<Title>Engaging with Disability Awareness Month at UMBC</Title>
<Tagline>Disability: Essential to the Equity and Inclusion Equation</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div><strong>National Disability Awareness Month</strong> is  held in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.</div><div><div><div><br></div><div>NDAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion more broadly.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  <a href="https://www.adaanniversary.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">celebrating its 32st anniversary</a>, and <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/posts/130484" rel="nofollow <Title>Engaging with Disability Awareness Month at UMBC</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><strong>National Disability Awareness Month</strong><span> is  held in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.</span><div><br></div><div>NDAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion more broadly.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  <a href="https://www.adaanniversary.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">celebrating its 32st anniversary</a>, and <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/posts/130484" rel="nofollow     <div class="html-content"><h2><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/careers/events?mode=upcoming" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Wednesday, October 9, 2024</a><span> </span><span>· 12 - 1 PM</span></h2><hr><div></div><div><div>Graduate Students: Learn About the Paid Legislative Fellow Program at the Maryland General Assembly (Annapolis, MD)<div><br></div><div>Virtual Information Session begins at 12 pm on  October 9th, 2024.</div><div><br></div><div><div>The Legislative Fellows Program offers top graduate students in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia region an immersive experience in the legislative process working alongside nonpartisan staff within the Department of Legislative Services (DLS), the professional staff agency for the Maryland General Assembly (MGA). Fellows will work during the General Assembly’s annual 90-day legislative session (January – April) and assist legal, fiscal, and committee staff with their regular session duties. Fellows receive a stipend between $5,118 and $8,400.
