Experience Capitol Hill with a Political Fundraising Internship!
Angerholzer Broz Consulting, LLC, the largest Democratic fundraising firm on Capitol Hill, seeks Summer Interns to begin in May/June and end in August (dates are flexible). We provide political consulting services and raise money for Democratic incumbents and candidates for the House of Representatives. Our clients include Members from around the country, on various committees and in positions of House Democratic leadership, and the Congressional Black Caucus.
We will be organizing new events and laying the groundwork for our clients’ success. Intern projects include donor research, event planning, administrative duties and working directly with the staffs of various top campaigns.
You will learn about campaign fundraising, be exposed to the workings of Capitol Hill, and provided with great networking opportunities. This internship requires a minimum of 3 days a week and provides a great hands-on learning experience with good professional exposure. You will be provided with a Metro/Public Transportation stipend. Political experience is a plus but not required.

We have posted these for the purpose of making students aware of potentially educational and professionally advantageous opportunities. We have postedevery such opportunity that candidates or members of candidates' campaigns have sent us, and in most cases, using the campaigns' own wording.

Relationship Violence Prevention Advocates
Position
Description (Fall, 2014)

August 8)
The UMBC Relationship Violence Prevention Advocates program is a comprehensive program
funded by a grant from Verizon. The
program changes each year and is designed to educate the UMBC Community on
specific relationship violence prevention information. The goals of the program are to
systematically raise awareness and support for a campus to be without
relationship violence and create an environment that encourages healthy
relationships and the victims of relationship violence to come forward and
receive support. Specific components of the program include:

Relationship
violence prevention education and training for volunteer students, faculty and
staff advocates who represent various groups and populations on campus. These
advocates will help to educate the campus community about relationship violence
prevention through their networks, and
serve as referral sources for those who have experienced or are impacted by
relationship abuse/violence or have questions about unhealthy relationships.

General Description:
UMBC Relationship Violence
Prevention Advocates are UMBC community members who: a) are able to provide
relationship/dating/intimate partner violence prevention information to their
community networks, b) observe the UMBC community and take notice of and
report community issues related to
relationship violence to advocate trainers, c) encourage bystander intervention
techniques within UMBC community network, d) make appropriate referrals, e)
provide helpful resource information to their UMBC community network and
individuals, f) support violence prevention efforts on campus, and g) volunteer
to staff events (tabling, etc).
1. Must attend training on August 25, 2014 from 9:30am-4pm
2. Must attend the following Friday meetings
at noon- August 29; September 5, 12, 19; October 3, 17, 31; November 14;
December 5
3. Must share educational information
with your network of friends, colleagues, student organizations, team members, and
at campus events
4. Must utilize skills to make
referrals, provide resources, intervene safely when necessary using bystander
intervention skills.
Training topics for advocates will include: characteristics of unhealthy
relationships, domestic violence and abuse, healthy relationship skills,
bystander intervention, on and off campus resources, helping and referral
skills, men’s role in preventing violence, presentation skills, changing
culture, identity group needs, etc.

