    <div class="html-content"><div>Call for Proposals: Janet C. Rutledge Graduate Student Well-Being Award</div><p>The Graduate School invites UMBC faculty and staff to apply for the inaugural Janet C. Rutledge Graduate Student Well-Being Award, which supports innovative, research-informed projects that promote sustainable graduate student well-being.</p><p>One proposal will be selected annually to receive up to $3,500 for programming costs and/or a stipend. Projects may address one or more areas of graduate student well-being, including sense of purpose, financial security, belonging, faculty mentoring, or student-centered academic structures.     <div class="html-content"><h4>Join Us!</h4><p>Come celebrate URCAD's 30th anniversary on April 22, 2026! </p><p>The event will be moving to a bigger space in the RAC… how do you see your work being presented there? </p><p>Posters, oral talks, films, exhibits, and performances are welcome. URCAD is open to all majors and group projects are accepted. You can present your capstone, Honors thesis, REU research, or you can be unaffiliated with a scholars program. </p><p>Applications to present mentored research or creative worker open and will be due by February 16th and require a 200-word abstract and mentor approval.     <div class="html-content"><p>Promotions have begun for the 2026 University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Student Excellence Scholarships, which recognize outstanding undergraduate and graduate students across USM institutions.</p>
    <p>This is a self-nomination scholarship. While the application portal opens on <strong>Tuesday, January 6,</strong> students are encouraged to review the requirements and begin preparing materials in advance.</p>
    <p><strong>Application Deadline: Friday, February 6</strong><br>
    Requirements: Completed application, including a letter of recommendation<br>
    Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate USM students in good academic and disciplinary standing<br>

This year URCAD moves to a new space in the RAC!</p><h5>Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day- 30th Anniversary!</h5><p>Come celebrate 30 years of grit, grunge, and groundbreaking research!</p><p>On Wednesday April 22, 2026, Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) will feature research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work will be shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 400 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor's on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC's commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.</p><p>All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD.     Join us for a conversation with the scholars who created <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/calt/events/149113/45588/aae58656c09217ac87ddf3b0481ddd25/web/link?link=http%3A%2F%2Frefusinggenai.wordpress.com%2F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Refusing Generative AI in Writing Studies</a>. The speakers will share how and why they decided to create Refusing GenAI in Writing Studies
     as well as its impact as a rhetorical intervention. In addition, they 
    will address stock arguments in support of generative AI adoption in the
     classroom before offering some practical teaching strategies for 
    negotiating some of the challenges that generative AI poses for 
    education. Teachers from all disciplines who assign writing, who are 
    interested in learning about diverse perspectives on generative AI in 
    higher education, and who are interested in resisting Big Tech's 
    incursion in higher education may benefit from attending this teaching 
    talk.<br><br>Maggie Fernandes (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of 
    Rhetoric and Composition at the University of Arkansas. Her scholarly 
    expertise is in digital/cultural rhetorics, writing assessment, 
    institutional oppression, and user experience design. Her work has been 
    published in Computers and Composition, Composition Studies, Enculturation, Peitho, Kairos, and Reflections: A Journal of Community-Engaged Writing and Rhetoric. <br><br>Megan
     McIntyre (she/her) is the Director of the Program in Rhetoric and 
    Composition and an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas, 
    where she teaches courses on writing pedagogy, research methods, and 
    digital rhetorics. Her most recent work has appeared in Computers and Composition, Composition Forum, Peitho, and The Journal of Writing Assessment.<br>Jennifer
     Sano-Franchini (she/her) is the Gaziano Family Legacy Professor of 
    Rhetoric and Writing Studies and an associate professor of English at 
    West Virginia University. Her scholarly interests are in the cultural 
    politics of design, Asian American rhetoric, and the rhetorical work of 
    institutions. She serves as the Chair of the Conference on College
