Dear Students,
For Muslims, Ramadan is the holy month of fasting, blessings and spiritual reflection. It is a very challenging time, especially if one is studying abroad and away from loved ones.
Iftar is the time during Ramadan when Muslims break their fast. At this time, families and communities come together to eat, drink and celebrate together.
The ELI community will gather together on Tuesday, July 7 from 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm. We invite all ELI students as well as their friends and family to join us during this time.
We also invite students to prepare their favorite recipes for the event. Here is your chance to show other students some of your favorite foods! The ELI will provide drinks and refreshments.

The Kinetic Sculpture Race is a different kind of race where creativity, not speed, determines the winner.
Every year, creative individuals from all over Baltimore build their kinetic sculptures and enter them in the race.
Thousands of people from all over Maryland come to watch the "race", although it is more similar to a parade.
Clearly, the Kinetic Sculpture Race is one of the most interesting events in Baltimore. So, would you like to go?
Great! The race is on Sunday, June 14. The UMBC Shuttle Bus will giving rides to students on the day of the race! Don't miss it!
The UMBC Shuttle Bus will leave campus at 9:00 AM and return at 2:00 PM. The race will begin at The American Visionary Arts Museum located at the Inner Harbor.
If you choose to drive, there will be free parking at the Baltimore Museum of Industry on Key Highway.

Level 2 students start their own blog project
There are two types of people who use the internet: creators and consumers. Actually, we can be both of these things at any given time.
"Creators" create things such as videos, articles, music, graphics, web pages blog posts and everything else that you experience when you use the internet. We can call all of these things content.
"Consumers" consume things, or experience them. So, when you sit down to watch that Youtube video or read that news article on your favorite news site, you are consuming content.
It is safe to say that most people use the internet to consume content rather than create content. However, advancements in technology and software have made it far easier for anyone to begin creating content for the internet.
Some of our Level 2 students have gone from being content consumers to being content creators. They have started a blog, or an online journal, in order to write about their experiences in the US as international students.
Please visit the ELI student blog at this link. Feel free to comment and post your response to students' writing. When you post, don't be afraid of making grammar mistakes - no one is grading you! Just focus on being clear. Also, please be polite.

Do you love soccer? Are you and your ELI friends looking for a place to play? Well, we have great news for you!
The ELI Soccer League begins this Thursday!
ELI students will have access to Field 1 every Thursday from 5 PM - 7 PM. Students should come with their own equipment including a soccer ball.
If you don't know where Field 1 is, don't worry. Check out the link to see it on a map. Also, some of us will be meeting in front of the ELI Front Desk at 4:45 on Thursday to walk to the field together.

Practice your English with a fluent speaker!
What are Conversation Circles?
They are groups of ELI students matched with one fluent English speaking volunteer. The volunteer may be a UMBC student or ELI faculty or staff. The volunteer has agreed to meet with 4 to 5 ELI students once a week for casual, free conversation in the UC student lounge.
Students can choose one of two time blocks to meet with their circle: 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM or 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM.
How to apply
Applying is easy! Just follow this
link and complete the short application form. Within two weeks you will receive an email to your UMBC email account about your circle's meeting time and place.

50 Common Interview Questions
A great way to prepare for a job interview!
Right now, ELI students are mainly focused on learning English. For many of you, your English studies lead directly to the university, but for some it will be time to find a job.
Have you ever been in a job interview before? Do you know what some of the common questions are? Here are a few samples:
- Tell me about a time you made a mistake.
- Tell me how you handled a difficult situation.
- How would you deal with an angry or irate customer?
Those seem like difficult questions to answer. However, if you think about them well before the interview, you should have some great answers to give.

Congratulations! You made it to the final week of the Spring semester!
Please remember to check your UMBC email for reminders and announcements from ELI staff and faculty.
Also, if you are travelling outside of the USA during summer break, please get your I-20 signed by ELI staff. Just ask for Vanessa or Sarita at the front desk.
One more reminder: SACM Scholars, please be sure to renew your financial guarantee before the beginning of the Summer semester so that you won't miss any classes.
Dear Students,
Can you believe how close we are to the end of the Spring Semester? We know most of you are focused on doing the best you can in your current classes, but we have a special announcement to make for the Summer Semester.
As you know, summer classes at the ELI begin on May 26 and end on July 17. We are aware that Eid ul-Fitr is also onJuly 17. If Muslim students wish to take this day off, we ask that you come to the front desk and fill out a special request form. Filling out this form ensures that your absence will be excused and your F-1 status will not be affected.
We have asked instructors not to schedule final exams, presentations or assignments on July 17. However, please plan to attend all summer classes until then.