Environmental Justice Internship (MD State Gov)
OVERVIEW:
The Maryland Department of the Environment is seeking a student intern to work on environmental justice (EJ) initiatives related to quality communication with communities and other stakeholders. The primary objectives are (1) to assist a student to complement his/her academic career with work-place experience, (2) to formulate a pilot program focused on environmental justice and community outreach, (3) develop and edit communication pieces regarding EJ and communities, and (4) assist with upkeep of the EJ portion of the MDE website.
INTERNSHIP:
The internship will be an unpaid, credit bearing academic/work related experience. The intern is expected to work at least 10 hours a week on the project over the course of the semester.
PROJECT GOALS:
MDE would like an intern to research and develop a community outreach tool for communities affected by various environmental issues.
1. Pilot Project: This will be a pilot project implemented in a few communities. The first phase of this project will be to research how different communities prefer to receive information, i.e. community meetings, community newsletters, etc. The second stage of the project will focus on consolidating and analyzing this research while developing a tool for surveying communities about their interests and preferred methods of communication. In the third stage of the project, the student will implement the survey tool to determine the preferences of the various pilot communities and then analyze the results. Ultimately, the Department would like to be able to use this tool repeatedly as communities express interest in projects and/or issues of concern.
2. Assist the Office of Environmental Justice & the Office of Communications in editing, drafting, and revising brochures for stakeholders about MDE programs and processes as it relates to EJ.
3. Attend policy meetings to observe and recommend ways to address and improve EJ policy at the Department.
SUPERVISION:
This internship would primarily be supervised by the Environmental Justice Coordinator at MDE; however, the student would also interact and work with the Air and Radiation Management Administration at MDE, the Office of Communications at MDE, and the Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Communities (CEJSC).

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
2014 Calendar of Events
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Every 2 minutes, someone in America is sexually assaulted.
1 in 5 college women experience a sexual assault.
95% of college-aged victims know their attacker.
These are just a few statistics to highlight why this month of awareness is so very important for our campus and our greater community. We have several events this April that will honor the voices and experiences of survivors of sexual assault. Additionally, there are events that will seek to raise awareness about sexual assault and the importance of effective consent.

March is Women's History Month!
Last year's Women's History Month's national theme was Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The theme honored generations of women who throughout American history have used their intelligence, imagination, sense of wonder, and tenacity to make extraordinary contributions to the STEM fields. At UMBC we honored last year's theme by partnering with the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) to feature some of their amazing students participating in technology in the engineering and information technology fields.
Since last year's spotlights were so meaningful and successful in highlighting the important work of women in STEM fields, we're back at it for year two. This year's national theme is Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment. Though there is no specific mention of STEM, it is impossible to deny that acts of courage and commitment from women (and their allies) in STEM occur everyday. So with that, we are honored to bring you the 2nd Annual CWIT Showcase in honor of Women's History Month.

Describe what sparked your interest STEM and the journey to choosing your major.
What primarily sparked my interest was the fact that I was always told that I couldn't do it. Being continuously told that engineering was for men made me want to do it even more. I guess I like a good challenge! I chose chemical engineering because I realized just how diverse the job prospects were after graduation; from cosmetics to consumer goods to refineries it seemed like there was nothing they couldn't do!
Tell us about an internship, research experience or project that you are proud of.
An internship I am really proud of was the one I did last year at the L'Oreal Research and Innovation campus in New Jersey. It was my dream to work for a cosmetic company and acquiring the internship alone was something to be proud of. I really liked that my project had a direct impact on the company, my findings would actually be used in their formulations. It was really cool.
Who are your role models in the engineering or IT field?
My role models tend to shift every now and then, I think women who are able to balance a strong work life and home life are the ones that really inspire me. They are the ones I often ask "how do you do it?". Every time, its a slightly different answer but one thing still remains the same - hard work!
In your experience, how has being a woman in engineering or IT demanded character, courage or commitment?
There are definitely some moments that stick out to you more than others. You constantly wonder why your opinion is being disregarded first hand or why you need to speak louder to get your point across. It's an ongoing battle but it takes a lot of character, keeping professional and realizing that you have to gain the respect of people and not just expect it to be handed to you. If you do good quality work, people will notice and you won't need to speak up so loudly any more.
The Center for Women In Technology (CWIT) is dedicated to increasing the representation of women in the creation of technology in the engineering and information technology fields. CWIT efforts begin with nurturing a strong group of Scholars, grow to building community resources for other women in these majors, extend to fostering a healthy gender climate and ITE pedagogy in College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) departments, and finally expand into outreach efforts to increase interest in technical careers. A successful program for female-friendly engineering and information technology education at UMBC will help make UMBC a destination for women (and men) interested in technical careers and serve as a national model for other universities.
