The Summer Undergraduate Research Program [SURP] is an intensive, nine-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for undergraduate students who are interested in biological research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will complete an independent research project and present their findings at a competitive poster session. 

The program runs from Monday, June 10 through Saturday, August 10, 2013(Monday, June 10 and Saturday, August 10 are travel days). Students must be able to commit to this entire period in order to participate.

Areas of Research

Students will be paired with a faculty mentor after selecting one of the following areas of interest:

• Basic Science: Conducts structural, genetic, molecular, cellular, developmental and evolutionary biology;
• Human Biology: Interdisciplinary research; conducts lab-based and computational research at the interface of basic, clinical and population sciences;
• Public Health: Uses large populations as a "laboratory" to look for links between cancer and its possible triggers, from diet and lifestyle to environmental and genetic factors. Conducts statistical, epidemiological and prevention studies around the world;
• Clinical Research: Works to develop and analyze new treatments for cancers and other Diseases; and
• Vaccine and Infectious Disease: Integrates computational, laboratory and clinical research method to advance the understanding of microbial pathogenesis and infectious disease processes.

This is a part/time project (20 hours/week, start date: ASAP, end date: May, 2013, negotiable) which will require the student to spend concentrated few hours a day at the NASA/GSFC facility at Greenbelt, MD. If the student has the ability she/he would be encouraged in the data analysis to develop statistical models relating the measurements. The student would also help out with other analysis and measurement activities that our group is doing. The Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP) at the Bloomberg School of Public Health is a 10-week summer program that provides undergraduates with a graduate-level, independent research project in the biomedical or public health field.

Students work under the direct mentoring of accomplished Johns Hopkins researchers, gaining valuable experience in a collaborative, challenging and fun environment.

The "Hands-On, Minds-On" research experience for undergraduates (REU) brings together faculty and staff from a variety of different disciplines, departments, and offices at Virginia Tech. Ten students will be selected from national four-year colleges and universities and within the Virginia Community College System to participate in a 10-week National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates Program.

Participants will:

• Have both a "hands-on" as well as a "minds-on" set of experiences, designed to immerse students in a variety of engaging ways in the research process and the begin the development of a research identity.
• Develop a strong understanding of interdisciplinary research
• Become part of a collaborative research community
• Receive $5,000 stipend, free housing (with three meals per day) on campus and travel support to/from Virginia Tech
• Have access to the library, computers, and recreational facilities
