Diwali in North India and Deepavali in South India are both major festivals celebrating the victory of light over darkness with their own distinct regional customs and traditions. In North India, Diwali is primarily linked to the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. This grand celebration includes fireworks, decorating homes with oil lamps (diyas), and worshiping Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity.

In South India, Deepavali is often associated with the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura, symbolizing the victory of truth and righteousness. The celebrations in the South focus on early morning oil baths, temple visits, and lighting lamps. Both festivals share the common themes of joy, family gatherings, and the removal of darkness.

¡Feliz Día de los Muertos! On October 31st, join us in The Mosaic or the Women's Center for a crafty celebration of one of Mexico's most colorful & spiritual holidays. Learn more about the holiday and its history, as well as how it's celebrated in other parts of the world, by stopping by our table in Main Street, across from the main entrance of the bookstore.

Activities will include craft making (including marigolds, papel picado, and calavera doll making), remembering and welcoming loved ones that have passed, music, food, and more! Create things to add to our community ofrenda, or take them home for your own!

This is day 2 of 2 that we will be celebrating Day of the Dead. Traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, we will celebrate on the 30th and 31st to better accommodate staff and students that wish to participate. The Gathering Space is also open on Friday (November 1st) to support students who may want a more solemn space to remember.

¡Feliz Día de los Muertos! On October 30th, join us in Flat Tuesdays for a crafty celebration of one of Mexico's most colorful & spiritual holidays. Learn more about the holiday and its history, as well as how it's celebrated in other parts of the world, by stopping by our table in Main Street, down the stairs from Flat Tuesdays.

Activities will include craft making (including marigolds, papel picado, and calavera doll making), remembering and welcoming loved ones that have passed, music, food, and more! Create things to add to our community ofrenda, or take them home for your own!

This is day 1 of 2 that we will be celebrating Day of the Dead. Traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, we will celebrate on the 30th and 31st to better accommodate staff and students that wish to participate. The Gathering Space is also open on Friday (November 1st) to support students who may want a more solemn space to remember.

Join us for the UMBC screening of By My Side - a short documentary that provides an intimate portrait of three veterans navigating their world with PTSD - an outcome faced by approximately 20% of veterans of the wars of Afghanistan and Iraq.  These veterans and their families bravely share their pain, fear and the experience that they have lost time and love that may never return.  All three found hope - in the heart of a loyal, faithful and well-trained service dog.  Through intimate interviews and revealing footage, the film demonstrates how these dogs help mitigate the trauma and scarring experienced by these veterans.

A brief Q&A and panel discussion will follow the film screening.
