Creating accessible content and interactions to support diverse learning preferences are the guiding principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and support a wide range of learners, whether or not they identify as a person with a disability.

Improving the accessibility of course content not only helps ensure students with different abilities can access materials, but it improves the learning experience for everyone, including those who use mobile devices. 

Their workshops  offer ideas for developing a +1 strategy to improve your course accessibility and highlight tools to get started. 
These tools start with Blackboard Ally. Available in both Original and Ultra courses, Ally scans content in Blackboard and provides feedback and tools to identify and fix accessibility issues. 

Leverage Ally's powerful alternative format options yourself, and let students know they can download content in multiple formats that give them choices in how they watch, read, or listen.

Strong Scholars Program Phase II Interns

The Hattie M. Strong Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate students who have exhibited outstanding successes and enthusiasm in field experiences prior to the final year of their program or to graduate students whose life experiences prior to enrollment reveal the same strengths. One $5,000.00 scholarships will be awarded to UMBC teacher candidates entering PHASE II of internship. Sherman Scholars kicked off the Number Ninjas math summer program at Maree G. Farring Elementary/Middle School in South Baltimore. Nearly 50 students grades 1-5 enrolled in the four-week, full-day program.

The program is directed by Sherman & UMBC Education Alum Atom Zerfas and staffed by two math teachers, six Sherman Scholars, and six Baltimore high school students through YouthWorks. students engaged in small group lessons, blended learning computer programs, restorative circles, and learning stations. In the afternoon, students participated in math-based projects developed by Sherman Scholars.

Right now, fewer than 10% of students from low-income communities graduate from college. All children in this country deserve an education that gives them the opportunity to realize their fullest potential. Teach For America (TFA) seeks passionate, social justice-driven seniors and graduate students from all majors and backgrounds.

Apply by March 4th (job offers go out April 25) for the Teach For America corps member position, a two year teaching commitment (ranging from pre-K to 12th grade) in one of 52 low-income communities across the country. You’ll earn a full salary (up to $51,000/year) and benefits, state teaching certification, and an optional Master’s degree. Beyond the two years, our alumni are change agents, inside and outside of schools, tackling issues in education, law, medicine and beyond.

Concerned Black Men National's CBM CARES(R) Mentoring Initiative

A national program, CBM CARES® Mentoring Initiative has just come to Baltimore and will work with three Baltimore City schools!  It's led by former Shriver Center Choice Program attendee, Imhotep O. Simba. As a former Choice youth, Imhotep was one of the panelists at the February 2015 symposium, "Supporting Academic Success of Youth in Juvenile Justice Settings," which was co-hosted by The Choice Program and the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans.
