PolicyMap now available to UMBC Mapmaking and data analysis in one package UMBC now has a subscription to PolicyMap, a GIS tool that allows users to create maps, tables, and reports from a variety of datasets ranging from demographics, income, health, education, more. Maps can be created as single sheets or with multiple layers from the zip code / block level to worldwide.

Users can create individual accounts to save, share, and print work. A suite of tutorials is available to help both new and experienced users work with the tool effectively.

December 3rd is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, honoring the United Nation's commitment for promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day raises awareness of the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of disability that affects people around the world.

More than 1 billion people in the world have a disability. At fifteen percent (15%) of the world’s population, persons with disabilities account for the world’s largest minority. Furthermore, one out of every seven people is affected by disability.

We have added information on two Baltimore photographers within the collection, Cary Beth Cryor and Irving Henry Webster Phillips Sr. Other changes included the addition of more articles, books on specific photographers, and books on compilations of photographers. There are plenty of examples of research sources and a lot more to find in the included databases, outside resources, and the article searches.

The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with backgrounds in the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—into teaching in high-need secondary schools in Pennsylvania. The Fellowship has also prepared over a thousand teachers in Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, and Ohio. Eligible applicants include current undergraduates, recent college graduates, midcareer professionals, and retirees who have majored in, or have extensively studied, one or more of the STEM fields.

The Fellowship also works to change the way top teachers are prepared, partnering with colleges and universities that have agreed to provide Fellows with innovative, year-long classroom experiences, rigorous academic work, and ongoing mentoring.

December 1 is World AIDS Day, a day to unite in the fight to end the HIV epidemic, support people living with HIV and honor those who have lost their life.

This year, the focus is on global commitment to deliver quality, people-centered HIV prevention and treatment services that create and sustain impact.  We must strengthen the capacity and resilience of communities and health systems to address HIV prevention services in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The US Department of Health and Human Services and its partners remain committed to accelerating efforts to end the HIV Epidemic

For the end of the semester, AOK Library has put together a Finals Challenge! 

From now through December 15, do five of the activities listed below and take a picture--either while you complete it or of your finished product. Post the photos on social media and tag the library (on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram). You can post all of them together or separately--just make sure they’re posted by the end of the day on December 15th and that we’re tagged in all of them. 

If you do more than five activities, you’ll get an extra entry in the prize drawing for a gift from the bookstore! Winners will be announced December 16. 

Challenge activities:
  • Take part in a RAC streaming wellness class
  • Attend a virtual performance or exhibit (some UMBC options: music and Arts at UMBC) 
  • Organize your study space or organize your class materials
  • Make a finals study plan- how do you plan to organize your study time? Don’t forget to include short breaks :) 
  • Share a study tip for fellow Retrievers 
  • Do a coloring page--if you don’t have one, try our Special Collections coloring book
  • Share a photo of your favorite UMBC spot
  • Take a nature break
  • Make a list of things you’re thankful for this year
  • Review your class notes one module at a time and write a brief summary of each
  • Create some study flashcards and quiz yourself 
  • Clear your head and go on a walk

Award promotes diversity in birding Omland Lab sophomore, Meyerhoff Scholar and Biology / Music double major D’Juan Moreland (M31) was just announced as a winner of a new scholarship to promote diversity in birding, environmental science and related fields.  In addition to being an excellent student, D'Juan is a mentor to school children who are interested in birds and birding.

D'Juan's mentor, Dr. Kevin Omland observes, "I am proud of what he has accomplished so far, and this scholarship is such a good small step to helping to diversify those interested in outdoor recreation and conservation."

The Black and Latinx Birders Scholarship is open to DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and Delaware students of any age, in any year of their college studies (full-time undergraduate). Through the Annual Scholarship for Black and Latinx Birders of the DMV and DE, it seeks to increase the number of Black birders and Latinx birders studying in the fields of environmental science or the biological sciences. This year they awarded two $5,000 scholarships.

Hello everyone!

First of all, we hope you all had a wonderful and safe holiday. Secondly, Retriever Essentials currently has a lot of things going on, and we wanted to share with you!


As you may know, Giving Day is tomorrow, December 1st. Because of our Home for the Holidays Food Drive being such a success, we are low on a lot on a lot of items, including the following:

  • Toiletries (soap, toothpaste, and deodorant)

  • Soups (especially vegan and vegetarian soups)

  • Baby items (formula, diapers, baby food, soap, and lotion)

  • Feminine health products

  • Condoms
