TOPIC: Natural Disasters From A Geophysical And Human Geographical Perspective

Dr Halverson's deep knowledge of the relationships between disasters and human-geography interactions, will add to all of our understanding how to predict the kinds of consequences we can expect from various kinds of interactions between natural and man-made phenomena.

This EHS grad seminar is a special one, covering a really important topic: the need for legal and safety protection for refugee women and children. As you probably know, there are scores of large refugee camps in different parts of the world, and, all too often, women and children are abused or worse, either in the camps or on their way to the camps. We are even seeing some of this here in the States, in the commercially staffed refugee detention centers on contract to ICE.

If you look at the refugee camps in Turkey, Lebanon, Hungary, Libya, Central African Republic, etc, human rights abuses against women and children are rampant. So, come and learn from our own students (Noor Abdel Rahman, Taylor Lutich, and Kara Buckmaster) about this important issue dogging the world's attempts to provide emergency health and humanitarian services for refugees in disparate parts of the world. Non-EMS students and faculty are welcome to attend.

John Warchal is an alumnus of our EHS undergraduate program, and holds a Master of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.  He'll be talking on 11/1/2017 (Wednesday, 3:00pm-5:00pm in Sherman Hall, Room 305, A Wing) about the importance of using analytical methods in emergency preparedness and response decisions...which is one of the most powerful tools for breaking away from the old "well, we always did it this way" crowd. Much of what John has to share with us can be applied to many of the decisions we make, which affect the well-being and lives of others.   Be there!

More and more, it's Emergency Health Services former graduate students we turn to for up-to-date expertise. Last week it was Diane Flint, PhD candidate and full-time EHS undergrad program director and instructor. This week it's our very own Jenn Ryan, currently a PhD candidate and full-time state-level emergency manager and part-time instructor in our graduate program.

Jenn is a dynamic speaker with lots of government Emergency Management (EM) experience, and loves to get thoughtful and probing questions during her talks.  By the way, I really like this topic, as one who has tried to base my conclusions on evidence rather than doctrine...often to find that we still lack in good evidence for much of what we consider to be "true".
