires that prospective interns be sponsored by a professor who provides academic credit for the experience. <strong>Interns must be at least 18 years old and have GPAs of at least 3.0. Students with somewhat lower GPAs may be considered if recommended by the sponsoring professor.</strong></p><p>Dr. Laura Antkowiak (formerly Hussey) sponsors UMBC students from any major for this experience and offers academic credit through POLI 448 (4 credits). Depending on hours interned, students may be eligible for additional credit. Students seeking this sponsorship should email their completed MGA internship application (<a href="https://politicalscience.umbc.edu/files/2021/10/2022-Student-Intern-Application.docx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2022 Student Intern Application</a>), including all required attachments, to Dr. Antkowiak (formerly Hussey) at <a href="mailto:lhussey@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">lhussey@umbc.edu</a>  by October 29th at 2pm. An application for sponsorship also requires an informal interview and two recommendations from faculty. Faculty should convey recommendations directly to Dr. Antkowiak (formerly Hussey) – in informal emails, formal letters, or this <a href="https://politicalscience.umbc.edu/files/2019/09/Political-Science-Internship-Recommendation-Form.doc" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Political Science Internship Recommendation Form</a>.</p><p><span>The department continues to offer academic credit for other spring semester internships in politics, public policy, public administration, and the law via POLI 448 and POLI 438, as well as internship placement assistance for qualified juniors and seniors.
