1. Where do you work in the library and how long have you worked there?
I work as a copy-cataloger in technical services. I’ve been at AOK since July 2002, so almost 12 years.

2. What would you like the campus community to know about your job?
I like having a low-key, behind-the-scenes job and seeing all the new books.

3. What’s your favorite aspect of working at UMBC?
It’s a tie between my friend Chrisie Cowden (who works in Circulation) and the Canada geese that hang out on campus.

4. Do you have a favorite project, event, or memory from your time working in the library?
I gave a presentation at the Internet Librarian conference in Monterey, California in 2007. That was an amazing experience.

5. If you were a UMBC student, what library services would you use/appreciate the most?
The Leisure Reading collection is a lot of fun.

6. If you had to survive on a desert island with only one book, movie, or TV show, what would it be and why?
Lolita, because I’ve read it 15 times and never get tired of Nabokov’s word play and cleverness.

7. A wizard has turned you into your favorite animal. What are you?
That’s a tough one, because I have a lot of favorite animals. Sharks are my very favorite, but I think I’d rather be a cat, because sharks don’t sleep and cats sleep perpetually.

8. Anything else you’d like to add?
UMBC undergrads never fail to impress me with their dedication to academics. It gives me a lot of joy to see them studying together in the library’s RLC, even on a Friday afternoon!

We met Rajashree last Fall semester and we thought it would be a good idea to revisit our researcher's again to promote the hard work that she has been working on.

 Rajashree is a Bioinformatics & Computational Biology major and an undergraduate researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Her research probed into the micro-biological world of protein interaction which is essential to understand function within cells, pathways and relationship to diseases.


How did you find your mentor for year research project?
Through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholars Program.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
I chose the lab because of the friendly environment, the skills I knew I would be learning, and the idea of developing a tool that could be useful for the scientific community.

Is this your first independent research project?
Yes.

Do you get course credit for this work?
Yes, it counts for an upper level biology elective.

How much time do you put into it?
I put it in about 12 hours a week.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?
A fellow undergraduate in the lab received a URA.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?
When I applied, I had 2.5 years of undergraduate courses. This includes Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physics, Statistics and Computer Science.

Was the application difficult to do?
No, because I have written abstracts before and I was very familiar with my work.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?
I wrote the application independently and she reviewed and edited it.

What has been the hardest part about your research?
The hardest part about the research is evaluating my method. It’s a unique method and is hard to find other methods out there to compare it to.

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?
My research relates to the skills I learned in my computer science classes and it can be applied to the information I learn in my biology classes.

What else are you involved in on campus?
I am president of Hindu Students Council and a member of UMBC ADAA, and the South Asian fusion dance team

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

“What is research, but a blind date with knowledge.”

What you learn from books and lectures is incomparable to the information and skills you learn from being involved in research. In my opinion, a great research experience is based on how much you learned and what skills you gained from the experience.

What are your career goals?
I will be applying to PhD programs this Fall. As I work towards completing my PhD, I will better understand whether or not I want to stay in academia, work for the government, or go into industry. I eventually would like to teach at the college level.

"Hide and Seek"/ "Chuppan Chupai" is an award-winning documentary directed by Saad Khan that explores the lives of four transgender, or "hijra," people and their daily trials and triumphs while living in the relatively conservative gender constructs of Pakistan, the second most populous Islamic country in the world.  The film depicts the secret yet open lives of a group of Pakistani sexual minorities, raising questions about transgender activism, religion, underground gay life, social acceptance and collective familial customs of transgenders in urban Pakistan.

Meet Samraat, he is a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major and an undergraduate researcher. The focus of his research will be to study bio-inspired, stimuli-responsive materials similar to mimosa pudica, a touch sensitive plant.

What research have you been doing this summer?
I am in a Chemistry Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) sponsored by the National Science Foundation at Kent State University. I work in the Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI) studying liquid crystals, and specifically, the droplet texture they sometimes form.

How did you find out about this opportunity?
I found a webpage through the National Science Foundation that listed several hundred summer research opportunities, many of them at universities around the nation, and many of them REU’s. This program happened to be on that list, and I was interested enough to apply.

Was there a formal application process?
Yes there was. It involved filling out basic information, writing a short essay, and sending my official transcript along with two letters of recommendation.

Was this your first independent research project?
Yes, I had never previously done any research, so this was my first research experience.

Do you get course credit for this work or get paid?
I get a stipend for the ten-week program along with housing in an on-campus residence hall. I am working with the Shriver Center to get the PRAC 98 notation on my transcript, along with possibly getting credit for BIOL 398 next semester.

How much time do you put into it?
We are expected to work about eight hours a day, five days a week, but it varies based on each advisor and each project. Some require much more time whereas others do not.

What are the benefits of this research program?
Firstly, I have met a lot of great people in this program: undergraduates, graduate students, professors, and several others along the way. Secondly, all twenty of us in this program get to present a poster detailing our research at a symposium at Case Western Reserve University. They also schedule picnics, academic lectures (with lunch), and other fun events for us.

What has been the hardest part about your work this summer?
The graduate student I was supposed to be directly working with has been out of the country, so it’s difficult when I get stuck on something, or don’t completely understand why something isn’t working the way I expected it to.

What was the most unexpected thing?
I am a biochemistry major, so I expected to be in a lab that involved work with biochemistry or something similar, but instead I am in a chemical physics lab. It was a tough adjustment, but I’m definitely learning a lot!

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
If you have the opportunity to do research, you should definitely do it. A lot of people in my program have a much better sense of what they want to do with their future because of this program, myself included.

What are your career goals?
I am pushing toward medical school. In the future I hope to be able to travel, providing medical care to those who desperately need it in underserved and developing areas.

What else are you involved in on campus? 

I am in the pre-medical society, Global Medical Brigades, and the club tennis team. This past year I was a campus tour guide, but next year I will be a Learning Assistant for Dr. Gierasch in CHEM 351!

1. Where do you work in the library and how long have you worked there?
Circulation department. 2 years as a student assistant, and since April 2012 as a staff member.

2. What would you like the campus community to know about your job?
I take care of the course reserves for the campus. If it’s on reserve, it has passed through my hands. I handle copyright processing on these items as well.

3. What’s your favorite aspect of working at UMBC?
The campus is so familiar to me. Between attending as an undergrad and working here as staff, I’ve gotten to know the community very well. I can honestly say that it is a pleasure to be a part of it all and that I am proud of what we accomplish.

4. Do you have a favorite project, event, or memory from your time working in the library?
The addition of the RLC was a lot of fun for me because I love to see the campus changing. In addition to providing students with a much needed 24-hour study space, it allowed the rest of the library to rethink our layout and service points.

5. If you were a UMBC student, what library services would you use/appreciate the most?
The online database access is extremely valuable. In my first undergrad, I relied on these systems to get me through my late night procrastination projects. Not that I recommend this behavior, of course.

6. If you had to survive on a desert island with only one book, movie, or TV show, what would it be and why?
BBC’s Sherlock. Every time I watch it, I see something new. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

7. A wizard has turned you into your favorite animal. What are you?
A polar bear. Appears cute and cuddly, but is not messing around.
