PAID Summer Opportunity in Biological Illustration!
California Academy of Scientists: San Francisco
The California Academy of Sciences announces an internship in biological illustration. The internship is open to currently enrolled undergraduate students interested in developing illustration techniques related to biological specimens. The intern will work with one or more Academy scientists to develop illustrations that may be used in scientific publications. The internship is integrated with the activities of the Summer Systematics Institute (SSI), and the successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in all SSI activities with fellow interns, including lectures, seminars, presentations, and social activities.
The California Academy of Sciences is a natural history museum supporting research and collection activities in the disciplines of Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Herpetology, Ichthyology, Invertebrate Zoology, Ornithology, Mammalogy, and Paleobiology.

An Ad for The Rathskeller
Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present an ad in The Retriever for the student lounge and bar The Rathskeller.

The Hillcrest Building, UMBC's first administration building, was a center for student recreational activities including sororities, fraternities, game clubs, and The Rathskeller, also known as "The Ratt," a student lounge/ bar situated in the basement of Hillcrest. The Rathskeller was open for 34 years, providing UMBC students with a place for drinking, dancing, eating, and hanging out outside of classes. It eventually closed in 2000, shortly followed by the demolition of the Hillcrest Building in 2007 to make way for new parking spaces and residential halls.

Seattle University Mathematics Early Research Program
The department of mathematics at Seattle University is looking for undergraduate students, particularly rising sophomores, juniors, and community college students for a paid summer research program. They are seeking students who are interested in working on enumerative combinatorics or knot theory (look these up, they are great subjects, you may be interested once you learn about them). Selected students will engage in original research and attend talks hosted by mathematicians while living in the heart of Seattle.
Requirements:
- Citizens or permanent residents of the United States
- Full-time undergraduate students
- A course in linear algebra is encouraged (but not required)
- First-generation college students, minority students, and women are encouraged to apply

PAID Interdisciplinary Research Opportunity in ETHIOPIA
Summer 2016: travel to Ethiopia and conduct field research
Colby College in Waterville, Maine is offering 8 undergraduate students a chance to conduct ground-breaking interdisciplinary research on ecological, economic and cultural roles of church forests in Amhara, Ethiopia.
Students will receive training at Colby College in social survey and ecological methods, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and written and oral communication skills. After that, students will travel to Ethiopia to conduct fieldwork with faculty mentors from Colby College.
Benefits:
- Stipend of $4000
- housing costs
- round-trip travel expenses
