Ramadan iftar
Assalamu Alaykum (Hello) everyone!
We entered the blessed month of Ramadan.
Most of masajid in the area held Taraweeh during last few days, and iftar is following on June 15th for the UMBC community.
The Muslim Student Association (MSA) will be giving Jummah every Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the UMBC Inter-Fraternity Council throughout Ramadan. They will also have mini iftars once a week in Shaa Allah (Shaa Allah is an Arabic expression which translates to "If Allah wills").
Please check the following schedule.
Iftar Dates
- Thursday, June 9th, 2016
- Wednesday, June 15th, 2016 (Main iftar)
- Thursday, June 23rd, 2016
- Thursday, June 30th, 2016
These iftars are open to anyone, especially those who do not have families or friends nearby to break their fast with, so please feel free to spread the word.
They also host a few Syrian refugee families during these iftars through the BRIDGE America organization. For more information about BRIDGE America please contact Sherif Elsafty elsafty1@umbc.edu. Additionally, if anyone is interested in sponsoring one of these iftars, please contact the UMBC MSA at umbcmsa@gmail.com
*** Glossary of Muslim culture ***
1. iftar: the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during Ramadan
2. Jummah: sixth day of the Islamic week = Friday
In Islamic weekdays, the "first day" of the week corresponds with Sunday.
People get together on Friday to attend Islamic praying service
3. masajid: A building used as a place of Muslim worship
4. Ramadan: the 9th month of the Islamic calendar as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief
2016 Ramadan began in the evening of Sunday, June 5 and ends in the evening of Tuesday, July 5 (6/5 - 7/5)

Breezeway is on the way to go to the Commons, under the Biology building.

Due to police activity downtown Baltimore, UMBC Transit Downtown Route is unable to service stop #7. Greene St & Lombard St (UMB).

- Saturday: CLOSED
- Sunday: 12:00 Noon - 7:00 p.m.
Exceptions:
Sunday, May 29: CLOSED
Monday, May 30: CLOSED
Atrium and Retriever Learning Center (RLC): always open.
RLC access is by valid UMBC ID card swipe only.
Intersession is a short period of a few weeks between semesters or quarters, so the library will open later in the summer than during intersession.
