Returning Women Spotlight: Carrie Cleveland What's it like to be a non-traditional student?
The Women's Center exists to assist all women in achieving their full potential in education, career, and personal life through academic and intellectual growth, professional development, and personal empowerment. One of the ways we work to achieve this mission is in our support services and programs for Returning Women (undergraduate students over the age of 25). The Women's Center supports these students through a peer mentoring program, targeted events and forums, and scholarship opportunities. If you’re interested in learning more about the Returning Women’s meetings or scholarships, contact us at womens.center@umbc.edu. 

Who are you?
Carrie Cleveland. Social Work major, mother of three daughters, ages 9, 6, and 2.

What benefits have you experienced as a Newcombe Scholar?
I've found a community at UMBC. Being part of an amazing group of women (as a member of the Returning Women Scholars) who have such different life experiences has opened my eyes to the unique set of challenges that we all face as students. It also has made me want to share those challenges with others and make sure that we are represented on campus as well. 


What do you wish traditional students knew about being a non-traditional student? 
We are here for the same reason you are -- to learn. Our path may have been different (I usually say I took the long and windy road) but we want the same thing. 

What do you wish professors and the university knew about being a non-traditional student? 
Just because I may be older than you does not mean that I don't see value in your teaching. I appreciate you knowledge and wisdom. Also, I may miss class because I have a sick kid who can't be left in daycare or with a sitter. Believe me, I want to be in class learning but sometimes it is just not possible. 

What is one piece of advice you would offer to new non-traditional students at UMBC?
Jump in! Talk to everyone. Join things. Find your people! My professors have always appreciated my participation in class, even if it's different than a younger student's may be. When I was looking to get involved on campus, I spoke to one of my teachers, Dr. David Hoffman, who understood my circumstances, but knew my passion too. He helped me find the right group of people to get involved with, which has made me love my time at UMBC even more.

Give yourself the chance to explore research while being paid and see what the future holds for you! 

To get started:
  1. Read about opportunities in your major. Investigate the summer programs linked to your major and pick 15 favorites.
  2. Put these workshops on your calendar  
  3. Use the advice on the same page to start getting to know your professors. You will need letters of recommendation by the end of the semester.
  4. Visit the Career Center or Shriver Center to make sure your resume is the best it can be for this purpose. 
  5. Make sure you are a member of the myUMBC group Undergraduate Research so you receive notices about application deadlines and application support.

The Baltimore Camera Club: 130 Years of Photographic Education and Excellence 

The Baltimore Camera Club -- one of the oldest photographic societies in the United States -- turns 130 years old this year! And what better way to celebrate than to explore the history of this illustrious group at UMBC’s Special Collections? Founded in 1884, the Baltimore Camera Club maintains a dedication to exploring the art and science of photography, offering members the opportunity to learn more about photographic process, participate in outings, and enter their in photography competitions.

If you’re interested in the history of the Baltimore Camera Club, UMBC’s Special Collections is the place to be. Graciously donated by the Club and its members, the Baltimore Camera Club collection is home to a wide variety of photographs, documents and artifacts relating to their lengthy history. Check out the huge collection of trophies and certificates awarded for photographic excellence, or browse the number of documents of the Club’s financial and member history, including handwritten ledger books from the turn of the century. Among the many items in the collection is a series of scrapbook pages featuring meeting announcements, newspaper clippings, and photographs of the club’s founding members, which offers the opportunity to gain a peek into how such a long-lasting club got its start.

Want to learn more about past activities of The Baltimore Camera Club? Have a look at the issues of the Baltimore Camera Club’s publication, Focal Point, dating from the late 1970s into the 1990s.  Or maybe you want to see the types of works that members produced -- well we have that too! The collection contains a number of member-created photographs, including prints by some of the their most famous members, like Edward Bafford and A. Aubrey Bodine, who was also a photographer at the Baltimore Sun for fifty years.

Feel free to grab a seat by the display of antique cameras in our reading room and spend some time exploring the long and interesting history of The Baltimore Camera Club.  Whether you want to bone up on your history before attending a meeting or just want to learn about the oldest photographic society in the nation, UMBC’s Special Collections department has something for you.

Rebuilding Manhood Applications are now available! 


What do you enjoy about being a man? What do you wish was different?
What does it mean to be a man? When and how did you learn to become a man? 

Explore these questions and more through Rebuilding Manhood. In a safe (and brave) space you will discuss gender roles, norms/variations, and build a healthy, multifaceted masculinity with other UMBC undergraduate men. Through the facilitation of UMBC staff members and a peer facilitator, you will discuss topics related to being a man parallel to other important social identities and explore ways you can be an effective ally for yourself, women, and others.

Rebuilding Manhoodis an 11-week commitment. The group will meet once a week on Fridays from 2-3:15pm beginning Friday, September 12, 2014.  Group members are expected to make all meetings and are asked to commit to some outside reading (20-30 minutes a week).


All undergraduate students who identify as men are encouraged to apply.
