Multiple Research Opportunities at Nebraska-Lincoln Uni!
Check out the many summer programs available
The Summer Research Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers NSF funded programs in many different fields. The programs runs 10 weeks from June 5, 2016 (Arrival day) - August 11, 2016 (Departure day).
The priority deadline for all of these programs is February 1, 2016
The regular deadline is March 1, 2016
Here are links to the available programs with more detailed information about each program, such as available mentors for each program, eligibility, how to apply, etc. (The deadlines are all the same)
If you have an interest in any of the programs, or an interest in research at graduate school, don't hesitate to apply as the priority deadline is creeping up!
Dialogue, Volume 1, Number 1, Winter 1967. UPUB E3- 016. University Publications, University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)
UMBC's first literary magazine, Dialogue, was created in 1967 and lasted for only two short years. Early issues of the magazine contained short poems and stories. However, a poem included and written by editor of Dialogue, Glenn Blanchard, in the second edition of the magazine stirred up controversy at UMBC. His poem alluded to racial tensions and used explicit language, upsetting many members of the UMBC community. Chancellor Albin O. Kuhn defended the journal and students' right to free speech, but after a controversy ensued once again (over the display of nude photographs within the Fall 1968 edition of Dialogue), the magazine fell apart and was ordered by Kuhn to officially stop its production.

Complexity Across Disciplines (CAD)
Summer Research Opp at Boise State Uni- Department of Math
The program is a nine week summer program in which undergraduate students experience independent research in combinatorics, number theory, algebra, and game theory. Sounds interesting? There's more!
Benefits will include:
- Receive a stipend of $4000
- Free on campus housing and an allowance for meals.
- Receive three undergraduate college credits from Boise State University.
- Attend guest lectures by mathematicians and scientists.
- Participate in scientific seminars addressing mathematical techniques used in information security and genome remodelling.
- Participate in professional development workshops addressing research presentation skills, scientific writing and ethics.
- Be part of the summer community of collaborators, students and faculty, from all STEM disciplines and programs on campus.
- Experience mentoring high school fellows of the NASA-based Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars Program.
- Opportunities to present summer research results at the 2017 Joint Mathematics Meetings.
- Opportunity to present at the 2016 Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research (ICUR).
- Enjoy the various cultural and social activities in and around Boise.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must not yet have graduated with an undergraduate degree.
- Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States and its possessions are eligible for fellowships from the National Science Foundation. We welcome foreign undergraduates attending a US educational institution and who have funding from other sources to also apply to our program.
This program is designed for students majoring in marine science, ecology, environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, and mathematics.
During the 12-week program, each student works with a mentor on an individual research project at one of the two marine labs at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences located on the Chesapeake Bay:

- Benthic environment
- Climate change
- Physical oceanography
- Contaminants
- Fisheries
- Molecular biology and genetics
- Environmental chemistry
- Submerged aquatic vegetation
- Modelling and analysis
BENEFITS INCLUDE:

- Round-trip travel expenses
ELIGIBILITY:
- U.S. Citizens or permanent residents
- Completed at least two years of study towards a bachelors' degree

Working with LGBTQ Students on Campus:
LGBTQ students face many challenges transitioning to college life. They are at a higher risk of discrimination as well as psychological distress, including suicidal ideation, than their heterosexual peers. They may feel less willing to participate in classroom discussions, especially if no one is willing to speak out against any harassment or bias. The first step towards developing a safe and inclusive environment is the education of the staff and faculty that they will be looking up to for the next few years of their lives.This online simulation helps build a community of respect, inclusion, and support for LGBTQ students. In this 30-minute interactive role-play course, you will learn how to address discriminatory language, talk to a student who chooses to discuss their LGBTQ identity, identify when a student may be distressed, and refer them to supportWorking with Veterans:
Our college community is becoming increasingly aware of the unique challenges facing student veterans in their difficult transition to civilian life. While the VA has developed some preventative measures over the last several years, we have still seen an increase in suicide and at-risk behavior among veterans.To address this concern, this an online training simulation will help all of us to better support our student veterans. In this 30-minute course, you will learn about common transitional stressors that a student veteran may experience, what resources are available on-campus for student veterans, and how to help a student veteran who’s struggling.Working with general students in distress or at-risk:
Our college community is becoming increasingly aware of the amount of stress our students are experiencing and the negative impact it can have on their health and academic performance. Studies have shown a 20% increase in college stress over the last 5 years, with 44% of students experiencing periods of severe distress.
This online training will help faculty and staff to better identify, support, and refer these students to support services on campus. Through these courses, you will learn how to identify signs of psychological distress and refer students to support services through practiced interaction with virtual students.
For Students:
Supporting LGBTQ Students on Campus:
An online conversation game that will assist you in learning about the challenges faced by LGBTQ students. Through practiced conversations with virtual students, you will learn how to create a safe and supportive space for all students and identify what support services are available on your campus.Supporting peers who are Veterans:
A unique, game-based, online training, lets you interact with virtual student veterans to learn tactics for identifying signs of distress in your peers, reaching out to fellow vets you are worried about, and referring friends to available support services.Helping fellow students who are in distress
A game-based simulation where you will learn how to recognize the signs of distress, approach a friend you're worried about, and determine where you and your friend can turn for help.
