This week is the beginning of UMBC's Homecoming Celebration!

What is Homecoming?

Homecoming is an old tradition in the United States. It is a celebration that happens every year in late September or early October. This celebration is called Homecoming because the school invites alumni, or students who have graduated, to "come home" and celebrate the history and traditions of their old school.

These traditions include sports games, dances, rallies, parades and live music.

UMBC has a wonderful Homecoming schedule that begins this week, Monday, October 5 to Saturday, October 10.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7

Bonfire
Dusk, Erickson Field

Join the campus for this much-anticipated Homecoming tradition featuring the legendary UMBC Bonfire! Come early for great food & giveaways!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8

Talent Show

9 p.m., University Center Ballroom

Witness UMBC’s finest performers as they take the stage at this annual competition. Singers, dancers, comedians, athletes and many more compete to be crowned UMBC’s most talented.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9

Big Prize Poetry SLAM!
6-8 p.m., Performing Arts and Humanities Building Atrium

Slam BIG and Win BIG at the third annual Poetry Slam hosted by the English Department! You won’t want to miss this event! A 1st prize of $200 will go to the winner of this dazzling high-energy slam. 2nd and 3rd prizes, too, for students and alumni sharing their original work, judged by students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Retriever Rally
9 – 10:30 p.m., Retriever Activities Center (RAC)

Pack the RAC and show your Retriever Pride! Tons of freebies, food, t-shirts, games, and the introduction of this year’s basketball teams. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10

Comedy Show Social
5 - 7:30 p.m., Flat Tuesday's, The Commons

Before the laughs begin, come in and meet up with friends in our campus pub. We will have discounted pricing on beverages for comedy show attendees that are 21 and older who come in with their tickets.

Crab Feast
5 – 8 p.m., Commons Terrace

It’s not a party without delicious crabs, great friends, and entertainment. Back by popular demand, this Crab Feast includes an all-you-can-eat buffet including Maryland blue crabs; homemade Maryland crab and cream of crab soups; beef, turkey, and ham carving stations; BBQ chicken, Italian sausage, pulled pork, baked ziti, corn on the cob, potato salad and much more. A cash bar will also be available. Entertainment will be provided byLast to Fire, a Rock/Soul/Funk band comprised of UMBC alums and current students Jason Palumbo ’13, Evan Ponter ’12, Jon Constantinides ’15 and Alex Appelbaum ’15,

Get your tickets by Friday, September 25 for a discounted rate of $40 per person and $20 per child (ages 4-11). After September 25, registration will increase to $45 for adults. At the door (space permitting), tickets will increase to $50 for adults and $25 for children. This event is free for children 4 and under.

Are you creative? Do you want to help us decorate the front desk? We will have two times on Thursday when students can help us create decorations: during lunch hour, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm; 2) during the Conversation Cafe, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

Please remember that UMBC has a Smoke-Free campus policy. UMBC is not the only campus to have this new policy. In fact, 800 campuses in the US are now smoke-free.

The campus offers many options for students who want to quit smoking: University Health Services offers free visits with a medical provider who will provide support and discuss various options for quitting. You can find more information on the UHS website or can call 410-455-2542 to make an appointment.

Students who choose not to quit can go to one of two locations on campus to smoke:

Next to the Police Station

LOCATION #2

Behind the Physics Building, next to Parking Lot #2 on Park Road.

Please be aware that students who smoke anywhere outside of these two locations could get a fine. This fine will prevent students from registering for classes until it is paid.

Why do we celebrate it? Dear Students,

Independence Day, also known as the 4th of July, is nearly here! Most people know that fireworks are a big part of this holiday, but do you really know what this day represents for Americans?

On July 4th, 1776 a congress of representatives announced that the original thirteen American colonies were no longer part of the British Empire - the colonies were now thirteen independent sovereign states. The representatives signed a document, which is now famous, called The Declaration of Independence. This document began with one of the most famous sentences in the English language:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

These words have been memorized by millions of American school children across many generations. The three values - Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness - are what Americans celebrate onIndependence Day.

You can actually see the original document on display at the National Archives in the Library of Congress located in Washington, D.C. It is a popular location for tourists who visit D.C. for the city's famous fireworks show. Be sure to check it out!

Speaking of fireworks, you don't have to go all the way to D.C. to see a good show. In fact, Baltimore has its own fantastic fireworks extravaganza!

Here is a description of the celebration:

Celebrate the Fourth of July with live music and celebratory fireworks at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Baltimore’s Fourth of July Celebration takes place Saturday, July 4, 2015 from 7pm to 10pm. Live music from the popular contemporary ensemble The United States Navy Band Cruisers begins at 7pm at the Inner Harbor Amphitheater, located at Pratt and Light streets. The fireworks show, choreographed to festive music, begins at 9:30pm. The display is produced by Pyrotecnico. The holiday fireworks can be viewed from several locations in downtown and the surrounding areas, including Federal Hill, Fell’s Point and Harbor East.
