<Title>Economics department's Dennis Coates honored as first recipient of Coates-Humphreys NAASE Distinguished Award</Title>
<Tagline>From the North American Association of Sports Economists</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p>In June 2025, the North American Association of Sports Economists (NAASE) announced the establishment of the Coates-Humphreys NAASE Distinguished Research Award, named for UMBC Department of Economics's <span>Dennis Coates</span> and West Virginia University’s Dr. Brad Humphreys. </p><p><br></p><p>Dr. Coates and Dr. Humphreys are the award’s inaugural winners.</p><p><br></p><p>The creation of the award honors Dr. Coates’s scholarship in sports economics, including serving as a founding member and President of NAASE and an extensive list of published papers and books. In 2022, he won the NAASE <span>Larry Hadley Service Award </span>which honors outstanding and unusual contributions and service to NAASE and the field of sports economics. </p><p><br></p><p>Congratulations Dr. Coates!</p><br></div>

    <div>Students spend much of their day sitting in 
    classrooms, and the comfort, placement, and size of those seats has a 
    real affect on how we learn. Join Dr. Kate Drabinski and students from 
    her spring activism class for a presentation and discussion about campus
     furniture, accessibility, and what it takes to make our classrooms 
    accessible for all.</div>

    <div>
    <strong>Dr. Kate Drabinski </strong>is Teaching 
    Professor in GWST and Director of the Humanities Scholars Program. She 
    teaches a spring course on activism, and this presentation highlights 
    student work aimed at making UMBC better. She is joined by students Gab 
    Dungan, Taz Stone, and Nicole Shif.</div>

    <div>The DMV area’s unique blend of Central American and 
    Caribbean migrations is often overlooked in favor of larger places like 
    New York and Los Angeles. Not anymore! Join Dr. Tania Lizarazo, Dr. 
    Thania Muñoz, Dr. Yolanda Valencia, and Dr. María Célleri, co-leads of 
    UMBC's Latin American Feminisms Faculty Working Group, to learn more 
    about their <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/summerspecialprograms/events/143538/13ba5/854adffcbe392b84f639641b8e4b1a0c/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fdreshercenter.umbc.edu%2Fabya-yala-project%2F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Abya Yala Project</a>,
     a community-engaged multi-step and mixed-media project that will name, 
    archive, and highlight the efforts and varied lived experiences of the 
    Latine/x community in the larger DMV region. Designed as an interactive 
    website, it will feature contributions from students, faculty, artists, 
    and community members, emphasizing the diversity of Latinx/e experiences
     beyond traditional migration hubs. This website will center these 
    communities’ voices through various mediums, such as academic essays, 
    creative writing, stories, art, and multimedia.This interactive website 
    will serve as their first step towards creating the Abya Yala Center at 
    UMBC in the years to come. </div>
