<Title>2021-2022 MHEC Teaching Fellows MD Scholarship App Now Open!</Title>

    <span>The Teaching Fellows for Maryland Scholarship is awarded to students who pledge to work as public school or public prekindergarten teachers in Maryland upon completion of their studies at schools that have at least 50% of the students in the school eligible for free or reduced price meals (FRPM). See the Service Obligation Requirement section below for more information. </span><div><span><br></span></div>

    <p><strong><span>Service Obligation Requirement</span></strong></p>
    <p><span>A recipient must sign and return a promissory note agreeing to begin fulfillment of the service obligation as follows:  </span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><span>A recipient of the Teaching Fellows scholarship must teach in a public school or public prekindergarten program that has at least 50% of its students eligible for FRPM for the periods specified below:</span></li>
    <ul>
    <li>
    <span>​</span><span>For a recipient who receives a scholarship as an undergraduate student, the service obligation is 1 year for each year that the recipient receives a scholarship.</span>
    </li>
    <li><span>For a student who receives a scholarship as a graduate student, the service obligation is 2 years for each year that the recipient receives a scholarship.</span></li>
    </ul>
    </ul>

    <p><strong><span>​​​</span></strong><strong><span>Scholarship Award Amount</span></strong></p>
    <p><span>A recipient is eligible to receive an award amount as follows:</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><span>At a Maryland <strong>public senior higher education institution</strong>, the scholarship award is equivalent to 100% of the annual tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board of a resident undergraduate student or graduate student, as appropriate.</span></li>
    <li><span>At a Maryland <strong>private nonprofit institution</strong>, the scholarship award is equal to the lesser of:</span></li>
    <ul>
    <li><span>100% of the annual tuition and mandatory fees of a resident undergraduate student or graduate student, as appropriate, at the University of Maryland College Park (UMPC) and 100% of the room and board of a resident undergraduate student or graduate student, as appropriate, at the institution; or</span></li>
    <li><span>50% of the annual tuition and mandatory fees of a resident undergraduate or graduate student, as appropriate, at the institution and 100% of the room and board of a resident undergraduate student or graduate student, as appropriate, at the institution.</span></li>
    </ul>
    <li><span>A private nonprofit institution must provide a matching scholarship award in an amount equal to the State award provided for tuition &amp; fees only.  Private nonprofit institutions are not required to match State funds awarded for room and board.</span></li>

    <div>Over the next 36 hours the UMBC community is coming together for our annual <a href="http://givingday.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Giving Day</a>. This is a community-wide effort where we contribute to initiatives, departments, programs and so much more to support the amazing things happening on our campus.</div>

    <a href="https://i3b.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion &amp; Belonging (i3b)</a> is a new department on campus, but is composed of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice work that has been happening on UMBC’s campus for over 20 years. i3b helps students, staff, faculty &amp; alumni develop the knowledge, awareness and skills necessary to cultivate an inclusive campus community, while creating spaces for students to get connected and find belonging. You may be most familiar with our three cultural centers – The Mosaic, Interfaith and Pride Centers, where students are able to find a home away from home as connected to these important identities. <Title>Black Power in DC (2/25)</Title>
<Tagline>Join UMBC Associate Professor of History George Musgrove</Tagline>

    <p>On February 25th, at 12:00pm-1:00pm, <a href="https://history.umbc.edu/facultystaff/full-time/derek-musgrove/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">George Derek Musgrove</a>, associate professor of history, will present and discuss the conception and design of <span><a href="https://blackpowerindc.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Black Power in DC</a></span>, an innovative and interactive approach to presenting history. He will be joined by <a href="https://history.umbc.edu/facultystaff/full-time/anne-sarah-rubin/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Anne Sarah Rubin</a>, professor of history, and <a href="https://www.irc.umbc.edu/people/lee-boot" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Lee Boot</a>, director of the Imaging Research Center, to discuss the project’s creation and its relationship to the digital humanities landscape. A question and answer session with the audience will follow.</p>
    <p>Musgrove launched Black Power in DC, an online ”StoryMap” created in collaboration with the Imaging Research Center (IRC), in February 2021. His goal was to represent the evolution of this influential social movement over space and time through interactive geographic maps, historical photographs and text. The project builds from his book, <em>Chocolate City: A History of Race and Democracy in the Nation’s Capital</em>, co-authored with Chris Myers Asch and published in 2017.
