Program Description: Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environmentdevoted exclusively to biomedical research. The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1200 laboratories/research projects located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Phoenix, AZ; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Detroit, MI.  NOTE: the number of positions in Phoenix, Hamilton, Framingham, and Detroit is limited.

Internships cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students generally arriving at the NIH in May or June. The NIH Institutes and the Office of Intramural Training & Education sponsor a wide range of summer activities including lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, and Summer Poster Day.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program

Genetics, Genomics & Development, Biochemistry, Molecular & Cell Biology, and Biophysics, Cornell University

June 2 - August 9, 2013

Eligibility: Most students entering their junior and senior years majoring in the life sciences with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to students with strong interest in gaining research experience in preparation for graduate study. Members of underrepresented minority groups, students with disabilities, and women are encouraged to apply. Participants in the REU program must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students who will have completed the bachelor's degree by May of this academic year are not eligible for REU programs, but are invited to apply to the University's graduate programs (see http://mbg.cornell.edu/).

Compensation: The stipend will be $3,400. In addition to the stipend, housing in an on-campus residence hall with other REU students is provided, along with supplemental compensation for transportation while on campus. A travel budget to and from Ithaca is also provided.

2. Please request two letters of recommendation from faculty members or employers familiar with your abilities, interests, and motivation towards research. General Description:

UMBC Relationship Violence Prevention Advocates are UMBC community members who: a) are able to provide relationship/dating/intimate partner violence prevention information to their community networks, b) observe the UMBC community and take notice of and report community issues related to relationship violence to advocate trainers, c) encourage bystander intervention techniques within UMBC community network, d) make appropriate referrals, e) provide helpful resource information to UMBC community network and individuals, f) support violence prevention efforts on campus.

1. Attend training on January 27, 2013 from 3pm-8pm
2. Attend the following Friday meetings at noon- February 8, 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15; April 5, 19 and May 3.
3. Share educational information with the advocate’s network of friends, colleagues, student organizations, team members, etc.
