Getting involved in research helps you network with faculty both on and off campus, strengthen your resume for graduate school, professional school, and employment, support your artistic vision, and helps you apply what they’ve learned in the classroom in a research setting. UMBC has several programs that support undergraduate research:

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film.

Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply.

UMBC Review (Journal of Undergraduate Research) Published annually, this peer-reviewed journal features academic papers written by UMBC undergraduates.

Travel Awards Students who are invited to present their work at a conference or festival may apply for funds to support their travel.

Research Opportunities Assistance with finding and applying to summer REUs and other research opportunities.

Prestigious Scholarships Support for students applying for prestigious scholarships such as Rhodes, Gates-Cambridge, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and others.

Title of your research project: Nest Site Characteristics of the Bahama Oriole: Habitat Requirements of a Critically Endangered Species

What has been the most rewarding part? The most rewarding part is the outreach and effect on the community in the Bahamas this project has had. Every year we run into people who have our cards or have heard of us and want to help. They end up showing us nests or giving us valuable information about the birds and they always like to learn more about the project and how we are doing. 

Please note that our hours will be modified for Welcome Week (August 25- September 7). Our summer hours will end on Tuesday, August 28, 2018.

The Mosaic lounge space will to be available to students, staff, faculty and their visitors on a "first come, first seated" basis.  Free coffee, tea, cold beverages and periodic snacks will be available during this time. We're trying to be more sustainable!  Please bring your own travel mug or cup with you. Our Interfaith Center will continue to serve as a meeting place for prayer or to socialize and our Queer Student Lounge will remain closed. Our spaces are NON-RESERVABLE over finals week and summer session hours.

Disability as Diversity on the Job, Engineering 023, noon to 1 pm

Learn more about what disability, the interactive process, and accommodation are about, as well as challenges that affect the connection with campus resources in this dynamic session.  This training provides faculty and staff with information to understand disability and inclusion, along with basic and intermediate skills for navigating the accommodation request and referral process. The training will also identify campus processes and services that support faculty, staff, students and visitors with disabilities.

CSJ: Women in Engineering and Igniting Change (A CWIT Impact Series event) ITE 456, 12 -1pm

In this session, Professor Gurganus will spend time engaging you on the reason you’re pursuing your degree in STEM and the power of belief. Trusting in yourself and the bigger purpose will let you conquer any obstacle and move any mountain.

Kuhn Library & Gallery is pleased to announce the implementation of ScholarWorks@UMBC, a system for collecting UMBC research and creative work outputs in one place to showcase what UMBC does. Academic departments and faculty have their own pages displaying a list of all full-text works included. Faculty sponsored student work exemplifying teaching and learning can also be included. Depositing research in ScholarWorks@UMBC extends dissemination of your work more widely than high-priced journals, making it available for free worldwide, increasing impact and potential citations. All content included in ScholarWorks@UMBC is issued a permanent URL and indexed by Google Scholar. ScholarWorks@UMBC will soon also include automated social media mentions to help promote your work. ScholarWorks@UMBC is part of the Maryland Share Open Access Repository (MDSOAR), a system shared by 13 Maryland colleges and universities.

And now… Women’s Center Scouts!

Time and time again, Women’s Center staff get the question, “How do you join the Women’s Center?”

Our response is “Easy! Come and hang out in our lounge! Come to events. You don’t have to join.”

To which we get an “Oh. Okay.”

We get it. Being a part of something is special. Showing your loyalty and commitment to a cause is empowering. Finding home and belonging in a space that means something to you, means something to us.

So, now, you can “join” the Women’s Center by being one of our fearless and loyal Scouts!

Here’s the deal. To become a Women’s Center Scout, first start by joining the Women’s Center myUMBC page and following at least one of our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram). If you’re already a member and following one of our pages, great! You’re one step closer.

Next, it’s time to save the dates! Each Scout must meet the challenge of attending at least 3 different Women’s Center events throughout the fall semester. The 3 different events must meet the following criteria:

• 1 Discussion-Based event
  This includes Knowledge Exchanges, Pop-Culture Pop-Ups, and any identity-based discussion groups
• 1 Skill-Based workshop/event
  This includes workshops like Supporting Survivors of Sexual Violence, Women + Leadership events hosted by the Women’s Center, or events like Trans and College
• 1 Critical Social Justice: Ignite event
  So many events throughout the week of October 22-26th! Visit the CSJ website for details.

From the above challenges, your duty as a Women’s Center Scout is to ensure that you attend 1 event during first 8 weeks of the semester and attend 1 event during second 8 weeks of semester. This will require planning and strategy, Scouts!

Okay…. you don’t need to keep swiping, but do keep reading! 

Over the course of the semester, we may also announce bonus Scout challenges to enhance the experience so do stay tuned to our social media pages!

Any UMBC community member who completes the challenge by December 1st gets a Women’s Center T-shirt and a shout-out on our social media pages (any maybe some badges – we’re still working on those details).
