The basis of this Summer Intern Program is a highly individualised research experience for each student coupled with group activities. As an intern in the VIMS (Virginia Institute of Marine Science) program, students work closely with a mentor, and often within the context of a research team, to develop an individual project. 

Students are expected to work with their mentors to develop a project idea in the form of a brief research prospectus, conduct their research, and then present results in a final program that is open to the VIMS community.

Students will also prepare a summary research paper that is maintained in the program archives. In some cases, this has been the basis for a subsequent publication in the scientific literature.

The program will allow give the students an opportunity every week to attend a seminar that features a guest speaker discussing topics such as:

• "Scientific Reading, Writing and Peer Review"
• "How to Apply to Graduate School: Tips from the Faculty Who Read the Files"
• "Alternatives to Life in Academia: A Panel Discussion"
• "How to Give an Effective Scientific Presentation"
• "Ethics in Science"

Inspired by the multitude of activism taking place at UMBC over the fall semester, the Women’s Center is excited to offer a new skills-based workshop to the community. “Get It Together!”: Fundamentals of Activism will focus specifically on social justice activism. During the course of an hour, we’ll explore some of the many possibilities for engaging in activism, discuss practical options for taking action on campus, and gain new insights for creating change.

• Wednesday, February 3rd from 4-5pm in the Women’s Center
• Wednesday, Feburary 10th from 12-1pm in the Women’s Center

The 10-week summer program introduces students to the nature of research-oriented careers in physics & astronomy, and fosters development of research-related skills and knowledge. Students are matched with faculty mentors based on interests. Students will engage in weekly seminars, field trips and workshops that will provide additional skills development, professional development topics such as ethics and patents/intellectual property, and an introduction to common research resources.

ELIGIBILITY

• You must be an undergraduate student in any academic year (freshman through senior) at the time of the summer program.
• You don't need to have a declared major, but you must have already completed the introductory physics sequence at your school.
• Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

• A Self-statement, up to 1 page in length:
  The 1-page Self-statement should describe your academic background, your interests, and your tentative career plans. The Statement should indicate why you feel REU participation would benefit you and your future plans; also, describe how you believe you can contribute to your mentor’s research topic. If applicable, you are welcome to describe prior undergraduate research experience, as well as any other information that you feel may be useful to our assessment. Finally, please indicate if you have a preferred mentor or topic area. (Note, however, that final mentor assignment occurs after selection of participants.)
• Your current college transcript(s):
  A scanned copy of an official transcript is acceptable; please scan with at least 200 dpi resolution and format as a PDF file. If your school provides you with online access to your transcript or degree audit, a PDF printout of this may also be acceptable. In either case, the electronic copy of your transcript must be directly traceable to your school registrar. A handwritten list of courses, or a copied transcript modified by hand/typewriter/computer, will not be accepted.

Nine to twelve positions are available for this 8-week summer program for students who are interested in conducting research under the guidance of faculty from Computer Science and Aerospace Engineering department at Auburn University. Research assistants will collaborate with advisers to contribute to unmanned flight! Students will also help to autonomously fly six to twelve UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) in a limited air space to fulfill different kinds of missions.
