Hey UMBC!

What will you be doing this Spring Break 2012?  Come out this Spring to learn, volunteer and give back to your local community!  ASB trips are student-run, week long service engagement trips designed to challenge students and combat civic issues underlying larger societal concerns such as homelessness, intellectual disabilities, animal rights, health care, and the environment.  The ASB trips included for Spring 2012 are the following:
The Arc trip involves students serving the mentally and physically disabled population at the Arc of Carroll County.
The Environmental trip has a focus on sustainable living in urban environments.

The TEAR trip (Through the Eyes of a Refugee) serves the refugee population of Baltimore.

The Animal Advocacy trip explores several aspects of animal rights and humane treatment of animals.

The Day in the Life trip focuses on the homeless population of Baltimore City.
The 2012 trips will begin on Sunday, March 18th and finish on either Thursday, March 22nd or Friday, March 23rd.  The cost of each trip is approximately $75.00 to cover expenses such as food and gas during the trip.  Join us on Facebook for regular updates at "UMBC Alternative Spring Break (ASB)".  For more information, you can also go to the My UMBC Serves group at http://my.umbc.edu/groups/serve.  Click on the documents tab to download the Trip Participant application and other informational documents.

The Women's Center is still celebrating its 20th Anniversary and will continue doing so into the Spring semester! 

The University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center is pleased to offer a summer fellowship program to support undergraduate students that are interested in cardiovascular research. Any student who is currently enrolled at any degree granting University or College is eligible to apply, with preference give to those students interested in a career in research.

Each student will be matched, based on their interests, to a laboratory that is led by a faculty member of the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center. This collection of laboratories is involved in nationally recognized research, in topics such as atherosclerosis, genetic cardiomyopathies, blood clotting disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, vascular biology and heart failure.

The stipend for 2012 will be $4000 for ten weeks of full-time work from May 29th to August 3rd, 2012.  There will be a research forum at the end of the summer in which fellows will present their work, as well as opportunities to attend research seminars throughout the summer.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program in

Educational Psychology and Applied Developmental Science (EP-ADS) & Education Policy

The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia

This fully funded 8-week internship that is designed to encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the field of education research to consider careers in academic, policy, or research organizations. Rising seniors are eligible for these paid research internships at UVA during Summer 2012. Interns will work with faculty on ongoing research focusing on schools, classrooms, and other youth settings as contexts critical to child and adolescent development.They will have the opportunity to collect and analyze data, write a section of a research paper, participate in research meetings, attend a research conference, and participate in related workshops and a GRE prep course.

The Outreach group at The Genome Institute at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking bright, innovative and talented students to participate in the OGR Undergraduate Scholars Program. This is an eight-week summer program providing students with an intensive, mentored research experience in genomics and related fields. Students will be a part of an excellent lab team led by one of the established scientists at Washington University School of Medicine. At the end of the program all participants will give an oral presentation of their summer research findings. The program includes enrichment activities such as: Kaplan GRE course, journal club, career counseling/workshops, presentation/writing skills and social activities.

Tentative Dates of the Program: May 30 - July 27, 2012.

Provisions of the Program: Competitive stipend, on-campus housing, and travel to/from program.

Requirements:

• Must be a sophomore, junior or senior in a 4-year institution at the time of entry into the program
• GPA: Competitive – Highly competitive
• Residency: Must be a US Citizen or a Permanent Resident
• Major: science, technology, engineering, or mathematics fields (some exceptions)
